Kaep to start.

Hope he does well. Will be interesting to see the reaction he gets from fans & the opposing players.

Very happy to hear that Kap is going to start and really hope he does well.

I hope he plays with confidence. My criticism of Alex Smith was that he rarely attempted any longer passes downfield - and this is also where Gabbert has struggled. When Kap first replaced Smith he was more willing to look to throw a bit deeper.

I believe our OL over the past couple of years has been absolutely shocking. It actually looks better this year - Gabbert hasn't been sacked all that much - and the running game has looked a tiny bit better (although not close to what it was with Gore). This image from last season I think summed up my feelings as to the OL preventing any QB looking good:

I also want to see Kap given freedom to run - and hopefully not alway just via the read option (as I think defences are pretty good at disrupting this now). I heard a lot about how athletic Gabbert is, and that his 40 yard time is very very close to Kap's. Whilt it may be close, Gabbert does not scare defences with his running ability and speed in the same way Kap does (or at least did). When Kap runs he seems to cover a lot of ground very quickly - this clip is a perfect example:

Anyway, fingers crossed it goes well for him :)

I'm surprised how positive you are Swoosh, the Niners fans I've seen and known are rather negative.

It is an element of blind optimism.

When Kap was playing at his best, I loved watching him - he was exciting in the same way a young Ronaldo was. Granted, not everything worked, but he was fearless and could make something happen.

I am not expecting our offense to suddenly kick into gear - we have numerous issues that will prevent that. But I am a big fan of his. His ceiling is still higher than Gabbert's so am hoping he can work his way back there.

The D Line is bad, the O line is bad and their secondary is bad.

Pretty much this. Cam Newton hasn't even been their biggest problem apart from obviously missing the game yesterday.

Especially the defence is shockingly disappointing. Yes, Josh Norman left, which in hindsight was a stupid move, but they've done absolutely nothing to resolve the problems in the secondary other than drafting three cornerbacks with big question marks hanging over them. James Bradberry, the only one of the three who's been any good, has been out for the last two games, which doesn't help either.

The most surprising has to be the interior d-line. Kawann Short was arguably the best rushing interior lineman in the NFL last season(probably second to Donald) and he's been a shadow of himself so far this season. He was even benched for periods last night. The outside pass-rush is horrible as well, but it was below average last season as well, only masked by the brilliant interior d-line. Gettleman has done feck all to address that during the off-season, which is catching up now. And even the linebackers seem to be struggling in run-defence, which has probably been their biggest strength for the past seasons.

I wouldn't say that the o-line is that bad, although it could seem that way from watching the games against the Broncos and Vikings - but those are the two best defences in the league. It's probably bang average. Oher and Remmers have been injured on-and-off so far this season, so there's been a lot of rotation on the line. But they probably overachieved for the most part last season, and that's being exposed now - especially when the playbook doesn't seem to include short passing plays at all. And Newton tends to hold on to the ball a little too long and look for the big plays down the field too much.

But it seems like a massive Super Bowl loss hangover, tbf. If that field goal in the first game in Denver had gone in, I think we'd have seen a different team going forward. They just seem mentally weak at the moment, and I doubt they get into the play-offs this year.

Oh, and Graham Gano has missed some awful field goals which have cost a few games.

I remember watching them last season and thinking how much time they were giving to Newton to throw the ball, so I thought their o line was actually quite good. Especially against Seattle and Arizona I felt like Newton had much more time than Wilson and Palmer. Against Seattle their pass rush was also much better than Seattle's. Obviously that changed a lot against Denver. Can't say I've been into this sport for long, so good to know and thanks for the replies. And no thanks to @Rado_N for that sneaky comment! Doh.

Yeah definitely agree with you there.

I've seen a few comments showing a little disappointment that he'll lead you to only a couple more wins and out of the good draft positions. Views?

Yes, the o-line seemed very good for the most part last season. But something has definitely changed since the Super Bowl defeat. And it doesn't just come down to a few injuries. I think it's a combination of a) Denver have made the recipe of how to successfully pass rush/contain Cam known to the rest of the league b) their confidence has been shot since the Super Bowl where they took a hell of a beating.

Anybody else listening to any NFL podcasts? I can especially recommend the Simms and Lefkoe Podcast, Around the NFL Podcast and the MMQB Podcast with Peter King, where he does some great interviews with some of the big NFL personalities. For example, there is a 40+ minutes interview with Elway where he talks about his time as GM.

Yeah, the recipe is basically to push down the middle without collapsing the pocket and make your pass rushers rush from a wider spot without rushing too deep.

Yeah - I mean every game we win this season is only going to lower our draft pick - it's not going to get us into the playoffs. SO I can see that point of view.

Personally I would like to see Kap come in and helps us be competitive in every game. I think if he plays well, then that sets us up for next season better than any draft pick would.

If you ever get the chance to play with @swooshboy on PS4 with a mic, you'll hear the patented 'swoosh sigh'. The bastard can be quite negative at times :p

Read somewhere that Rivers is the last QB to throw multiple TDs against the Broncos, in Week 17 of last season...

Well on his way to repeat that feat tonight.

Ridiculous though how Rivers keeps this Chargers team afloat without Keenan Allen, Woodhead and many many others. They could've easily been 4-2 right now, blowing 10+ leads in the fourth quarter twice already.

Trying the NFL Gamepass free trial today. Pretty sweet.

Gonna use it for the Packers/Cowboys game (my team vs my brothers)
redzone for the rest :P

The feck is happening with all these injuries today.
