I'm getting even more interested in hearing about Nintendo Switch 2 plans now.
A lot of developers, and particularly Nintendo themselves, have got a hell of a lot out of the Switch. I'd argue even if the people who are more critical of its capabilities looked back across the library they'd probably feel similar about how good some games still look and run. But it's quite clear and has been for a bit that even Nintendo are starting to have difficulties getting the games to hit the expected level. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door having to drop to 30fps, and the framerate issues with the last couple of more traditional Zelda games have become a bit more irksome.
I'm making an assumption that Nintendo have put smaller teams on these games with a significant amount of their staff power now being deployed into making exclusive Switch 2 games. Many a reason for this, largely it's just the right thing to do. But I think the lack of big exclusive titles for PS5/Xbox Series for their first few years was an eye-opener for Nintendo that they need to have some games like this to have any chance of a launch year that can get anywhere near the success of the first Switch. I also think there is an expectation that anyone who is wanting to alleviate the performance issues with any Switch games at this point will just be told in a roundabout way to buy a Switch 2 next year.
It'll be interesting if some games don't necessarily need big updates to tap into the increased capabilities of Switch 2, as we've seen with some games on other systems that can just tap into the raw power difference and the game runs how we might have expected to on the previous hardware. However, if updates are needed I think it will simply be a case of the teams that made these games having a skeleton staff that stay on that project a few months longer to create that update.
Nintendo has a surplus of games that sold well over a million copies and I do think the vast majority of them will have increased performance to some degree on the Switch. Some games may even go to the point of being repackaged as Switch 2 games such as Breath of the Wild.
