So now he has to make the next step. We nearly won the EL because he messed up a group that was there for the winning. He has to get us out of the CL. He has admitted himself that now he is going to be judged, that it is a 3 year project.

I mentioned this in the game thread. That we went overboard after the Leeds game and were rubbish in the next games. Then the euphoria after Saturday and it has fallen flat again. He will need to lift them for the weekend.

You completely miss the point, he wasnt even linked because he wasnt fancied by any of them and the reason was not far fetched, he hasn't really done anything spectacular apart from buying good players for exorbitant prices.

Someone's true character comes out when they are faced with adversity and Ole has literally crapped the bed on many occasions in this situation.

Nothing against Ole, but his fear of losing far outweighs his desire to win.

It just smacks of someone being in a job that's way too big for him.

We are basically where we were when we finished bottom of our group in 2005-06. This United side has no record in Europe, it needs to start from scratch and build one.

Thinking back to our 2006-07 campaign we also had some bad group stage results and edgy wins. It was a team re-learning to be in the Champions League. At that stage in the learning curve you can't take for granted any result.

I would have taken a 1-0 and I am sure we'd have got it but for AWB. We definitely would have got a point but for Lingard.

I am as gutted as anyone but I have some perspective. It's been a long time since we were a European power. The way back there will involve stumbling blocks.
 
Let's see if he turns it around after a potential freak result. It'll be unforgivable if we fall at the group stage again though.

Last year we got eliminated because we lost to the minnows in a group of death. It was a freak group without a single draw (only group since 2017 without a draw) and the top 3 teams all beating each other once. Therefore a loss to the bottom team was critical.

We're not in that kind of group this time. Villareal and Atalanta aren't the PSG and Leipzig of last season. These two combined have won 1 out of 6 games in their respective leagues. One of them might find momentum and go on a run but both of them won't get 10+ points. Win our home games and we'll be fine.

It was a shit performance after the red card and Ole got it wrong tactically but being a man down away on an astro pitch isn't an ideal situation. We won't be this shit next time.

Well back then in 2006/7, we had a manger that already had proven it in that competition and in the epl.
This manager has shown nothing in terms of how he wants this team to play, the sum of our parts is far above what we are showing.

Honestly I wouldn't even disagree with that. My assessment was quite a charitable one given how slow this club is to act on these things.

We can only give Ole time for so long before we have to throw our hands up.

That's a load of tosh. Because he hasn't ever played CM before, he's expected to underhit a pass, under no pressure back to the goalkeeper, past our defence? Fred was clearly shattered, all Lingard had to do was anything than what he did. It's got sweet feck all to do with a "tactical" decision.
 
Been said already but if he fails to get out of this CL group then he has to go.

The entire first half was pretty underwhelming and until Greenwood forced a spill Newcastle looked quite comfortable. Then it was in the balance at 1-1 until Ronnie fired us in front. Was obviously a fantastic day in the end but wouldn't say we played great or dominated overall.

Leeds for me is the only totally convincing performance we've seen so far.

He has played CM before at the world cup (possibly the Euros?) for England. It was utterly brainless from Lingard.

Yeah, I'd call a 4-1 thrashing a good performance, but that's just me.
 
Seeing Lukaku's progress is something that makes me worry, we let him go for peanuts but it's clear to see how good he is with proper coaching, who knows how good our team could really be if we had it.

But so far we have faced no top side and our performances are still with many ????????.

Leeds = Very good performance
Southampton (Relegation side in my opinion) = Poor result and poor performance
Wolverhampton = We were very lucky because we should have been 3-0 or 4-0 down at half-time
Newcastle = Awful first half.....good second half.
Young Boys = No words.

Go to page 1568 or so and look. It isnt "criticism", its a bunch of toddlers having a meltdown. Playing armchair manager in hindsight, especially after a loss is the easiest thing in the world because you dont have to account for any eventuality where things actually go worse. The performance was terrible no doubt, but getting a player sent off in first half and then you have a player gift wrapping them a goal in overtime isn't something you can lay at the feet of the manager.

Plenty have come out from hiding, and they will go right back once things look good again, you can notice it from their absence when we do well

Fred should've seen the game out end of discussion, if he had it would've finished 1-1. The switch fecked with the shape of the midfield, which led to Lingard having a howler trying to play the deep role. It all could've been avoided with better tactics and management.

We got our money back, he was dreadful and Chelsea have hardly paid that much for him given the scarcity of strikers in Europe.

This revisionism with regard to Lukaku is puzzling. I blame our current manager for a lot of things but getting rid of Fellaini and Lukaku was great. I know Lukaku wanted to go but that's because he was rightly put on the bench.

Lukaku would do no nothing in our current team which creates no chances for our strikers in a solid 20/30% of our games.
