ALAN KNOTT

Named in the All-Time Wisden XI ahead of Gilchrist.

He was, everybody has said, the finest wicketkeeper-batsman of all. But was he? It might be more prudent to call him the outstanding batsman-wicketkeeper, which is a slightly different thing. Gilchrist was a scintillating strokeplayer, and became a good wicketkeeper, so it is only fair to describe him in terms that do justice to his overall performance.

The greatest wicketkeeper-batsman was, and remains, Alan Knott. Most things can be argued either way, but this is one thing that can't. Raymond Illingworth, the captain when England regained the Ashes in Australia in 1970-71, said of Knott's work that it was simply not possible to keep wicket better than he did on that tour.

Knotty was a brave batsman, too, good enough to make a century against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson at their fastest and nastiest four winters later, and a faultless team man: loyal, modest, chivalrous. Like Gilchrist, in fact. Both men served the game yet, among the ranks of great stumpers, Knott of Kent and England stands supreme.

He doesn't get 16hrs, not wasting that much time. 8hrs from the last pick for both his picks, if he doesn't, @Skills can pick again.

Isn't that a little unfair though ? Maybe extend it to 10 hours ? If he's out, he's likely to be back by 00:00 IST.

How's it unfair? The time limit is for people to come on and make their pick. He has 2 on the trot but that doesn't mean he gets twice the time. Anyways, as you said, if he's out, he's back by midnight so that's fine.
