Nfl 2008-2009

hang on so the steelers get to attack for this quarter and the other guys defend? and then its vice versa?

No. After scoring you kick the ball to the other team from your own 30yard line, which they can then return.

No, a team has 4 chances (called downs) to move the ball forward a total of 10 yards, their offence against the opositions defence, if they fail its a turnover and the opposition take over. Other turnovers can also happen, if the ball is caught by the opposition when its thrown or retrieved after it's dropped on a running play.

Each time they make it they make the 10 yards, from the point where the ball got to a new target of 10 yards is made and they start again on 1st down, that goes on until the score or they get to within 10 yards of the goal when they have to score or there is a turnover. Most teams punt or kick a field goal if they reach 4th down without making the 10 yards, a punt normally causes a turnover as the opposition will retrieve the ball, a field goal scores 3 points.

Good Q from steelers. Should push for a TD in the 2nd Q, but need to make sure they try to put this one out of sight ASAP, as the cards get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Did he just call a timeout 53 seconds after having a 5 minute break?

Kinel what a game.

Actually once a team takes possession of the ball they then get 4 plays, or "downs" as they're called. They must move the ball 10 yards to reset their downs, thus getting a "first down" or they lose possession.

Depending on where the ball is located on the 4th play or down, the offensive team can either use that play to punt, or drop kick the ball further into the other teams side of the field, creating further distance between that team and the opponents end zone (think touchdown), or they can use the play to try and move the ball the remaining distance left for the first down.

If a team scores either through touchdown, by getting the ball into the end zone for 6 points, or they score a field goal, by kicking the ball through the goal post for 3 points, then as has been pointed out previous, the scoring team then kicks the ball of to the other team to play their offence.

There are also about a million rules and penalties and ignorance that goes along but for the most part it's mind numblingly boring.

I have to admit that although I watch this game a bit, I barely understand what the hell is going on half the time.

Ben needs to control the game now, and calm things down. Get back the 10 point advantage, then the D needs to make a play again.

That was a great drive from the Cardinals, just what they needed to make this game interesting.

However, having put a £20 bet on Steelers 2 months ago, not what I needed.

I got money going too mate. Need to win by 7 or more!

I'm not saying that there aren't some exciting things that happen, it's just that between the 5 minute breaks every other 4 minutes, and all the standing around (45 seconds between each play) it's hard to watch without falling to sleep.

I would enjoy this game if it took half as long to play, and there wasn't so much pomp and nonsense to it. At the moment, I can't help but look at it, and think how it encapsulates everything I hate about sport today. And that includes the commentators who never cease to talk endless streams of uninteresting bullshit

But hey, the half time show is coming soon. And isn't that why everyone watches this, to see the bit where there's no actual sport? Sigh...

I think when you really really get into the game, you dont notice the time going by.

Seeing as Arizona is the underdog, and Kurt Warner is a likeable guy I'm pulling for the Cardinals.

Holding - theres one of the zillion possible infractions.

Exactly. The stoppages are everybody's major criticism when they first get into the game. But they are a part of it, its one of, if not THE most tactical sport in the world and personally, thats why I love it. There are not many sports where it would not matter if every member of the team was athletically gifted, without good coaches, you'll go nowhere.

Well said mate

Although I must admit to having a good old chuckle at the "its so slow!" comments considering the first quarter was the quickest quarter of football I have ever seen - under 30 mins is incredible.

To be fair the Super Bowl has always been more of a spectacle than anything. I'm not saying that normal NFL games aren't boring, just that this one takes it to a whole other level.

The whole spectacle of American Football is just a refelction of how popular it is over there if you ask me. Football in America is bigger than any other sport in any other country. Ive read somewhere very recently that if college football was considered a different sport to professional american football, then college football would be the second most popular sport in America (after professional!).

Lucky with penalties there, steelers realy need to score now with this last drive.

Are you lads in the UK getting the same commentary and commercials? We've got Madden and his turducken over here.

Yup - John Madden, while a great pro, is a god awful co-commentator and has such a mundane voice. I deliberately go against his recommended plays in Madden on the X-Box just because of his voice.

Yes, and we have the option for them instead of our own studio on Sky Sports. But I am sticking with the usual sky sports, I got used to them during the rest of the season!

That's why it can never be as good as actual football for me. The beauty of our game is that you have your tactics, and your game plans and everything else; but the game is totally organic. You need to make decisions on the cuff. And of course the thing American Football lacks - the thrill of the rapid counter attack. On a normal play, we have to wait for the teams to change around...

But I'm enjoying the sport of this, even if I have to wait 10 minutes between plays to actually see it
