Neymar

Is he or Muller even a realistic signing? I'll piggyback him to Manchester from Brazil if that's what it'll take for us to have him.

That'd be better than sitting on our asses and complain whilst City and Chelsea get a superstar.
But not a superstar from Real or Barca. Reminds me of the time when City came into a bit of cash... They tried for everyone but ended up with Robinho, a player who didn't exactly light up La Liga but heh he was a big name. But anyway City and Chelsea will be in the market for the same level of player as us, I don't think they're deluded(naive?) enough to think they'll be able to lure Messi or Neymar. Nowt wrong with being realists.

Precisely. It was only this summer when Mourinho was bemoaning the difficulty of getting truly top tier players to come to the Premier League and complaining that if you want to lure a star player from the likes of Barca, Real or Bayern which the club doesn't want to sell then you might as well give up because those clubs only sell when they want to sell.

It remains to be seen if that arrangement lasts forever, and the power of the 'big three' runs counter to the general increase in quality that the smaller Premier League sides are able to recruit because of improved scouting and the massive TV deal, but there's no shame in admitting that at the moment we're unfortunately probably not in that chosen trio of clubs who can buy the world's superstars and dictate which players come and go with an iron fist.

I can see woody trying, it was confirmed as the thread title says. neymar will always be the 2nd/3rd big fish in the barcelona pond, whereas here he will be THE big fish. He will also get alot of respite from tax trials and santos wanting him banned and other circus that surrounds him. We are arguably more popular than barcelona (Especially in india/china rest of asia) and have a bigger fan base, so i think Brand neymar would be also on his mind.

The scout attending the game has no relation to Neymar, since he's not even in the squad.

Who is Neil Custis? Google seems to suggest he is a Sun reporter, and if its the same one then this is hardly any credible source! Specially of what Neymar is thinking!

Didn't Custis say that in August? And according to the post above, Neymar is not even in the squad for tonight's game. A story out of absolutely nothing.

Imagine needing to scout Neymar to be convinced.

I'd like to be professional scout whose work involves 'scouting' established superstars like Neymar.
It says nowhere we were scouting him, just that we have scouts in that game. I think scouts have information for the most part if the player they are gonna watch will be in the matchday squad or not. Its more likely he is watching one of the youngsters from barcelona who was tipped to start by an agent/advisor. They have some of the academy graduates on the team and plucking one of them might be a good idea.

As for neymar, well Custis broke the story in the summer, it was his exclusive and he got ridiculed badly, but as we found out later it was true. These quotes are from his article in the sun i think. Its more of an update rather than anything. Hope that clears all up.

Fair enough. Faith restored in journalism and scouting in general.

Is he due a new contract at Barca by any chance?

Funny you should say that i read a few articles yesterday they are about offer him a new mammoth contract.

Sounds like something Moyes would do.

Nothing wrong with being thorough, 2-3 years from now after another 10-15 scouting trips Moyes will know for sure whether Ronaldo is the real deal or not.

I'll be shocked if he ends up signing a mega contract at Barca before the end of the season, really really really shocked.

Or maybe I wont.

I don't think scouting is the word just because we're there. Stalking perhaps is a better word. If you want to sign the big players, you have to show them you want them. Drum it into their heads. We might not get him but Perez Madrid model was based on the fact the player was confident it was a possibility. You have to be a little nuts to be these clubs but we're in a more competitive league then they are financially. People said we were despirate (in the press) when we signed Martial...they soon shut up. Not everyones a Di Maria. I think he would be attracted as a spearhead but to be frank Neymar has some bad habits. I'm not sure he has the mentality to stand up week after week. It's easy for him at Barcelona

We shouldn't really sign anyone without having scouts watch them play. You can tell a lot more seeing a player live than you can by watching football on a TV screen.

Not least what the implications for the rest of the side would be from positional, tactical, style of play and general perspectives if he was playing for us.

There's a lot more to scouting than watching the player in question and coming back to the manager and saying 'yeah, he's class'.

Surely signing Neymar (and Muller) is very unrealistic?

No harm in trying I guess, aslong as we don't miss out on other targets chasing a pipedream.

Like said before, Neymar didn't even make the trip to Villanovense.

As for the mentality issues, that's just nonsense. He's been carrying the Brazilian NT for years as a young star and has been showing himself for us with and without Messi.

If we had a front three of Martial, Muller and Neymar we'd (hopefully) despatch teams. It will never happen though but you can't blame the powers that be for trying. We need to start looking at players like Martial who are going to be the next big thing and throwing money at them before other teams do.

Man, what a front three that could be.

Indeed, wasn't there a scouting report from AVB or someone leaked a few years back that showed the absolutely ridiculous detail that goes into these things?

Going through this thread makes you understand how journalists always get away with making a living out of the absolute crap they spew out every transfer window (not even) about United

Don't forget Rooney playing in front of them.

haha do people really think we have any hope in hell of landing Neymar?!?.
Staying at the best club side in the world playing with Messi and Suarez and dismantling most teams with ease and playing brilliant enjoyable football in a lovely country, or move to a cold/wet UK, playing for a shocking Manchester United team that under Van Gaal, play a woefully boring football style and that will mostly only be a top 4 team instead of champions of anything?.

Seems legit

You guys have no ambition.

Yes I'll bet he can't wait to come and sit on the left wing while we play Rooney in the strikers role, and watch his team mates dilly dally for 90 minutes without trying to attack seriously.

The left is where he'd probably play. Martial through the middle.

Neymar always plays off of the left.
