Nordic Ghost Yeti (Scandi Carroll) | Haaland at City

Not really. Real Madrid started their Galacticos era with Ronaldo and Kaka and Benzema in summer 09. Ronaldo was their first signing. They hadn't gotten past the round of 16 in ages and lost 5-0 to Liverpool that year or the year before, and Liverpool were hardly the best team around. Barcelona was a different case, as they had won the CL that year, but Real Madrid were a bit shit at the time. Right now Real Madrid is in the CL final after recently winning 3 CL in a row, are signing Mbappe on a free this summer to add to their team, and regardless of PL money, they will always remain as the pinnacle for pretty much all players to have on their resume. The PL has had the most money for ages now, Real Madrid and Barcelona with their fans back will get their finances normalized again and will go back to spending big without too many issues. Their wages have always been stupid high anyway.

Well you are not wrong regarding the start of 2nd Galacticos era. But their first Galacticos has been going for long before that, and it was during the period Ronaldo start playing professional football, so it really depends which way you are looking at.

1st Galacticos
2000 - Figo, (Makelele)
2001 - Zidane
2002 - L.Ronaldo
2003 - Beckham
2004 - Owen
2005 - Robinho, Ramos

2007 - (Pepe, Marcelo, Higuain)

2nd Galaticos
2009 - Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, Alonso
2010 - Di Maria, Ozil
2011 - (Varane)
2012 - Modric, (Carvajal)
2013 - Bale, (Casemiro, Isco)
2014 - Kroos, James

I know. Their 1st Galacticos era ended in the mid 2000's and they had a good chunk of mediocrity until they signed Cristiano to kick-start the 2nd. Point is, Cristiano left United who had reached back to back CL finals and were in the semi's the year before those 2, three-peat PL winners when the league was the best in the world and regularly getting 3 teams in the CL semi finals, to go to a team who hadn't gotten past the Ro16 in ages. Real Madrid was a much worse side than United when Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid, but ultimately, it's Real Madrid. Them and Barcelona are essentially the pinnacle of football for most players in the world, regardless of current level and other teams having current dominance. They want to have it on their resumé that they played for them at some point. For Germans, this is Bayern, for Brits it's not so clear, but for pretty much everyone else, it's Barca or Real Madrid.

To be fair, first Galacticos era ended in 2006, and Ronaldo first expressed his wish to move to Real Madrid in 2018, so there isn't really long gap in between. Everyone still branded Real as Galacticos club, but surely an underperformed one.

Sure Real Madrid was a worst side than United when Ronaldo joining them, but there is always a glamorous factor to join a prestigious club to start new galacticos era, and I remember Barcelona was the best club in the world during mid-late 2000s, so there is always a bigger challenge going to Spain and playing for a Galaticos club and to compete with another best club.

Hahahaha.... We're guilty of using money to lure players. Poaching the best EPL have to offer in the past.

Let's not pretend we never flex our muscle.

Yes mate agreed. Not saying we don't spend money.

But we spend it with the concrete notion that Manchester United is the final/ultimate destination.

You only leave after you've won trophies and are no longer of the required standard. Not as a stepping stone to the next club.

That was when we were actually winning things. We haven't won anything for 5 years.

Yes but it was also based on the period when La Liga is at the very top with 2 super clubs and 2 GOATs sweeping up everything. They simply can’t compete with PL anymore in long term with TV money etc.

But the attraction is still there. For instance, Matthaus said once that his biggest regret in football was not being able to sign for Real Madrid from Inter Milan in 1991. The Italian league was the strongest in Europe by quite a big margin counting on the biggest budgets and Madrid not as global as now and quite limited economically compared to a big deal of clubs in Europe, but the aura was still there. It won't attract everyone, of course, but it helps explain how someone like Mbappe can renounce to a much superior offer from PSG to go there.

He's averaging a goal a game for a dreadful national team where he doesn't get any service and people think he'll flop in a team that creates a dozen chances per game

 This didn’t age well.

City are walking the league next couple of seasons, aren't they? :(

He just might, we'll see.

This is like your Ole obsession all over again, but at least Haaland is good tbf to you buddy.

What? Why?

Because he's pretended to care about human rights during his time with the national team for the past several years, but when time came to change clubs he's decided to join one of the worst violators of human rights in the world.

And his father was (and probably still is) a cnut of the highest order.

This is why “service” is usually a bollocks argument. Service is important but it’s far less important than movement and natural goalscoring instincts. The best bagsmen can score goals for anyone.

The oil clubs did RM dirty. You can have history, prestige etc. but at the end of the day money matters more.

One thing is the official number. Another thing is the hidden stuff. Money in offshore accounts etc.

Would I love him at Manchester United? Yes.

But clearly this lad has no loyalties. He wants to play in many leagues and probably will spend a maximum of 3 years at any one club (or so it seems at the moment).

You don't go inserting transfer clauses in your contract unless you are looking for a move in the short/medium term.

Not the right type of player for us. We've never been a club that does well with "mercenaries".
Once he is at City they can throw money at him (probably through shell companies) and also win trophies. No need for him to keep club hopping.

Shouldn't be necessary to say, but a team that beats Serbia and Sweden away isn't "dreadful". They've got enough good passers to feed him, especially on the counter-attack.

Haaland has scored 11 in 7 now, while before that he didn't click as well with the new team of Solbakken. It's about the way he's utilized in a team effort.

So using this logic, if you ever bought a product from Nike or Coca Cola, does that make you a cnut?

I think you are just hating the guy for the sake of it. He joined City because they have the current best squad and coach in the world = lots of titles and potentially goals.

Excuse me while I play the worlds smallest violin for Real Madrid. Someone oughta really give them some money

Every person who waffles about some undeserved, antitrust privilege can stick it where the sun doesn't shine

Most players do tend to get attached to City when they go there. I’m praying to God this guy just doesn’t work in Pep’s system because otherwise he’s gonna break records I think.

He scored a penalty that should not have been, and his second was a blunder of the highest order by the defender and then not great goal keeping either. He then proceeded to mis a one on one with the goalie. I only watched the second half, but aside from the gifted goal, he was quite anonymous.

Has Roy Keane got a son we can sign to break his legs

If the rest of the league have such a defeatist cowardly outlook they will. Just because everything seems to be going for them doesn't mean they'll run away with it. Look at that season we bought Veron; we'd just won the league at a canter and he was one of the best players around, I bet most thought we'd win a whole lot. We came third.

The club need to get some balls back this season and we need to at the very least give the likes of City and the Scousers bloody noses. At the very least. And move towards winning the league.

Its not like Haaland at Dortmund improved them in any way.

Haalands amazing, but so was Aguero (one of the all time PL greats). They'll be as good as they were with Sergio Aguero, which is a daunting task but not in insurmountable

If I was Pep and I had the option of signing a young Aguero or Haaland, it will be Aguero all day.

Hm, I think Haaland has showed way more potential than Agüero. His numbers and presence is almost unique. Perhaps the biggest goal scoring talent since Gerd Müller?

Ya know... For years people were on here mentioning him as the best, or among the best CBs in the world. But I watched him for Madrid and he regularly made mistakes with his defending. He was young and fast and showed an ability to play a long pass out of the back. But over the years he had some injuries as well as the inconsistancy and unreliability. My concern before we signed him was that I knew he made plenty of mistakes but I honestly didnt expect him to be as bad as he has been this season between the mistakes. I thought he would be our best CB with the occasional costly mistake. But instead he's been average (and none of our CBs have been any good) and made mistakes that would have seen Chris Smalling effigies burned by caf posters. His concentration is appalling and the amount of times he makes awkward contact with a clearance putting us at risk is poor.

They had Aguero for years and didn't manage to walk it every season

they have won 4 in the last 5 and 2 without a CF. Just signed the most promising forward. Liverpool may lose their 2 best forwards. What do you expect?

The precise qualities matter in this scenario, Haaland is a great talent no doubt but I feel he'll be best in a set up built to his strength, something I don't expect to happen in Man city.

We can argue all day about his ability. At least there’s one thing we can all agree on. He’s a fecking bell end.

He may well be a twat but what did he do wrong there? The defender was trash talking him on several occasions in the second half.

This from the defender is the most ridiculous thing I've read today:

“It is quite rude to say what he says, because I do not speak Norwegian and he does not speak Swedish, so I do not know how we have communicated. I do not speak English on the pitch, so it’s strange that he says things that I haven’t said.”

Maybe he's too thick to understand Norwegian but most people who speak one of these languages won't have any problems understanding the other.

Sadly we'll see a lot of people falling over themselves praising him in this thread. Gone are the days where we can shit on opposition players and wish them the worst. Players have as big a fan following/fare as anything.
