NHL 2009-10 Season

Kessel to Toronto for two first and a second round pick. Worth it? I don't know, he's a very good young player but why loose two first rounders (probably in the 1-10 range) when you're rebuilding?

Because NOW they have the potential star to build around... great move, Burke has a plan.

God i feel such betrayal giving the Leafs props

I see your point and I also think they have an interesting team, but build with what? third round draft picks and free agency signings with huge cap hits? I doubt Kessel will be as influential as Sundin was and what did that star ever manage to win them?

And their prospects pool looks pretty thin as it is.

Damnit.

Rangers resign Dubinsky. Grachev and Lisin who have both played fantastically this pre-season along with Anisimov will not get the roles they deserve. Grachev will probably just be sent down. I'd rather see some rookie with great potential ply his trade, then some RFA who overestimates his value significantly and doesn't bust his ass at training camp with the rest of the team.

Ah well. The Rangers defensive corps should be interesting. Gilroy and Del Zotto are both very offensive-minded rookie defenseman who I see making the team. With Staal and Girardi both still very young, our future at defense isn't bad at least.

Kessel is overrated. Doesn't deserve that type of money IMO. At least not at this point in his career. 60 points on a highly offensive Bruins team isn't really anything out of the ordinary. He has to go out there and prove he's worth the type of money he just got.

So what's everyone's predictions for this year? I'll try and post mine sometime soon..

Anyway, looks like the Rangers have themselves a bit of a player here:

Both scored against legitimate goalies as well.

Nice hands and what a wrister on the second there. Things are looking a lot better for the Rangers now than it did a year ago. That Del Zotto kid is supposed to be very good too.

Rumor has it that Mats Sundin is announcing his retirement later today :(

EDIT:

Confirmed now.

He's been the best player and an awesome captain for the Swedish national team during my time. Kind of sucks when your childhood heroes retire. The youngsters can never really replace them.

It was hardly a shock, however how long do you think he'll stay away if the Leafs start off well? I don't think it's the last we've seen of him, though by the end of this season he's done for sure.

Got to agree he's been one hell of a player, and a decent captain to boot.

Got to say I'm glad that Robbie Schremp was claimed off waivers yesterday. Whilst I can't say that Pat Quinn has treated him badly, and to a lesser extent the Oilers organisation, he got so much crap off MacT for no reason.

I think he could be a great fit on the Island, and could turn out to be one of the steals of the season. Now I've said that, he'll suck so much that he'll make Ralph Milne look like Ronaldo.

He's talented as anything, but if you have no heart or desire, talent means very little. Just another player that will fail in a New York Islanders uniform these days.

What was up with the Islanders signing Biron and Roloson? Did they or did they not just recently sign Dipietro to a 15 year deal? That organization is weird..

I think Robbie will show up for the show, I think MacT crushed him. I wouldn't trust MacT to coach any team.

As for the goalie situation, it is very odd a 3 goalie system never works and never with 3 experienced guys like these 3. I'd say 2 months before one of the goalies leaves for pastures new.

I really think this is it. Even if the Leafs are doing great I don't think he's coming back since he has seemed to be winding down for some time now. I wish he could have won a Stanley Cup, but it didn't happen.

Anyhow, Schremp is a bit of an enigma isn't he? Insanely talented, but seems to be a bit of a nut case. Still a decent pick-up by the Islanders.

Anton Strålman is a really weird one. He pretty much looks like an all-star player whenever he plays for the national team, but haven't been able to establish himself in the NHL at all. So Calgary gave up a 2rd for him only to send him to Columbus for a 3rd a month later after having a good pre-season  This is probably his last chance to make it in the NHL, maybe he's one of those players who just doesn't cut it on smaller ice.

Cam Ward has just signed a 6 year extension, 6.3M/year.

DiPietro is still crocked and it's doubtful he will even play this year.

Toronto - Montreal was a really entertaining game that the Maple Leafs should have won but their D let them down.

I was at the game and have to agree, Montreal was badly outshot.

Thanks to the thug Komisarek (5 minor and 1 major penalty), the Habs pulled out the win.

Price was awesome.

GO HABS GO!

Lucky fecking habs is all i'll say . Banter aside, the Leafs looked the more composed side. Hopefully its the sign of things to come this season.

How do you shoot the puck 4 dozen times and still lose? Ask the Leafs

Komisarek is a cnut... I hope Markov heals quicker but I think it's important to play good hockey and have him back for the stretch run and limp into a potential playoff spot.

I like the build of this team, im impressed by the composure those Leafs had.

Bruins killing carolina 6-1 at the end of two. couple of fights just before the break with carolina players covering up like children.

edit...lot's of fights, some stitches and a little blood on the ice (from bleeding carolina players) and an unfortunate injury. eric cole, for carolina, probably lost for some time because of a knee. collision along the boards with dennis wideman of boston.

Leafs down big time in the 2nd, they got one back at the beginning of the second & they had the momentum to actually go on to score more, but the Capitals just have too much quality. Could be a big score this one.

i know it's only been two games but the caps look dangerous. they throttled the Bs last night too.

6 pts in 2 games for Ovechkin. The man is simply a monster.

Rangers first line of Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik looking pretty good so far. Dubinsky's showing he's deserving of that contract it seems. Looks better than I've ever seen him in these two games and the couple of preseason games he was in.

Anyway, how about the Blues beating the Red Wings twice over in Europe. They look like a pretty dangerous team. John Davidson and co have really worked wonders with that franchise for such a short time period.

Yeah, even after the first two games you can tell they're a side who will be there or there abouts this year.

Was quite surprised by the final score, thought it would be more one way traffic!

Bäckström is on top of the scoring table right now. Pretty awesome I'd say. Do you guys think the Caps could go the distance this year? I still think their D is below par, but someone like Alzner could break out. Their forwards are just incredible. Best in the league probably. And their Power play..

Semin-Bäckström-Knuble
Ovechkin-Green

Incredible.

I think (and hope) that the Blues could surprise a lot of people this year. Kariya looked great in the Stockholm games and Eric Johnson is going to be a great D man, no doubt. Just stay away from the golf course ;)

Johan Franzén injured for 4 - 6 months which probably means no olympics! feck! He would have been a key player for us in Vancouver. Please heal Mule.

Pretty good game between Detroit and Washington last night. Detroit lose so many players and still play great hockey. Don't think they'll go so far in the playoffs this time though.

Caught some of the Anaheim - Philadelphia game too. The Flyers are going to go far in the playoffs with that team. Selänne is still awesome.

Ducks - Rangers on now. Gaborik is a joy to watch and I like this Del Zotto kid.

I just watch Dallas sporadically, but they are a borderline play-off team IMO. They have some interesting young players to take over from Modano, Lehtinen etc like Benn, Neal, Eriksson.. They also have some quality players returning from injury this year like Morrow and Brad Richards who has started the year well but their D look quite weak and Turco still doesn't seem to be finding his old form (finished?). Ribeiro is a very good center too and Robidas is their best d-man.

They could make the play-offs with that team, but a lot depends on their goaltending.

Rangers are looking great so far. What a change from last year with all these promising d-men and the Gomez trade. I hope Gaborik stays healthy for you. He's one of the most entertaining players in the league.

Toronto on the other hand..

One team I think could surprise is Tampa Bay.. Everyone seem to regard them as one of the worst teams in the league but they have some exceptional players on their team and I don't think their goaltending tandem is as bad as it may seem.

Did anyone see Calgary - Chicago yesterday? I just saw the last period, but what a comeback by Chicago.

Looking good so far but will it last though, can Gaborik play 60+ games?

Finally out of Minni, apparently loves NY, and looks inspired... If I was a betting man he stays healthy for alot of this season, will probably miss less than a dozen games, and NY will compete.

The optimist in me says he can. Or maybe that's just me hoping. We need him to, as he is absolutely crucial to our success.

You've hit the nail on the head there. Del Zotto and Gilroy help us more than by just their acts. Del Zotto as powerplay QB takes an immense load off of Redden's back and he's actually playing, dare I say it, good hockey. Not 7.5 million per year hockey, but good hockey nonetheless. Add in Gilroy as the defenseman on the other powerplay unit, and Redden doesn't have to worry about the powerplay this year.

Speaking of young defenseman, Marc Staal is about as good as they come. The kid consistently shuts down Ovechkin and Crosby whenever we face them which is really an absurdly difficult task. If he can find a bit more offense in him, offense which is definitely there, he will become one of the biggest names on defense you'll hear about. He really deserves more love than he gets now though.

I saw highlights of that Calgary - Chicago game.. Wish I saw the real thing. Chicago is such a fantastic team to watch because of that vast amount of offensive talent. They sure showed it yesterday. Coming back from 5-0 down is amazing.
