Nominations for the Michu-Benteke Award 2013/14

Yeah, it's his worst run for over 4 years which suggests to me it is just an unusual blip. Once he scores next he'll back to his usual self.

Redmond, are you serious? 1 goal in 25 games and he isn't even a regular starter for a relegation threatened Norwich. Navas, again no, he hasn't been as good as Negredo has for us. Matic only signed in January and has had a good start but nothing spectacular. Completely disagree with Willian, he had a slow start and is yet to justify his fee. Flamini has been a good signing but still not on the level as Negredo, same applies for Huddlestone and McCarthy. Lukaku is a loan signing and unless Everton get him permanently then Negredo is the better signing. None of the players you have mentioned have hit the heights of Negredo in his first months with City.

I'll point you back to the Premier League managers vote, 59% said he was the signing of the season. That speaks volumes for me.

Redmond has been very good for Norwich since signing. I won't argue against Navas, you've seen him more than I have. Matic has been excellent since signing for Chelsea. Flamini and Huddlestone haven't been as good, but value for money they've been quite a bit better. You just listed Barry as one of the signings of the season, yet you don't count Lukaku? Willian has been excellent.

You're right, most haven't been as good. If I spend £500m on Suarez and he scores 40 goals and you spend £50m on Van Persie and he only scores 20 who has the better deal? Of course Negredo has been better, but for £30m you expect him to be better. In terms of the signing of the season which has to take into account value for money, there have been others that have been as good.

The managers also had Pellegrini in the top three managers of the season which is bollocks.

If Pellegrini wins the league he deserves to be in the top 3 managers of the season, you're calling it bollocks but this is people more knowledgeable than us in the game who have seen him as one of the top 3 managers.

I counted Barry because they are very likely to get him for free at the end of the season. I 100% disagree about Redmond, ask any Norwich fan, he has not been very good. If he isn't making a relegation threatened team there is not a chance in hell he has been as good as Negredo.

Negredo's price was £16 million from what I've read, where do you get the £30 million figure? Flamini and Huddlestone have been good signings, no argument there, but for me Negredo's top level outshines theirs to a level that justifies his higher fee.

McCarthy has been our best player along with Coleman this season.

Fair enough, you've seen much more of him than me, but considering the price between the two was similar I'd still argue Negredo was excellent at the start and if he can return to that level then he is the better signing.

No he doesn't. Pulis, Rodgers and perhaps Martinez will have all done much better jobs. Again, he's spent £100 odd million. He's expected to win the league.

If you're going to count Barry you have to count Lukaku.

Negredo's price was £21m. Huddlestone and Flamini have both been better signings when you consider the price paid.

I'd argue Rodgers is the only one who has undeniably done better than Pellegrini this season. Pulis has done great but I think quite a few managers could have kept them up given just how bad Sunderland, Cardiff and Fulham have been. Martinez is debatable, he should really be finishing 5th or 6th and as things stand they are 5th.

I've already stated I'm counting Barry because they have a very good chance of retaining him permanently for free whereas this is much less likely for Lukaku. Plus, Barry was a shrewd signing while Lukaku was more of an 'obvious' one, for want of a better word.

For £20 million we have got a potentially very good striker who will do well for us domestically and in Europe. I'd say that is of greater value than what Huddlestone and Flamini will bring to their respective clubs.

I think they've both been as good as each other. Negredo has been excellent with rough patches and McCarthy has been consistently very good.

For the peanuts they paid for him, he has been very very good.

He's not even made their line-up 10 times this season. This is in a team that has been performing poorly. Look at his competition on the wings. Quite simply, if Redmond was having a good season, he would be starting week in week out. Worth pointing out he is often subbed off around the 60/70th minute mark even when he does start.

Pulis definitely has for me. If Martinez pushes Arsenal all the way for top 4 then he will have done better too.

Lukaku is being linked with Everton too. It's signing of this season, not of future seasons. This season Lukaku has been excellent and a great signing. Since when does how shrewd a signing is have anything to do with it? Van Persie was a really obvious signing to make, but he was still one of the best signing last year.

Hull's best player and a player who Arsenal have no one like.

Going off your logic where a player's price seems more important it's surprising you say Van Persie was signing of the season considering the signings of Michu and Benteke

It looks like Eriksen should be up there by now. He's performed very well in a disappointing Spurs team. Only £10M or however much it was as well.

Agreed. Would be interesting to see what he could do with equally-talented players ahead of him as well.

I believe I saw some stat saying he was the third best in terms of minutes per chance created in the league. Only Silva and Özil were better or something like that.

For the peanuts they paid for him, he has been very very good.

He simply hasn't been 'brilliant'. He may well turn out to be a brilliant signing down the line but, the criteria is how a player has performed this season - not how potentially great the signing may turn out to be.

Not sure what your looking at but you're mistaken. Redmond has made 29 appearances in the league this season, 10 coming off the bench and played in all cup matches. He has played in all matches except for 4. I'd say he is a regular and he probably doesn't start every week because he only just turned 20 last month.

I'd say Barry is just as 'obvious' as Lukaku. He gets a lot of stick from opposition fans but he was a regular in a top City side and the England national team. As a loan signing I think it is obvious he would bring great experience and ability to a side pushing for top 4. United fans will slag but he is a good player and always has been.

Flamini was Arsenal's best player after Ramsey at the start of the season for me too. He was a massive reason for their defence being so much tighter and if it weren't for him who know how many goals they would have let in and what position they'd be in the table. For a free signing he has been just superb.

Eriksen has been great too. In a bit of a mess of a Spurs side but he often brings the creativity and class that they're other players seem to lack. Surprised he was got at such a low price because of how big a name he is.

Many people laughed at the idea too and accused posters of Irish bias. I wonder how they feel now.

That's not how I remember it. Most on here were going on how good McCarthy could become.

59% of Premier League managers voted for him as the signing of the season. He has the same amount of goals as Sturridge this season in all competitions and is only 6 behind Suarez in all competitions.

Those things are always skewed due to the timing of the vote. Negredo had an amazing purple patch halfway through the season but he's looked absolutely awful for about 2 months now and hasn't scored since January I don't think.

Eurgh, typical sterotype Flamini inclusion. "Just what they need" "tough tackler" etc. This has been same old Arsenal and Flamini hasn't made a blind bit of difference.

Barry has been fantastic for Everton. Tends not to get any credit because his name is Gareth Barry.

Aye, he has been a brilliant signing for them. Himself and McCarthy have formed one of the most impressive CM partnerships in the league.

Really wish we had of went for McCarthy over Fellaini. Said it at the time and I most definitely say it now.

? Redmond has been a starter for the majority of the season and been a very consistant performer for a youngster in his first premier league season. And all he cost was £2 million up front.

The biggest part is he also stands out for England under 21s and will without a doubt play for the first team in the not too distant future. For £2 million.

I bet the guy who nominated Ricky van Wolfswinkel regrets that now. Has he still only got the one goal scored like 5 minutes into his debut and nothing else all season?
Yep that's his lot. He was scoring a fair bit during pre-season and coming up with confident statements about how he will get more than 20 goals. Made me believe that he would so I had him in my Fantasy League team. After the first game (although he did score) I realized this guy is a fraud and would be lucky to even get 5 goals for the season so I got rid of him. He has been utter shit.

I agree, he hasn't done anything special at all. All 3 you listed have had a better season.

Thank you so much for posting that. It's like at times during the season when Ramsey and Özil were playing great but people/pundits would try to construct a narrative where Flamini had been great for the reasons you've pointed out, basically just because he's got a different profile (= thug) than other Arse players.

It looks like he could win the league during his first season in the PL after remotivating a squad that looked like they didn't give a shit last season. Of course he spent a lot of money, but other league contenders did too. His buys have been pretty shrewd as well (Negredo and Fernandinho have been some of the best signings of the season for me, and Navas was a good buy as well).

They still don't look like they can't be asked at times, they just have enough quality to win 8/10 times. I don't feel his management has won them extra points the way it does with Mourinho or Fergie. He has a talented squad and they are winning games. If he was doing a good job they would be clear with the games in hand. Imagine Jose or Fergie had his squad?

Pulis, Rodgers and Martinez are all more deserving for me. Pochettino ahead of him too.

You weren't on your own on that either. Anyone who had watched him properly knew the potential was there. Given the area he operates in and what we still lack, hed have been fooking ideal. :(

Puncheon much be in with shout, his goals has effectively kept Palace up. Hes now been the match winner in 4 of their 1-0 wins this season.

He was good at Southampton too but didn't fit into Poch's plans. Dangerous player.
