NFL Thread 2014-2015

That sounds decent in the short term for the Niners. I reckon they have to win it all this season or Harbaugh will be sacked, which would be a bit harsh IMO.

Not really followed the Pats off-season after the draft. Hopefully we've signed some WRs!

I don't think Harbaugh will be sacked - wouldn't be surprised for him to sign an extension in the near future.

Think the Niners have a 2-3 year window for this current team to win it. Have high hopes for this year - although disappointed that Vernon Davis is sitting out of the voluntary workouts - thought the selfish side to him was lone gone.

The game isn’t bad but it doesn’t look all that great and isn’t really a jump up in the sense that NBA 2K14 was, even though that had its problems.

As for the Packers, well I’m hoping very well! NFC North is going to be competitive this season with both the Lions and Bears seemingly stronger but I think the Packers are in a strong position of their own. I was happy with the draft picks, especially the first round pick of Clinton Dix. He can hopefully earn a starting spot and produce in a area we were so bad at last season. The other players picked can all contribute and talk of the practices that Devante Adams is looking really good and could compete for the 3rd receiver spot

The one big thing is injuries. I’m not sure what it is but the Packers always seem to have more injuries than most and we’ve got quite a few players coming back off the back of bad/serious injuries. If the key players on defence can stay fit and do a job, which to be better than they were last season, then I think the offence with Rodgers is always possible to win you games. A few question marks still, TE being one with the Finley situation. I’d really like to see Finley back if he’s cleared. I worry it won’t happen though as if he does come back he’ll be demanding big money as he has a $10million insurance policy. Tough decision for him.

Forget someone?

I think the Vikings might suprise some folks. I saw some dude on Twitter list Vikings in the bottom 5 in terms of talent. That's ridiculous. We've got a new, excellent coaching staff and a bunch of talented, young players on our roster. I also have seen the projections. Vegas projects 5.5 wins I think, but some of the "experts" are saying 3-13, 4-12 etc. As I said, I think we'll suprise people.

Sorry, not forgetting but the Lions and Bears really do seem to have strengthened. I've not looked and projections yet as its still early days.

Jesus. The offseason is so shit. Too much speculation, I just wanna see people smash into each other!

Question. What is the big hype around Manziel? Is it just as he's a promising QB or did he do something special to make everyone love him?

Tebow # 2. Doesn't go through progressions, awful pocket passer, first instinct is to run, overextends plays and pisses off WRs, poor mechanics, throws a million interceptions, low work ethic, diva attitude. Most of the hype around Manziel was purely because he broke the mould of prototypical QBs at TAMU and made some exciting plays vs Bama in '12 where Evans bailed him out. That might fly in college and you win Heismans. But pro defences will eat him alive especially in a conference that has Geno Atkins, Burflict, Suggs, Polamalu. Only successful QBs his size are Wilson and Brees. He isn't as smart or accurate as either and Cleveland is the factory of sadness TBF what with Gordon's year long suspension.

Thanks, I just about know enough about football to make sense of that. Let's see how be does.

Marshawn Lynch and Seattle are having a slight contract dispute. Can't really be too annoyed at the guy for trying to get his due.

'Disparaging' Redskins team trademarks cancelled

The US Patent and Trademark Office has cancelled the Washington Redskins trademarks, finding the football team's name disparages Native Americans.

The case was filed on behalf of five Native Americans who argued the trademarked team name was offensive.

Members of the US Congress and many in the US sport media have called for the team's name to be changed.

But owner Daniel Snyder has refused, saying it honours Native Americans. The team may appeal against the decision.

In its decision released on Wednesday in the case of Blackhorse v Pro Football, Inc, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board said that federal law does not allow trademarks disparaging of individuals or groups.

"We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered," the board wrote.

The ruling applies to six trademarks - all containing the word Redskin - associated with the Washington DC National Football League (NFL) team.

The team can retain the trademark protection during an appeal process in the federal court system, however.

Should the trademarks ultimately be lost, the Redskins may continue using the name but will lose the right to sue those who infringe upon its use.

Last month, half of the US Senate called on the NFL to order Mr Snyder to change the team name, calling it a "racial slur".

In a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, the senators said the league could no longer ignore calls from Native American groups.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - who represents more than two dozen tribes in Nevada - also said on Monday he would no longer attend Redskins games until the name is changed.

Mr Obama, an American football fan, has also urged the Washington DC team to consider changing it.

But Mr Snyder cited polling he said suggested the public opposed a name change.

It really has reached the point with the name that Snyder has to know he will eventually lose this battle and have to change the team name, he might as well save himself a lot of grief and legal fees and just change the name already. Plus think of all the money he can make on this. First off you will get the diehard fans and collectors who will rush to buy all the Redskin merchandise they can, so he makes money there. Then all the diehard fans who will rush out to buy the knew merchandise with the teams new logo on it, so he makes money there.

So what are some suggestions for Washington's new team mascot?

Some inventive ways to go include

1) The Roosters only use the more common term....The Cocks. Maybe the Fighting Cocks. Though animal rights groups won't like the reference to Cock Fighting. So maybe just The Cocks. I believe there is one type of Rooster called the Red Rooster, so just turn it a round a little and call themselves the Red Cocks. Reason for doing this? Make every tv sports announcer have to say Cocks on the air. Make the commisioner have to say Cocks whenever he mentions the team. Childish? Yes of course it is.
2) Alternate between The Donkeys and The Elephants depending on which political party holds the Presidency.
3) Back the call for the legalization of Marijuana and just put a big old pot leaf on the side of their helmets.
4) Keep the name Redskins, change mascot to a sunburnt bikini clad supermodel.
5) The Fighting Whities..though it might already have a copyright on it.

Ah, jeez. Off-season NFL stories are so lame. I'm so desperate for some action I'd even watch college football right now! :(

Dion Jordan 4 game suspension for PEDs.

Why is players taking steroids not such a big issue. If this was a "soccer" player it would be huge news..

Jimmy Graham agrees new 'long-term' deal with Saints.

4 years, $40 million, $21 million guaranteed.

Question. What is the big hype around Manziel? Is it just as he's a promising QB or did he do something special to make everyone love him?
Manziel did win the Heisman Trophy a couple years ago as a freshman. But moreso, he's got a gunslinger, go-for-broke type of mentality with a penchant of making something out of nothing due to his ability to extend plays with his running ability. All that combined with his off the field persona, has contributed to the hype and personality of "Johnny Football". Agree with Invictus somewhat on the Tebow comparison, but Manziel can actually throw the ball unlike him. Whether Manziel will find success in the NFL is up for debate. Bigger, faster, stronger athletes he'll now be facing means he'll definitely have to dial back on his freelancing ways in college, or he'll find himself injured pretty quickly. In short, exciting player who has an outsized personality that the media is devoting an incredible amount of attention to a la Tebow. Fans will want to watch either way to see him succeed or fail.

Manzil has the smell of a u21's football/soccer player who's pacey and does a pile of stepovers, but feck knows if they'll work hard and make it or end up thinking they're big time before they've done shit and fold.

Aka, Zaha, except NFL is far more unforgiving and I'd imagine he'll sink or swim pretty quickly.

I've now seen a few YouTube videos and seen some of the hype across social media, I get it.

Look forward to seeing if he can keep that up for the Brown's.

Yup pretty ignorant comments.

Anyway has Sam really created any distractions since the draft ? I don't think so, apart from the Oprah thing.

Some people just need to get on with the times.

Its not Michael Sam creating the distraction, its the whole media circus around him thats creating it, the fact that a comment about whether Tony Dungy would have drafted him or not is now a massive news story if proof of this
