Odion Ighalo

He really is a huge United fan. I remember he was going on all the time about playing for United would be the biggest dream while he was playing in Norway. He also said post our game against Watford that playing against United was the proudest moment of his career so far.

He was sensational at times in Norway years ago. Oh and he seemed like a humble guy back then, and the events that happened before he moved to Italy (oral agreement with another Norwegian club before he suddenly went to Italy) seemed like it was agent-driven stuff and not him acting unprofessional.

This season was the first time I've seen him play since then but he has really impressed me. I think he got more to his game than Vardy so I expect him to contribute more during the awaited goal drought for both than Vardy. Wouldn't mind a Saha 2.0 as earlier mentioned in this thread but still not sure if he's good enough for United.

At least if he's a United fan, you can guarantee he'd be pulling his balls out on the pitch...

I think he could be a very good signing.

We'd all like to get top quality, like Muller, Benzema etc, but that's not always possible.

Also, let's not forget that it's not like we got Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
It's all about finding strikers with the right attributes that fits our system.

How do you guys rate Deeney by the way?

I think both Ighalo and Deeney are very good players.
I think Deeney is your typical mid-table #9 really. Fine where he is in a squad that really plays to his strengths. Ighalo could probably deal with moving up a gear, but I don't believe we aren't that side- at least the side we seek to be (champions and European contention).

Lanzini anyone? Quicker, better dribbler, can play anywhere in a front 3?

Even if we sign top quality we need players like Ighalo to be backup in the long run. We lack numbers up front.

He's 5ft 10.
He doesn't work that hard (Deeney does the donkey work for him).
He's fast over short distances.

He makes a nuisance and bullies the CBs. Which is good enough for me as hard worker. And only 5 10? Wow he looks taller. I mean Blind is almost 5 10

Sign him up, put him on the bench, and then loan him to a championship team when the transfer window closes. Scoring goals is so over rated.

Get this guy signed up. Great talent who has scored for fun since coming to English football. He works extremely hard which i love to see in a striker. Loved having Tevez at United simply for the never say die attitude he had. And effort is just what's needed up front. Rooney tries too hard all over the pitch, and the likes of Depay, Mata, Januzaj when he was here last season just don't put pressure on the defence like a Tevez used to and like Ighalo would. That sort of pressure creates mistakes.

Would rather a hard working striker than a Di Maria 'here for the money' attacker...

Saha was awesome  before injuries.
No he wasn't, injuries aside, he had a 1 in 3 strike rate. The guy couldn't score a one on one to save his life, remember thinking each time he was one on one that he would miss and 9/10 he did. His penalties weren't all that great either.

I remember him having an amazing season in the championship for Fulham before he joined us but he was by no means awesome during his time. Not even close.

That's your opinion, but it's all contextual - he was playing in one of our longest transitional periods under Fergie, following up to a goal machines like RVN & Ole and playing with the likes of Djemba-Djemba, a young Ronaldo, Alan Smith etc.

He wasn't prolific by any means, but he played well with Rooney and Ronaldo, scored some great goals and was hard working. When RVN left Saha had a much more crucial impact on the team and was a key player, his scoring rate was pretty much identical to Rooney's & Ronaldo's he just played less due to injuries.
When he was fully fit he generally had a scoring rate of 1 in 2. It was his second season and his last season that skews the numbers to a 1 in 3 overall. His other 3 seasons he was 1 in 2.

Saha alone was a good, not great player for us, but it's what he provided to our front line as a whole that made him better than he actually was. Him, Ronaldo and Rooney was a great front line.

Injuries ruined it for Saha, but in 2006 he was fantastic for us when he didn't have a any injury problems.

As someone else pointed out, makes too much sense for Big Ed. Perfect January signing, United fan, hard working, right age profile to 'settle right in' and already used to the league.

Will never happen. We'll sign someone more 'marketable'.

The African market could be huge, I don't think apart from Fortune we've ever had an African first team player?.

Anyway he would happily be a bench player but work his nuts off at the same time. For a modest fee he would definitely be worth a gamble.

I don't know, but we don't even have a proper striker on the bench to come on with fresh legs and inject something or other. Not sure if this guy is good enough, maybe he's a late bloomer.

What is one of these threads without a youtube video?

Nothing too flashy, but he seems fast, gets into good positions and knows how to finish. Think he could definitely do a job for us in the short term and be a decent squad option long term

31 goals in 47 Watford appearances. He's United mad and wants to play for us. I say sign him up. He can't do any worse than our current forward line.

Please for the love of god don't let this happen. He is keeping my team afloat in Fantasy League, I need him to stay at Watford! But he's a strong hard working player that knows where the goal is. I think we need 1 top striker, 1 young striker with top potential and 1 striker who could become a squaddie. He could fill the role of the latter. We already have the potential player. Then time for a top striker in the summer.

Has the 2nd most losses of possession from a poor touch in the league this season (56).

Mane has the most (72).

I know the feeling :D

Ighalo definitely has something about him that makes me feel like he could succeed here and take his game to another level. Has scored very consistently during his time at Watford, getting promoted having basically no effect on his output. Good on the ball, quick, strong, knows how to finish... I'm all for it. Especially considering we don't have anyone apart from martial in that front 3. Would definitely improve us.

This.

We shouldn't be looking at short term fixes no matter how desperate our situation might seem.

I'd take a short term fix any day if it helped us secure champions league football. Not saying that should be Ighalo but I wouldn't turn it down.

Martial is bound to pick up an injury at some point. What then?

Liverpool-like signing.

Yes because Ronaldo, Messi, Bale and Suarez are all ligning up to sign a contract with us.

We need goals

Rooney scored 3
Martial scored 5
Mata scored 4
Depay scored 2

Ighalo has scored 14

He dreams of playing for United and is actually avaible this Januray to help save what remains of this season. It is not rocket science...

Will probably happen after the window closes and we don't strengthen the front line. Is everyone forgetting we have no backup striker, unless you want to include Will Keane.

Get overtaken by Chelsea and whrite off the season, because hey its the United way !

He plays with the correct positive attitude - always looking to face the goal and force the issue - unfortunately this is the exact opposite of VG's approach, so can't see this one happening. Would be great in the current Tottenham setup.

Could see us buying Kane for £80m, Spurs signing Ighalo for around £15m, and him scoring just as many.

I want to sign him, just so we can make him put in tackles on the left wing the next time we play Bournemouth. Then we can shout "Hammer Smith, Odion!"

I have watched him every week being a watford season ticket holder. He's an incredible player. As he's shown against chelsea and liverpool to name a few he can score any type of goal he wants, fashions chances for himself too. One if my favourite goals of his was recently against spurs where he had no right to score, but with the ball in the air he done what I haven't seen a striker do before in that just as dier was about to head it away, Ighalo spun and edged dier out the way as he was jumping in the air, rather then backing into him like most strikers would do. He knew he would be able to get the ball that way. He's very intelligent in that respect, has great feet and an incredible shot. His first goal against Everton was incredible the way he floored three defenders. He would be a great option for us.

I doubt we would seriously be in for him, but if we did i reckon he would be a first choice striker after a couple of months.
