NFL 2024

Tomlin once again choosing to punt on 4th-and-2 yet went for it on 4th-and-20 previously. Doesn't matter where it occurs on the field when losing by three scores with under six minutes remaining.

I’ve not been able to watch most of it, but I’m pretty sure I sure the Steelers punt near halfway on a 4th and 1 while down a TD.

You can’t do that against the Chiefs.

One major issue with having this holiday schedule is that for a sport like NFL the quality will be bad with shorter breaks between games

Yeah you don’t deserve to get in if you give it to Mixon 3 times and don’t target your 6’4 WR1 even once.

Lamar is insane man. How long did he extend that play for? There’s no stopping that.

Lamar is apparently skipping the half time team talk to watch Beyonce. He's just making sure the Ravens are a few scores up so Harbaugh don't mind.

Gotta be a high chance of scorigami if the Texans end up with 2.

If Chiefs arent going to 3peat it will be somebody beating them at the Arrowheads, cant see any NFC team beating them, or the Bills, or the Ravens, for that matter.

I think you're doing the lions and vikings a bit of a disservice. They are both very good as well.

Where he has a point is that both the Vikings and Lions will have issues against anyone that can force man to man coverage. And I believe that these three teams can especially the Bills and Ravens. The question is whether the AFC teams can reliably stop the Vikings, Packers and Lions offenses or even the Rams.

Bridgewater coming out of retirement (fresh off winning a HS state championship as a coach) and will be signing with the Lions.

Did not see that coming.

it’s a tough call, but I’m not sure whose worse at their job: the Bears OL coach or United’s set piece coach. It’s close

The NBA should just get their opening night on Christmas in the future, nobody is really interested in those first three months anyway during NFL (and college football, and the World Series, and MLS playoffs, …).

The OL is being scapegoated a little bit. Caleb Williams takes on average 2.91 seconds which if I'm not mistaken is the 33th longest in the league. With maybe one or two exceptions the only QBs that have more time are behind way above average OLines and teams that focus on long developing routes. The biggest issue for Caleb is himself and his QB coach.

Yeah, the problem was definitely holding onto the ball too long on the last play……..

No doubt some of it is on him, but he is 4th in the league in hurries and first in blitzes faced and throw aways, so he is definitely on the run quite a bit.

I don't really see how sarcasm is useful here. If you blame coaching then it has to be about something that is systematic and not the last play of a game, especially when that play isn't even on the OLine. All OLines including the very best have botched plays during pretty much every games and it can be for a variety of reasons including the QB+Center failing to readjust protection which is a failing of both. In this case we are talking about an 8 men blitz and you have two Seahawks players that are unblocked to his right. Somehow Williams didn't adjust protection, he doesn't even have the common sense to relocate his RB to his right, that's 100% on him. But to be fair the play called makes it impossible anyway, in this case ideally you either go with max protection or you throw very quickly, the former is nearly impossible when you call a play that uses 11 personnel with all your receivers in a bunch, so you have to throw very quickly and gamble on YAC.

Now the hurries stat is interesting because the top 5 is made of Stroud, Lamar Jackson, Darnold, Williams and Mahomes. Now there are different context to these, Mahomes is in the bottom five when it comes to time in the pocket before a throw is made or pressures, Stroud is bottom 10 iirc it is accepted that both of these teams have had poor pass blocking and the stats show it but it's not the same story for the Vikings and Bears who are top 10 in time allowed in the pocket, the Vikings use long developing plays and require long pass blocking sequences which often ends with a pressure or a hurry, Williams tend to hang onto the ball and then scramble which is why he has both time in the pocket and a lot of hurries but not many hits. And Lamar is in a sort of inbetween due to his style, he has time to throw but will often scramble which is why he also has a lot of hurries, very little hits but in his case it's by design. An other thing about Stroud, Williams and Jackson, they see way more blitz than most QBs, they are all in the top 5.

To me it's fairly obvious while watching the Bears, that Williams and play calling are the main issues.

It's not on Williams for me. Chicago is just not the right environment for a (rookie) QB to thrive. He's the first Bears QB to start every game in a season since friggin 2009. I think no QB in Bears history has ever thrown for 4k yards in a season? Justin Fields immediately showed more promise in a few starts in Pittsburgh under a defensive HC and a dinosaur OC than he did in his entire stint in Chicago.

Obviously not saying he's been great or flawless or anything like that, but imo he's having a good rookie season, just needs more experience and someone who can actually develop him into an NFL player. Pete Carroll would be nice, I think. Kyle Shanahan would be the dream.

It's on Williams in the sense that it is his flaws and tendencies that create lot of their issues and it's obviously largely on the coaching staff for not only calling plays that would be dubious for a veteran but are just plain stupid when you have a rookie QB that struggles with adjusting protection or going through his progression at a high level. It's the combination of bad coaching/game calling and the inherent flaws of the player that are causing these issues.

Now I do believe that he has incredible raw talent and within two years of good coaching I can see him be an elite QB.

The phrase "having a good rookie season" must have changed since I last used it and is instead being used as a euphemism for playing like crap. That must be it.
