Nigel De Jong

feck no. Not a United player. Thankfully. Ugghghhgh

Good at what he does tbf to him

Of course not. It's not as if he plays for a team in contention for the title, is it?

I think Nigel De Jong would be a good signing for us. Before everyone slates me for it hear me out. He wouldn't cost too much. Van Gaal knows him well. Although he is not great technically he has a great determination and he would provide a lot of steel to the centre of midfield especially during away games. I think he would be a good squad player and would be very useful to have.

He's given Bresciano a very intense afternoon. Great energy and pressed him all over the pitch, still that recklessness in his game is a bit of a turn off for me even though some describe it as 'solidity'. For me I think it can also be interpreted as a liability at times.

I thought nothing can surprise me from latest newbies but they just keep on going. How much before someone suggests we should sign Tim Krul?

Louis van Gaal wants to make Dutch World Cup villain Nigel de Jong a Manchester United player, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People..

Holland coach Van Gaal has told the Old Trafford giants' executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to pursue a £6million deal for the AC Milan midfield enforcer – even though de Jong was a fan favourite at bitter rivals Manchester City.

Now though van Gaal wants to being the midfield hardman back to Manchester to bolster a United midfield woefully short of bite and physical presence.

Van Gaal wants players he can trust to steady the ship at United while building the layers that will make them a force again.

And he has identified De Jong as a player who will not cost a fortune, would be attainable and will do a vital job while he puts his stamp on United.

Milan had a poor season, finishing eighth in Serie A, and it’s believed the cash-strapped fallen Italian giants would cash-in on de Jong who has another year to go on the three season deal he signed after joining from City.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal has told Nicky Butt to carry on at Old Trafford.

The incoming Manchester United boss has spoken with reserve team boss Butt after being given a positive run down on his work by Ryan Giggs, van Gaal’s new No.2.

Butt was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Famous Five from the 1992 youth team that produced David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Gary and Phil Neville.

He sat with interim boss Giggs and Scholes in the dug-out for the last four games of the season after David Moyes was sacked.

People Sport understands Van Gaal wanted to reassure Butt his position at the club was safe ahead of several backroom changes.

But former United and Everton defender Phil Neville is still unsure of his future at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal will bring in pal Frans Hoek as goalkeeping coach, as well as opposition scouting expert Marcel Bout who worked with him at Bayern Munich.

Said in January I wouldn't mind him here. I know he's a cnut but I reckon we could do with someone like him in midfield.

I'd be gutted if we signed this thug. Thankfully, this is probably just the press doing their typical 'dutch' + 'footballer' = 'United target' routine.

I think he's a very limited footballer. I'd prefer to see us wait for the right player.

He'd vastly improve the defensive midfield role in our midfield.......he'd be a perfect fit really with another more creative box to box bloke beside him

Probably this. To be fair, I thought he did a very good job for City when they won the League first time round. The only way it'd work for us I think is if we brought someone absolutely top notch in alongside him. He would then in theory, do the leg work to allow the creative players ahead of him time and space to play. There are also some who seem to rate him highly...

I'd agree he was a perfect fit if he could also play football and wasn't a city reject who acts like a complete thug on the pitch.

Hugely underrated here apparently. One of the best ball winners in Europe in my opinion

Steve Bates also wrote an article about LvG not being happy with Woodward. Hope he is wrong with both.

Knew he'd be linked eventually. LVG seems to like a cynical bastard or two in his engine room tbf.

Amazed it's taken this long for the press to link him with us

It was inevitable that we'd be linked with him eventually. He's old, extremely limited, and should be avoided.

Would be funny to see his picture on a huge billboard in town with "welcome to Manchester" on it though!!

So what happens to Fellaini then.? Fellaini can't play box to box, or can he?

No! He is worse than Khedira! The only Dutch players I want are Depay, Blind and Strootman (when he is fit again).

His a bit of a Cnut but good at what he does.

He is a brilliant destroyer. Was Hollands best player against Australia.
He was immense against Australia. Must have intercepted, tackled and won the ball about 20 times that game. Made quite a few headed defensive clearances as well. Had one powerful shot on target and generally passed around well.
But some of his tackles were outright dangerous and stupid and could have caused serious injuries to the Aussie players.

He's always been a great DM and very underrated. I'd snap him up for £6 million. Can't understand some of the people turning their noses up have you actually seen the state of our midfield? Must be because he played for City I guess.

For 6m I'd be happy with him.

I think Liverpool should be all over him. Exactly what they need. Put him in Gerrard's role last season and they'd be champions now.

There's no valid reason not to go for him at £6m. He is a bit of a cnut but he is a good DM and in that sense is everything Fellaini isn't. When we signed Fellaini people were claiming he would add some presence to our midfield forgetting that he is a positionally inept target man. There's nothing whatsoever to moan about at £6m. It won't stop us going for our other midfield targets.

Selling Fellaini for £12-15m and buying NDJ for £6m would be good business.

Yes- I'd be happy with lower cost short term answers to plug gaps and improve squad whilst LVG gets to grips with the job. Big spend can be next year if needed.

Worst think we could do is buy average players for huge amounts (Fellaini) or spunk hundreds of millions on superstars before LVG even has a good opportunity to assess and improve what we've got.

We'd be mental to reject De Jong especially if he comes that cheap. Honestly I've never liked the guy he seems like a right cnut but look at the state of our midfield.

His good at what he does and would be a good stop gap.

Completely agree, it's better to plug the holes that contributed in costing us last term, get top four next season and rebuild from a position of strength. If we try to force matters right now we will have a dozen of average players, all on 100k or more and having blown all our money on them. If we could sign De Jong and Strootman, in January, in addition to the required strengthening at leftback and central defence then we would have enough to secure third place, given what we have in forward places.

This would be a low risk "value" signing. A quick and cheap fix to fill a glaring hole in our midfield, instantly improving our team significantly for a small sum of money.

Agreed, I'm not against bringing in two or three 28 or 29 year olds this summer as long as they are of a good enough quality to hit the ground running and improve us straight away. People would point out that such signings aren't typical United signings and to a certain extent they'd be right. It's not necessarily something I'd be happy with every year, but its not every summer you lose three players with 1600-1700 United appearances between them and are coming off the back of slumping from 1st to 7th, although I expect van Gaal to improve us significantly on that front too.

A bit of experience, as long as it's of genuine quality is fine with me this summer. If we can also manage to get one or two players in who are absolutely top class, then even better.

This would be a very good signing, appears to be some truth in it aswell.

De Jong, Shaw and a centre back would already give us a much better chance next season. Having a solid partner will probably help to get more out of Carrick.
