Official: Raul to leave Schalke

yeah you got a point, is it confirmed btw? If it isnt then I doubt he would go there. There is lots of rumours all the time that legendary aging players have signed for middle eastern clubs

Our new no. 7

Seriously, he will get limited minutes on the pitch and I would hate seeing that, he's a legend and he deserves more than we can give.

Two sides to every coin.

He's experienced, scores goals, is staggeringly experienced in Europe, and unlike Owen he actually plays. He's also well respected and would be a good influence on the younger lads. Oh and he's on a free.

He wouldnt want to come i believe. He left Real because he wanted regular games, didnt he? He's unlikely to want to come here and sit on the bench now. Also, fwiw, i loved him as a player, such a legend. would much rather see him in a 2nd tier club playing regularly than sitting here on the bench all season. cant be denied that he'd be a great influence to have around the youngsters though.

He left Madrid because he was surplus to requirements of the incoming regime.

Yes, he was going to be 3rd choice and Mourinho wanted him to stay iirc. He wasnt willing to be a bench warmer though which is exactly what he'd be here. 4th choice.

That was nearly three years ago. He's older now and may be interested in actually winning a trophy or two before he retires rather than playing at some minnowish club.

The same can be said about Owen, difference is of course Raul is actually fit to play. If Raul wants to join us, then from a fan's point of view, he would be welcomed with open arms. However, financially and footballing-wise Raul is going backwards. he will be treated like Owen and I can't see him getting a huge paycheck from us.

Yep, might be interested in going out with a trophy in bag, you have a point there.

He doesn't strike me as a huge paycheck kind of guy. The fact that Berba is leaving and Owen is by no means guaranteed to be available sugget that Fergie may be incentivized to go with someone like Raul as a one or two year stop gap until he finds a new long term solution. Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Raul would be more than adequate for us and would be fantastic for the likes of Welbeck and Chicharito.

There was a time he would have been perfect for us....but that was 7 years ago.

Who's to say he'd be benched here?

He might still be better than Welbeck and Hernandez.

I think it's safe to say he'd get games.

SAF was a big admirer of Raul, but that was in the day , never happen.

he could help drum into hernandez what "playing on the shoulder" actually entails

What makes you say that? He's been earning six million euros per year with Schalke, not to mention the crazy sums he's earned from playing for Madrid all those years. Can you really see him taking a 50% pay cut to play for United when he could probably earn three times as much to go and play in China, America or in one of the Arab Gulf states?

Depends whether he's interested in padding his bank account or going out in style. He's made plenty of money in wages and endorsements his 18 years in football so not making big wages as a 35 year old isn't going to be the end of the world.

I think he's won enough trophies already though.

He's moving away from Schalke because they wouldn't match his current deal (as Real contibuted €2m to his current contract but obviously wouldn't to the next one) so yes, he's probably interested in money and wouldn't accept a massive pay cut.

He says he's looking for a "less competitive" league, and some people still think United might move for him?

You must be joking. Anyone who has seen him play this season in Germany or the CL knows he still has what it takes at any level. He's far more mobile than Owen, is far smarter, has a better all around game, and doesn't get injured as much. He's what Ole would have been if Ole didn't get injured - he'll last, like Del Piero for as long as he wants. His game is not based on anything other than smart movement and wonderful technique.

Given all of our strikers including Owen and Raul, I know who I'd want on the pitch with five minutes to go.

I actually think a Berbatov/Raul partnership would work out well

So what you're implying is Raul is good enough and if he plays for us he will get enough minutes on the pitch? I acknowledge Raul's ability, he's a class footballer, but he's not getting any younger. It's also clear Ferguson puts his faith in youth this season. Rooney and Welbeck/Hernandez starting with Hernandez/Welbeck coming on in the second half. I think Raul wants to play as often as he can. I don't think 5 minutes will be very satisfying for this guy.

If Raul accepts playing in the Carling Cup and FA games and a non-starting role in the PL then he's welcome to join us. I don't know his financial situation (possibly better than mine :p), but him waiting for offers from Asia and the U.S. is very telling. I totally understand him wanting to secure his already rosy future. Money is important and getting that last big fat paycheck before you retire is understandable.

He said that he won't move to a club in Europe, but more so to a country with a lower level of football.

Schalke have also stated that they won't give away their number seven jersey for the next years.

Why's that?
