This is great from Riddick
The media is currently pushing a 'Dolphins should draft a new QB' narrative for clicks. Give me a fecking break.
Tua finished last season unable to walk. He had no offseaon. He had no preseason. He started the season on the bench, eventually took over as the starter - with an mediocre OC who only came out of retirement (after being fired by the rest of the division) because he fancied working with his best pal Fitz for a 7th season.
And you know what? He did fine for a rookie. He looked terrific some games, such as Arizona and KC, was ok in others and had a couple of rough games against Denver (Miami was not even close to ready for the what Fangio threw at us) and Buffalo - a game where we were beaten down on O, D and special teams where they scored a punt return TD.
Something that must also be remembered when piling on Tua. The offense he was working with:
WR1 Devante Parker - injured for much of the season. Has one really good season out of 6 in Miami.
WR2 Preston Williams - IR for most of the season, played one game with Tua and caught two TDs. Got hurt celebrating the TD.
WR3 Albert Wilson - Opted out for the season
WR4 Jakeem Grant - Has worse hands than my cat, dropped key passes and deep ball TDs in I believe 4 games in a row. Eventually went on IR
WR 5 Allen Hurns - Also opted out for the season
WR5 Lynn Bowden - College QB last year, drafted by the raiders as a RB, a month later traded to Miami on a cheap deal and converted to a WR. Was a pleasant surprise.
WR6 Mack Collins - Also has worse hands than my cat.
WR7 Isiah Ford - Traded to NE for a 7th round pick, cut by NE, signed back to Dolphins PS, ended up starting multiple games at end of the season.
WR7 Malcom Perry - 7th round pick, also a college QB last year.
I read earlier, that just last week against Buffalo, the receivers dropped something like 9 catchable passes for 141 yards.
TE - Mike Gesicki - a very good pass catching TE. Of little use when Gailey insists on throwing 2 yard passes but started to build some chemistry with Tua and after a 2 TD game promptly got injured and carried this for the rest of the season.
TE - Smythe and Shaheen, usually blocking TEs, due to the dreadful WR core both ended up catching a lot of passes and played well!
RB1 - Doesn't exist.
RB2 - Gaskin and his college backup Ahmed. Both had good moments with limited talent. Both got injured. We also had statistically one of the worst running games in the league for much of the season, but both should play a role going forwards.
RB3 Matt Bredia - we traded for him during the draft, he was supposed to be split carries with Howard. Got injured and did next to nothing for the rest of the season. Something like 200 yards and 0 TDs.
RB 83- Jordan Howard. The previously mentioned pass catching cat might also be a better runner. Signed in free agency to be the starting RB, averaged 1 yard per carry, quickly became a healthy gameday inactive and was cut.
Not sure if all 4 guys combined for 1000 yards and 5 tds.
And as for the genius running the offense Chan Gailey? There is a reason why it seemed the entire Dolphins fanbase on twitter was celebrating the (fake) news that he was fired yesterday. It seemed strange from day 1 that this failed Jets and Bills coach was dragged out of long term retirement to coach the Dolphins. Yes he is Ryan Fitzpatrick's football soulmate, Fitz has been his starting QB for the 7 odd years in a row, but Fitz is now a 38 year old journeyman QB and everyone knew the Dolphins would leave the 2020 draft with a first round QB. He called two completely different game plans this year, one with Fitz and the other with Tua. He only turned away from 2 yard passes and pointless screens when the game was getting away from us and Flores forced him to change it. He had a QB who flourished in a fast paced, attacking College offense and this was his attitude:
While Flores has been the entire season standing on the sideline gesturing for more tempo on O. There was talk in the Miami media that the first time Tua was benched, this was because it was the only way Gailey would run the no huddle. I have no idea why Gailey was hired in the first place, I hated it from day 1. There has been whispers that when he is fired/suddenly decides to spend more time with his family, Miami could look at a serious OC like Bill O'Brien, which would be very exciting. Chan Gailey may have been a decent Dolphins OC in 2000, but the 2020 version was underwhelming. Flo has done so much right in Miami, this hire was terrible.
I am not saying Tua was perfect this year, he wasn't and I admit I expected more at times. He had bad throws like the one in buffalo last week which was far too high, and he also had unlucky moments like the pick 6 v Buffalo where Parker just fell over at the top of his route and was sitting on the floor looking up at the CB make the catch. Justin Herbert was incredibly impressive this season and has set a clear benchmark for the rest of the draft class - I see why many comparisons are being made on twitter.. But Herbert wasn't throwing to Isiah Ford and Mack Collins and whilst Anthony Lynn may have got fired, I doubt many Chargers fans will call for Chan Gailey to replace him.
Rather than the inevitable QB talk that the networks try to drive for the next 5 months, the Dolphins need to find an OC whos playbook isnt rooted in the 1980s, draft DeVonta Smith, find a dynamic running back and start to put some weapons around their young QB. Look how important Diggs has been for Josh Allen. Last year everyone thought we would take a first round RB and ended up with a backup slot corner. The offense lacks talent and investment at virtually every position. That must change, because when Tua does have some help, he does this:
Rant over. I am not objective, getting Tua was the QB draft of my dreams. But all this sudden talk about drafting a QB because of Tuas supposed lack of talent annoys me. WTF is Zach Wilson going to do throwing 2 yard passes to Mack Collins?
