The quote that I thought would get attention is him saying its not a must win game. Ole really change his tone from when he first came

We attacked too fast against Villa. Sick to death about hearing DNA DNA DNA, how about we just live in the modern era

He really doesn't help himself does he? Carry on liking the two of them. It's sticking by favourites that are not performing that will end up getting him the sack.

If that was TOO fast, I don't want to know what slow paced is for him.
I mean he’s right isn’t he? When we broke out we kept going for the long ball over and over again (especially in the second half) and because of that we couldn’t have that sustained attack that we might have needed. We needed to have some more of the ball and a little more control, he’s spot on.

Yes but a lot is also on him for putting square pegs in round holes. If he wanted more controlled possession in our build-up and balance in the team, he wouldn't put a CM out on the right flank, he wouldn't throw a striker on and go direct with balls in the box, and so on.

I'm glad he has reflected on it at least. I don't have an issue with his evaluation on hindsight.

He is right. We had 28 goal attempts. Most of which were rushed and the wrong decision where a simple pass inside would have set up a much clearer chance.

Our forward line is new again and the cohesion just isn't there yet but it will come.

We used to mock Moyes for quotes like those. “Energy and desire” - that’s the last thing I’d infer from McTominay and Fred’s performance.

Maybe we should play long balls over the top like Everton then, perhaps?

Yeah for sure it’s on him, but I am glad he recognised it.

What? He’s just saying we were rushing our attacks too much.

Completely agree.

Funny the ones slating the manger's public comments about his players have probably never managed a group of people in their life. I'm not even convinced he is going to be the one to lead us to trophies but let's use some common sense.

I'm pretty sure that to paraphrase the mighty Phil Jones, most of them are Flat Pepsi-ers

I actually agree with that. Normally we're pretty good on transitions but we were trying to rush things a bit too much and giving the ball away. Some times, that Bruno --> Greenwood high risk high reward ball isn't necessary, just take the pressure off and circulate it.

You want "verticality" and forwards movement instead of going sideways LVG style but not when you keep giving the ball away cheaply and inviting attacks. Some times just holding on to the ball and having a lengthy spell of possession is good too.

Obviously people are up in arms without understanding the context.

Talks a lot of shit sometimes doesn’t he? That “Mcfred” quote does him no favors.

I actually cringe every time I hear this DNA bs from him.

But in the PL, the margins are so small.
Both City and Chelsea have the same financial capabilites as you have, and have been using them to the fullest. Liverpool and Arsenal are not far behind. The teams are all stacked with quality. And apart from Arsenal, they're all managed exceptionally well at the moment.
And then, it's very hard to improve to the point where you can actually beat out those competitors, and finally beat out Pep's City to a title: it took all of the "mentality monster"-dom that Klopp could get his team to muster up, to do it for one single season. And there just isn't a tree where Klopps or Guardiolas grow, there really is just the two of them.

Even last season's CL exit, yes it was poor as it hinged on a horrible, inexcusable loss to that weak Istanbul side, but then again it was a bit of a tricky group, and if that exit had been down to two losses against PSG, for example, it wouldn't have seemed to poor.
This season, of course, a group stage exit would be laughably bad, considering that you're facing more of an Europa League group in terms of opponents, and would surely be grounds for a sacking - but then, all that happened so far is one surprise loss, there are still 5 games to play and we can't seriously be talking like you are about to go out of the group, can we? You should cross that bridge if you ever get there, which I absolutely doubt you will.

I think we won't get out of the CL group. We shall see. Hopefully I am wrong.

As for the stuff about it being hard, well of course it is hard being the best. In any case I am not looking for the title, I am looking for performances and competing with them. Whether we win or not.

Geez I’m an Ole skeptic but going after him for defending his players in the press conference is too much. He’s doing his job as a man manager there.

His response to Neville - at least he knows we rush our attacks, but remains to be seen what he does about it.

I'm pretty sure you will. You do have the quality, you're a much better team than all three others.

If you don't, Solksjaer has to go, that would be easy.

The other situation, the fine margins, knowing when you can improve by a managerial change and when not, that's not easy at all. Not sure what position I would take as a Man United fan.

I'm assuming by "too fast" he's talking more about how we rushed our shots at times. Because we did have a lot of shots, and not all of them in particularly good positions. I'm guessing that's what he's talking about there.

I have no issues even if he said McFred are the best defensive midfield players in the World. It is not what he says is the main issue. It is what happens on the pitch. Micah did a good article. He has to win something this season or he is gone. He may even go before that if we stumble out of the CL and start dropping positions in the PL.
But whom do you bring? Conte may be instant boost but his teams do not play good football. Maybe Marco Rose? All top managers are already taken.

This guy is talking about how well we broke up play against Villa at home & they’ll be people on this forum defending the man. Embarrassing.

What's most important is the points, and hard to complain about 13 of 18. But the trend of us not controlling the games as much as the other Top 4 contenders is worrying to me. Here is a table showing the teams that have spent most time in the lead so far this season.
TeamsMinutes leadingMPG leading
Chelsea27746,2
Liverpool27746,2
Man City23138,5
Everton18230,3
Burnley17328,8
Tottenham16427,3
Arsenal16227
Brighton14724,5
Brentford14023,3
Watford12520,8
West Ham11719,5
Man United10617,7
The other 3 top 4 teams are in the lead the most and have created a separation to the rest of the league already, even though they have played each other. We on the other hand are down in 12th place in this stat even though we've had an easy run of games at the start. We've faced 0 teams in the top 10 of this list while Liverpool have faced 3, City 3 and Chelsea 4 teams in the top 10 of the minutes leading list.

Points are what matters the most, but things like this makes me think that we need to step up a notch or two to become one of the best teams like we should be. How are we supposed to battle on all fronts if we need our best players playing every minute of every game because we are rarely in the lead?

Last season we also ended in 12th place in this stat so you can get results while playing like this, but for how long? And is it enough to win?

He always plays them when fit, that is exactly how he feels about them.

Yes, and that´s where Ole has to take action and provide some guidance especially to Greenwood. I know Ole tells his strikers to be a bit selfish and try to score, but with Greenwood it´s about finding the right balance.

McTominay went missing in the last game, and while I don´t rate Fred very highly in general, I think the stick he got after the last match is a bit unfair. The players have different tasks and it´s not up to him to create chances or to be the creative one. His job is to press and regain possession, which he did quite well.

Bringing the Cardiff City mentality to Manchester United...
I’m at the point where I honestly feel we deserve what we’re getting. I was sceptical some time ago but these constant sound bites as if we’re done plucky upstart accompanied with the crap we see in Europe is getting ridiculous.

After 3 years his fanatics are still spouting how he ‘righted the ship’, something multiple managers have done in less time whilst winning something. He’s been ordinary.

I agree with the overall point, what is worrying is that we persist with starting 2 CMs who struggle to create chances.

I love how this forum has the ability to turn everything Ole says into the worst possible meaning

He was answering a question about McFred. Why not mention the part where he talks about how he has an obligation to win trophies etc?

It’s just a freaking press conference man this forum is strange at times.

Literally, he gets so much rubbish about throwaway comments.. He deserves criticism for a lot but it gets a little silly.

We attack too fast.

NOBODY in this forum knows what that even means. Wanna know why? because the man who said it doesnt know either. How can you attack too fast? And dont give me that shit about long balls and no transition. Gimme a break, he did not ever mean that.

He knows the language extremely well. Never seen him make a mistake. He did not mean that we rush.

I see there's a lot of discussion going on regarding the midfield issues and the style of football under Solskjaer. Reading through our manager's quotes today, how he values McFred's abilities to break up play and to cover lots of ground and how he prefers a clearly direct style, it got me thinking.

So, i would like to ask a question: Let's presume that Solskjaer is here to stay. Let's also presume that, a year from now, both Ronaldo & Cavani are gone and in their place is Erling Haaland. We have also addressed the midfield by adding Declan Rice and Kalvin Philips to the already existing McTominay and Fred, but Pogba has bid farewell. The 4231 remains. The route-one football, the overall tactical approach off and on the ball is what we're witnessing today remain too.

Let's also presume that Klopp and Pep have stayed at their respective clubs. How would you feel about our chances to win the title? Would you be content with this nod to the days of yore, or would it be a matter of concern that a small fortune will have been spent to form a midfield and an attacking line that's suited specifically to one type of football? My second question is: Does the stabilization of the club after a tumultuous period and the progress in small increments warrant the absolute trust in an unproven (at the highest level) manager to go completely against the grain of modern football tactics?

Please, no "anyone but Solskjaer would win the PL" or "i'd rather live the dream than do what other clubs are doing" answers. Solskjaer talks a lot about the Ferguson days and United's DNA. The truth is that SAF, throughout the 90s and for the most of the 00s, did go against the grain. In an age when football tactics were becoming more defensive, he valued a game of many possessions, and he always tried to give his flair players the opportunity to fully express themselves on the pitch. This is probably what Solskjaer adheres to. But Ferguson was in a league of his own. Unlike what we've been witnessing thus far from Solkjaer, he wasn't chopping and changing systems and personnel just to survive. For many years, and despite what many believe, he also was ahead of the curve as a tactician on the island(even before he came to OT): He broke the traditional "hard men" centre-halves pairing by introducing a sweeper-like defender next to the stopper. He also moved away from the British midfield duo of one-all-attacking/one-all-defending to two dynamic who could both defend, attack and take care of the ball. The way he wanted his SS to operate between the lines was also very innovative. We must also not forget that, in the first years of the PL, nobody experimented with inverted wingers/inside forwards more than him. There, one can argue, lies the big difference between then and now.

So, what do you think? Will it be worth the risk? If Pogba leaves on a free, we're talking about an investment of around 300 million Euros on top of the money we have already spent under Solskjaer.

Yes he clearly did, what are you on about  Villa was the perfect example, especially during 45-60 minutes where we were pinned in and Bruno kept launching balls to Greenwood which often led to us simply conceding possession which led to us being under pressure more.

That’s what he meant and it’s pretty obvious to the rest of us.

How can you attack too fast?

If you rush things and don't look up to find the best option, then you might be attacking too fast. If you pass the ball to a teammate before he's ready for it(which isn't always his fault), then you might also be attacking too fast.

At least that's my conclusion. But of course this madhouse is gonna interpret it as Ole somehow saying: "We were actually too good for our own good, hehe.. We need to power down! The world is not ready for our speed yet."
