I'm generally of the opinion that the Seahawks were right to pass the ball; the problem was that they ran the same goal-line play they always did and Malcolm Butler had picked up on their tendencies.
If you look at it in further detail, they had 2nd and Goal from the 1 with one time-out remaining and then snapped the ball with 0:26 left on the clock. If you run the ball there and get stuffed, you likely have to use your time-out immediately; on the other hand, you still have the time-out if it's an incomplete pass. Personally, I think their plan should have been to pass on 2nd down, run on 3rd down and then use the time-out, and then either run or pass on 4th down. If you run there on 2nd down and use the time-out after, everyone knows you're passing on 3rd and Goal, whereas if the 2nd down play results in an incomplete pass, you can plausibly either run or pass the ball.
And then you also have to consider that the Patriots had sold out versus the run. The one thing the Patriots wanted the Seahawks to do was to run the ball up the gut. Given the look the Patriots defense gave, the Seahawks were right to pass the ball. It's just that they should have known better than to run the same pick play they always ran at the goal-line.
