An extract :

Manchester United have stepped up their interest in the Benfica midfielders Nicolas Gaitan and Javi Garcia, placing their discussions with the Portuguese side on an official footing in an attempt to prevent other clubs getting in ahead of them.

United have asked Benfica, who advanced from United's group into the Champions League knockout stage, to notify them of any moves from other clubs for either of the two midfielders, both of whom impressed in this autumn's fixtures against Alex Ferguson's side.

Benfica have told United that Gaitan (23), who has a £39m release clause, has been the subject of interest from Valencia.

Seems vaguely realistic. Moreso than a lot of reports.

maybe gaitan will do a 'nasri'...ask for a transfer with the excuse of wanting to win the uefa cl...

Seriously, i cant see us paying 39m for anyone, let alone gaitan.

Their whole team probably isnt worth 39 million squids.

My view is that with our problems in midfield being so well publicized, wherever we go, we're going to get absolutely fleeced, so I wouldn't be surprised if we end up paying an absurd amount for a relatively unknown player, never mind this guy.

And also, remember it's 39 million euro, and the euro is going to be worth about a tuppence in a few weeks.

39 million... lol, yeah okay!

And article does have the £ sign, not the € one!

It's the norm in latin countries to have a release clause. Don't know why. Much better for clubs if they didn't.

Do players playing in the PL have 'release clauses'?

Every Tom, Dick & Harry in Portugal seems to have one, that's why we got fleeced for 5 times what Bebe was really worth.

This Gaitan is worth £8M tops imho...

Phil Jones, didn't we exactly match his release clause which was meant to be hidden, so we had to pay an undisclosed fee to say sorry as we obviously had inside information?

Valencia go elsewhere if a player costs more than 8-10 million euros, if they were asking about Gaitan it must've been before Benfica impressed in the champions league this season. Either that or this article is a load of rubbish, which is the most likely

Don't be dense.

The article says that his release clause is £39m, not that United are considering offering £39m; when has a player ever been sold for anywhere near the amount of his release clause?

I'm not saying there's any truth in our interest, it sounds like typical slow-news day fabrication, but at least get your facts right when criticising the article, or else you're no better than the hack who wrote it by taking one thing and making it out to be another.

Gaitan is better than many in here are giving him credit for but he's another winger so I can't see why we would be interested. As for Garcia, I've seen him play a few times and can never recall being impressed, he looks very ordinary.

Reports in Argentina claim Manchester United have tabled a €30m offer for Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan. Nothing from Portugal yet.

Big news from Argentina. Strong rumours from a lot of different sources that Man Utd have made a 30mil bid for Nico Gaitan

Respected media outlets in Argentina claiming #mufc have offered €30m for Benfica attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitán.

I can't believe that. He's a great talent no doubt but he isn't a player what we need right now.

That seems a crazy price when the likes of Gotze and Hazard would allegedly cost much the same.

I didn't really pay attention to him in our CL games v Benfica would he be a good signing considering the price?

Says it all

Remember when were supposed to sign that Rodriguez fella, that didn't work out did it? I don't trust anything that pops up on Twitter to be honest.

He's a feckin winger!!!

Looked more like a Silva/Mata player that many were crying out for that could float about in between the lines, would be very surprised but if we did go for him it would be a clear acceptance that outside of Modric and the Barcelona lads there's no-one who can be that playmaker in centre mid (and be worth the pretty penny everyone's asking for).

We could of signed Silva or Mata and still have a problem in central midfield though. I dont think either Silva or Mata could play centrally as part of a midfield 4.

Young has been pretty rubbish since signing though so he could be an improvement there if nothing else

Where would a guy like this play when you consider that in Rooney and Hernandez we have two forwards who will probably play when both are fit and in form?

Left wing I would imagine, although didn't he play right wing when we played Benfica at OT?

I watched a lot fo Benfica last year and he looks like an out and out winger to me. Hope you are right though

Not really sure. Him playing as a wide playmaker sort in that role that Giggs played so well back in 06/07, beginning on the left but rotating with Nani who plays similarly to how Ronaldo did as a wide player back then, with Welbeck playing the Saha role and Rooney a little deeper? Unlikely but it could be a possibility. Seems very unnecessary to go for another attacking player but what do I know. Still means we're missing a Scholes type but who knows, if there's no Scholes types out there that are gettable then this could be a way of working around it and we go for someone like Martinez (or maybe even Javi Garcia following the OP) alongside Carrick as a really solid base with those two players relied on to distribute the ball rather than dictate the play, allowing Gaitan and Rooney further up to act as the playmakers. Everyone was talking about whether Nasri and Sneijder would be the right players for deeper positions but maybe they were all being considered to play just ahead of the midfield?

If we did go out and buy another wide player all you can do is laugh. Chances are this is nonsense.

You said the same bloody thing about Valencia this far into his first season!

If there's one thing I don't worry about when Manchester United buy players is where they will play. Obviously a reason for SAF to make the purchase wouldn't there be?

Perhaps that's why I'm such a lousy transfer muppet. I wait for the club to announce things :/

I know Jonny Evans old coach quite well. Jonny and Corry came to their old team training a while back now, and said to us at the time that SAF always demands that his players train in 3 positions at youth and senior level...should the possibility of a red card, an injury or an injury crisis set in.

He said its something he looks for in any player, the ability to help the team by being versatile and not give off about it.
