Official: Raul to leave Schalke

Wow. The reason he left Real for Schalke was first team football but now he's saying it's less important. In that case I'd love him here. He can still finish 90 minutes. He'd still be a better player than Welbeck or Hernandez (and Owen of course) but there would be a less problem in playing him less than it would Berbatov.
I'd be thrilled just to see him briefly in the United shirt.

Schalke will retire the n°7, wtf??

It clearly says for "a few years". It's not retiring, it's respecting a kit number. Schalke is not a very nice place to live and the team has rarely been anything other than "working class" in the footballing sense. Raul brought class to the club and the area. I think it's fair game for them to show respect.

That's too much imo. So in the past, did Schalke retire other kit numbers or is this the very first time?

Would rather have Raul or Del Piero rather than Owen. Totally wouldn't mind if either one of them comes here.

He has spoken of leaving Europe recently. Maybe he is looking for a big contract in places like Qatar or China or even the MLS.

Said something like his future doesn't lie in Europe. Could have been a really good signing.

Raul, Del Piero, or Drogba would be interesting prospects if Berba and Owen leave in the summer.

Do you really think that?

Of course. The only thing he doesn't have is speed and he never was a very quick player in his prime so he's coping well with the times. He's a much much much better finisher than Welbeck, better than Hernandez. There are few players that are on par with him in reading the game. His off the ball movement has always been one of his biggest strengths as well. So yes, I think he's a better player than both of them. I don't think it's even a question. After all they're all strikers and Hernandez game is lacking in parts and Welbeck isn't a very good goal scorer. In fact he's actually quite a poor finisher.

I don't think he'd be better than Berbatov. He might be, I don't know how he'd fit here, but he's be better than Welbeck or Hernandez. They're still lacking experience and Raúl is on par with Giggs and Scholes in that department.

Teddy at 35 was still a class act. And I have seen Raul chasing lost causes in a Schalke shirt for 60 minutes like a possessed demon when his team was down. I think he will be perfect to us. We need more experienced heads esp with G.Neville, Brown, Sheasy leaving past 2 years. Raul could do a Blanc and inspire rest of the players. And I think with Owen, Berbs leaving there will be space for 1 more experienced player

Am I imagining things or did he not say his future lies out of Europe? So we won't be getting him lads.

I thought so a first that he'd be out of the question seeing as he joined Schalke to play first team football but now he says he needs a bit less but is still not ruling out European football or going back to Spain even. That means if you really want him you could convince him to join. But he's a family man. But living in Gelschenkirken and moving from there to Manchester is a step up in culture and if they were happy in Germany then why not in England.

Personally, he is one player I would love to see playing for us but with the team that SAF is building now, I don't think he will fit in

Just to throw in what he said (to the Spanish reporters at least) about what happens next.

He told them that every player has to face the end of their playing days, but that he wants to prepare for a life still in football. He believes he can't do that and stay in a strong league like Spain or Germany. He said he wants to carry on enjoying playing while he's preparing for his next role in football and he''s looking at offers that let him do both.

My guess is he's got, "become manager of Real Madrid," on his things to do list and he fancies a player/some coaching job somewhere to learn the ropes. Perhaps he's inspired by Pep Guardiola's history - he went off to see the world, playing less and learning more - before he went home.

Guessing of course.
