Ole Gunnar Solskjær | Beşiktaş J.K.

Why do people always forget the league finish was 6th under mourinho and that the europa league win kind of papered over the cracks? For all the money spent, that's not good enough in hindsight. Should have been comfortably top 4 that season.

Nar, what people like you clearly forget is that we actually drew an insane amount of games that season where we absolutely battered teams. So many drawn games where we were left scratching our heads as to how we didn’t take home 3 points.

We actually had the least amount of league defeats (5) that season of any post SAF season.

We didn’t ”paper over the cracks” with our Europa league win, if anything we showed we were ready for a second place finish the following year with a good points haul (it ended up being the only post SAF season with 80+). We were extremely hard to beat and we’d taken home two trophies.
Had Zlatan not gotten injured and we’d been able to spend to Lukaku money elsewhere, who knows what would have happened but I expect we’d have been even better considering Lukaku was a downgrade on Zlatan and we didn’t get an extra top £75m player.

Doesn't matter, we drew an insane amount of games under LVG and it still wasn't good enough.

Exactly. Especially during the fall of 2016 - the amount of absurd opposition GK performances against United were surreal. Zlatan also missed a ton of chances if I recall.

Yes it matters as our xG stats with LvG were fecking shite, we were utterly toothless. With Mourinho that first season we battered a tonne of teams as @SirAF mentions above, with multiple GK’s having the game of their lives.
We lost just 5, won two trophies and xG said we were extremely unlucky in the league.

That isn’t ”papering” over the cracks, what we saw that following season was what we could’ve expected, an 80+ point season, something only one fuxking manager has managed to produce post SAF (and this despite losing his most influential player to injury and this changing his Summer transfer plans).

Did Jose a big favour today beating Gala. Wonder if Fenerbache might win the title now?

I really like Jose so I hope so.

First league loss of the season for Galatasaray. Ole is a deity for a night in Turkey

Galatasaray have to go to Samsunspor (who are 3rd) next game so if they drop points (and obviously Fenerbahce win the game in hand) it could get really interesting. On the other hand, Fenerbahce will host Besiktas in May so Ole could kill Jose's title hopes as well

Jose hasn't won a league title in a decade so surely would mean much to him to do it at Fenerbahce, either this or next season. Fenerbahce without a title since 2014 as well.

Besiktas struggling in the quarter finals of the Turkish cup. After taking the lead, after a lovely counter attack goal, one of the Besiktas CBs stupidly gets sent off for pulling a player down as the last man and Goztepe scored from the FK. HT very soon.

And just as I post this, Besiktas get a pen or maybe outside the box, hard to tell haha.

Looks like the wheels have fell off for ole again. He knows how to get of to flying starts though.

They are still in the European spots and 3 places higher than when he took over, the issues recently have been more down to this spate of red cards undercutting the team but the win against Galatasary will have bought him a ton of credit and an away draw against a top 10 side today when down to 10 men is not too bad. He should be safe enough to get a summer rebuild and see if he can't sustain the improvement in the longer term, needs to bin off Sanuc though as he is clearly not a reliable character.

That win against Gala came when they were man up for more than 50 mins, so if you are using the other results as an excuse that should be mentioned too.

Besiktas presidents aren’t patient people. Last season they finished 6th and fired not one but three managers in the course of the same season.

In the last 4 seasons ever since they were champions in 20/21 they had 10 managers and 3 interims in 4 seasons. So no, if he doesn’t finish 3rd which is the minimal requirement EL football, imo he won’t get the next year.

Well only 3 points off 3rd now so he has still made a lot of progress, I guess we will see come the end of the season but as of right now it is more positive than not and has certainly done nothing to harm his credentials if he does end up looking for another job.

Yeah, he credentials so far hasn’t took a hit to what he started with, although I just saw that the draw today wasn’t down to 10 men as the guy got sent off from the bench (already subbed off) so they played 11v11 throughout the game.

Besiktas fans and management is notorious for being fickle though so the comfort he got at United and riding it with all the patience he won’t get there. The fans are from Istanbul wealthiest neighbourhood and they are spoiled to only care about success whilst being pretty vocal as well. They also fired Yalcin after winning them the double but after a string of bad results he lasted till December next year and Gio who probably has better resume than Ole in just dozens of games when they dropped to sixth in the league.

On top of that they also swap presidents often they had 3 this season alone. So yeah it’s pretty hostile surrounding for any manager.

Since I already posted it elsewhere...

I remember Mourinho being criticized for his style of play way before he self-imploded in his last season because he didn't get the players he wanted. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Mourinho won it, Solskjaer did not. And please let's not pretend that these two belong to the same conversation. José might have been past it at the time but still was a hundred times the manager Ole will ever dream to be, with the pedigree and trophy cabinet to back it up.

Very true, Man United have been astonishingly mismanaged since SAF left, although the latter had a part in starting the rot by recommending Moyes.

I think that the damage caused by Solksjaer's tenure has way more to do than recency bias. The wheels truly fell off and standards went out the window while Ole was the manager. You went from an underperforming juggernaut to a complete banter club in the league.

Ten Hag was the "coup de grâce" and I personally believe that he was the most nefarious manager of the post-SAF era. An absolute fraud with zero eye for talent who ruined your squad. The damage he caused will take years to rectify. That so many fans wanted to keep him after the FA Cup win is beyond me.

I don't think Mourinho was criticized much during his first season, which is when he won the Europa League. I actually thought our football was decent during that year, and that our finishing was lacking. He was certainly showed patience.

Ultimatey, during the tenures of Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer and Ten Haag we went and spent loads on rebuilding the squad in their image. They all caused damage. His wasn't particularly better or worse than the others.

For me, the 2 Dutch coaches were the worst. Both painfully stubborn in their ways.

United fans: “We’re so sick of watching brilliant goalkeeping display.”
Andre Onana: “Guys, I can fix this.”

I had a feeling Bruno and Maguire were certainties to be 2 out of the 3 people who had stayed in touch with Ole.

Them 2 sound right. Surprised the other ones Lindelof. I’d of thought Rashford would have. Martial also had a really good season under Ole, I know he’s not at our club anymore.
