Yeah, depends on what you aim for in your career of course. Duncan did it as well and Spurs are still title contenders almost every year, while Bryant didn't take a paycut and look where the Lakers are right now... I find it very odd he chose for the money contract over the possibility of another ring, especially if you consider what an ultimate competitor he is.

I can't fault an athlete trying to get paid.

Me neither, mind you, especially in the NFL where your career can be over on any given snap. I do have great respect for those players taking a paycut to allow the team to improve though, very admirable thing to do.

Quite surprising, I would have guessed he was a glory/legacy guy too.

Off-topic, but the Lakers aren't where they're at cos Kobe refused a paycut. Lakers have been a mess ever since Phil retired and Dr Buss passed away.

And also they're not taking a "paycut" per se, they're re-structuring their contracts. Huge difference.

I know that but it could've helped in the rebuilding process nevertheless.

They're all earning less money than they could be earning, that's the main thing. Duncan almost cut his salary in half this Summer to allow the Spurs to resign Leonard and sign Aldridge, reportedly.

Anyway, probably not the right thread for this discussion indeed.

My fellow alums aren't doing too well in Chip Kelly's system. The defense (and the Giants) might bail them out tonight though.

Kobe actually took paycuts in the past, which is why he even got to #5.

Not opting to take a paycut in his last major deal should not be faulted, at all. I mean, look how old he is.

Short week for Seattle and SF.

Predictions? I think we'll steal it with a pick 6 in a low scoring affair.

As long as we're not leading going into the 4th quarter, I'll be confident.

I fully trust my Niners to do everything in their power to help Seattle back into the saddle.

I think my Niners will either win closely, or it will be a blowout win for Seattle.

Depends which Niners team shows up.

Make no mistake. It will start off with a bang, the fan culture is great, fans clearly love the sport, the economic impact cannot be disputed as well, but what's going to happen when the honeymoon phase ends? Will the franchise continually generate sustainable income? what's the likelihood of it lasting actually lasting a decade?

Surpsingly interesting matchup tonight, would have expected a Seattle blowout before the season started, but if the 49ers just leave them with a short lead to start the 4th, it's in the bag.

The problem with a London franchise is that most NFL fans in England already have teams, and likely won't ditch them for the London Whatevers, so they'll mostly get day tripper fans that'll be hard to sustain a franchise and fanbase on.

Plus, they'd be playing at the Spuds stadium, so they can go feck themselves with rakes.

I feel that the team who is going to draft Leonard Fournette will have won the lottery.

 I'm stealing that expression

Also, the team will undoubtedly be terrible. I can see loads of players not wanting to live in a different country. They would struggle with free agents

Tell them that french girls are across the channel and they will swim to London.

While it's not a different country....Reggie White chose to go to Green Bay, Wisconsin. I've been to Green Bay - it is a dump. It's all about $$$$ - there are hundreds of players fighting tooth and nail to make it on a NFL roster, if London gets a team, players will sign. A big marquee free agent might not sign immediately, but given time, it will happen. Plus due to all the international travel involved - players will be stateside half of the season as it is...

Perhaps but GB is also a place to go where you can win titles which I like to (probably naively) believe is why Reggie went to GB. London is not going to be that place initially.

He was already a if star when White switched and nearly all the teams in the league were after him. Doubt Green Bay would offer more than them all. I think it was in his opinion, the best shot to win the SB.

Wembley is actually better built for NFL games than actual football (soccer) games imo.

Will be interesting what SPurs stadium looks like though when complete. Will be shitty going there though (given Wembley stadium is a 10 minute walk for me)

Everyone is still moaning in Seahawks land though, did you watch it?
