Oasis top Radiohead, Beatles in album poll

Easily one of the top 2 or 3. Every song is a classic, and for a debut album, it just makes it that much better.

dont know bout easily....im sure even noel gallagher would have qualms about that...ive no doubt the fact it is to a particular type of people of a certain age who would vote for this type of thing, typical Q readers really.

I wouldn't say rapidly, I have enjoyed all their albums and they are still huge. I do think though they're next album will define how they are remembered, if it is as good as DM or WTSMG, then they will be remembered as one of the greatest (if not the greatest), British band of all time, if it gets bad reviews though like DBTT, then they will be remembered for 'fading away'. Which would be a shame as they have given us some of the best songs in history. (In my opinion of course)

Reviews aren't everything.

It depends on whether or not the reviewer is having a love in or not. I remember SOTSOG getting great reviews, but pretty much being weak, whereas DBTT was a much better album (both musically and variation between songs), but was panned.

Besides, nowadays even the top bands tend to sell less after the first album, it's their live following that starts to matter more. As long as people still turn up to their gigs, they'll keep making music, and fans will still be happy.

Oh, and they also need to get rid of Ringo's son and get a proper full time drummer in to stop themselves sounding as bad as they have of late.

He's a good drummer, but uses the symbols far too much for the Oasis classics. Or maybe they've just all got too old to sound as heavy as they once were.

Oasis still have a huge following, no doubt about that. Can't wait for the new tour, going to try my best to get to a gig before they retire (Which I think will be sooner rather than later, Noel has already said he is now struggling to write songs as he has written about everything in his life).

Nah, it's because he is rich, and getting older and more bluesy. Besides, he always says that sort of stuff, then a new band comes out to inspire him (and give him more chords) and away he goes again.

I've seen them shitloads over the years, they haven't declined so much, just go through phases of looking bored, and like in my post above, really need a decent drummer to bring some life back.

Don't you like Zak Starkey? I know he isn't officially registered as a band member, but think he is an ace drummer.

Just listen to his drumming at the end of this (Around 3:40 in), absolutely brilliant.

Nah, Alan White was better. Like I said, I preferred them when they sounded more raw live, Noel's guitar has been getting progressively whinier and the drumming is just too glam.

Still a top live band, don't get me wrong, and well worth the price, I'd just like them to go a little more back to basics. Won't happen, but would be nice.

Nah they'll never get that kind of recognition.

You can't put them up alongside bands such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Radiohead etc they just aren't that good and haven't been consistantly good over a period of time. It takes more than one great album for that.

They aren't technically great, Liam can't sing for shit any more (his voice went a long time ago) and their songs have ripped of numerous artists over the years so they can't be classed as original either.

Good band that became very popular but doesn't make them great.

You also need to understand that these views come from someone that worshipped them whem DM came out, but as i have got older I have realised there shortcomings, I guess that comes with age though and a more mature ear (without sounding too patronising).

Take your point and I guess we'll see in August 08 when the new album is released. Hopefully it will be a cracker.

No, I take your point. Perhaps I'll be the same in 10 years or so.

I have to disagree about Liam though, think his voice is amazing, and Oasis songs just wouldn't be the same if it weren't for his unique voice.

On another note though I actually don't have a wide variance in music, one of these days I'm going to take the time to download the Caf's top 50 albums, maybe then I will change my mind. (Some of the albums and artists I had never heard off)

I can kind of agree with all of that, although I think you are underrating them a tad. They hit the mood of the nation at the time and perhaps were hyped too much, however songs like Live Forever, Whatever and the massively underrated Aquiesce are top tunes that stand up to all the other great songs of all time.

It's all down to opinion, of course, for example I can't stand Pink Floyd or Queen and think they are both overrated. Which is strange, because I'm a big fan of music that came before my time.

Before Digital downloads, I used to go into HMV or the like on a weekly basis and just pick a random CD.

Amongst all the shite, I found some really great albums and varied my music taste greatly. Now it's even easier to get hold of music you'd otherwise not notice, you should definitely try it.

I was the same at your age, I disregarded everything other than Indie and Rock, now I listen to all kinds of genres, you can't force it, it just happens over time.

And on Liam, his voice is completely different these days, too much drink and drugs has taken it's toll, you should have heard him ten years ago, the old classics don't sound like they used to with him singing now, sad but true.

One of the best Oasis tunes ever.

You get me wrong though, I still enjoy their early stuff, just that they went downhill from there, too many tunes that sounded too much like everything that had gone before in times gone by. Again that takes wider musical listening to understand, bands like The Beatles, The who, The Stones etc, it just became regurgitated in the end.

Think I'll give it a go, not tonight though, canny be arsed! Agree about Acquiesce as well, bloody brilliant song and hugely underrated.

I've seen many videos of him singing 10 years ago and now, and to be honest I like the variation in it. One day I'll want to listen to his old self, whereas on another day I'll go for a more modern approach to his music. Still one of the best singers out there in my opinion though. And he is a fecking legend aswell!

He's a fecking gimp imo, always liked Noel though.

then they will be remembered as one of the greatest (if not the greatest), British band of all time. (In my opinion of course)

i know we're all allowed our own opinions and all that...but thats just wrong.

What the feck is this bollocks? Definitely Maybe on of the top 2 or 3 British albums ever? Maybe if you've only been listening to music since the 90s.

And being a debut album doesn't make it better at all. It makes the feat more impressive, but the music isn't better just by virtue of the fact that it was their first.

Jesus Christ can't a guy have an opinion anymore?

On the other hand, just because an Album is older than the 90's, it doesn't mean it's better.

People seem to forget that.

Evening Gazza, though we might see you in here at some point.

Quite a strong opinion for you lad, it's usually you calling other people for these kind of posts :D

1. Definitely Maybe - Oasis

Back when I was young I loved the album like everyone else. But does anyone else think that looking back its so clichéd and cringe worthy (both musically and lyrically)? I question how an album with some of the following lyrics can be considered so high on a best of list:

"I've been driving in my car with my friend Mr. Soft
Mr. Clean and Mr. Ben are living in my loft
Shake along with me!"

"You make me laugh
Give me your autograph
Can I ride with you in your BMW ?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine"

"What a life it would be
If you would come to mine for tea
I'll pick you up at half past three
And we'll have lasagne
I'll treat you like a Queen
I'll give you strawberries and cream
And then your friends will all go green
For my lasagne"

"I hate the books you read and all your friends
Your music's shite it keeps me up all night"

"I hate the way that you are so sarcastic
And you're not very bright
You think that everything you've done's fantastic
Your music's shite it keeps me up all night"

It captured the mood at the time, but we're not 14 anymore.

The ones bigging them up now probably are though, there's a lot of younguns on here, I know e=mc2 is.

There isn't a law that says you have to listen to them, and you have focused on 4 songs there, what about Cigarettes & Alcohol, Rock 'N' Roll Star, Live Forever, some fecking awesome lyrics in there. Definitely Maybe should be a must in any best of list.

Is that some sort of sick joke that I don't get?

I disagree with you. To be the best album ever (as is being claimed) you can't have any naff songs or lyrics, let alone four songs. Just my opinion.

I'm not saying it is the best album ever, I was trying to imply that some may say it is the best British album ever. And it is impossible to name one album that stands above all the rest, it just can't be done.

It can, look at the Cafes list ;)

I agree with you on this. My 'favourite' album is totally arbitrary and depends on my mood at the time.
