He had a summer job, he’s a regular man of the people.

I know on here you're considered the devil unless you grew up destitute but being the son of a doctor and a pharmacist is hardly Jeff Bezos.

So only billionaires kids count as having a “silver spoon” upbringing to you?

If you think being the son of an immigrant doctor is a silver spoon upbringing, you need to look up what that term actually means. Boris Johnson yes, Rishi Sunak definitely not.

If you think “son of an immigrant doctor” paints a more telling picture than “attended a £46k per year school” then that tells its own story.

I don't know how any rational person could possibly vote for this Tory party (or any of its utterly talentless, morally bankrupt candidates), but I expect Javid to ultimately win the leadership.

Indeed. Educated at one of the most prestigious and most expensive private schools in the entire country, before reading PPE at Oxford, completing an MBA at Stanford and shacking up with a woman who, despite being literally worth more than the Queen, nevertheless insists on tax avoidance.

A working class hero.

In the light of Tory MPs being worried that whoever they put in front of the party as the run-off choices might be too left wing, this has an interesting analysis on MPs v members v voters around broad left and right categories on social and economic issues. OK, admittedly it may only interest me because it aligns with what I've seen/heard from those red wall voters etc myself.

Broadly Tory voters are to the left of their MPs on the economy but to their right on social issues. The research was done in 2019/20. It would be interesting how much of it holds true. It certainly aligns with Boris attempting to force the debate onto culture wars and big talk about levelling up, as a populist he probably does pay attention to survey stuff.

Think I mentioned on here before, but two civil servant friends previously independently told me that Truss is the thickest minister they have ever had the misfortune of dealing with (to be fair, neither of them have worked directly with Priti Patel). Anyway, Truss is allegedly dumb as a post, unable to grasp even basic briefings and trails multiple horror stories of meetings wrecked by her stupidity or lack of understanding. It would be quite something to see her floundering around as PM.

I have heard the phrase pound shop thatcher from some of those unfortunate enough to have had to endure her ramblings

That said I am not sure she can be that bad given she managed to get from a comprehensive school to read PPE at Oxford (where she was actually head of the student lib dems)
Qualified as a management accountant, worked in a commercial role for shell and as economics director at cable and wireless before joining the reform think tank as deputy director

Based on that I think there may be thicker ministers but perhaps few with so much more ambition than talent and a propensity to pursue things based solely on whats best for her

Perhaps she is more female boris than poundshop thatcher

Wow worse than Nadine??!

Am I right in thinking the most "moderate" of the current runners is Tugendhat?

The Tory paid up membership notoriously skew further to to the right on the spectrum, so I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with somebody vacuous like Truss. The membership still appear to back Boris and blame everybody but him (the media, backstabbers, etc). It might look stupid at first if Truss does try pitch herself as a 2nd Boris, but she will know that she only has to appeal to a small fraction of the electorate to become the next Tory leader - and that fraction love Boris.

Possibly - perhaps Hunt (at least in terms of Brexit and assuming he runs)
Liz truss was of course a lib dem... but has been on a trajectory to to the right ever since?

I am not convinced truss has the MP votes to get to the final two but i do think her thatcher impression would go down well if she could get there (think she will ultimatley back wallace if she's promised treasury ... which is a horrifically frightening prospect)
Mordaunt I think would also do well on hustings and seems a higher calibre candidate but again I'm not sure she has the MP votes
I think Javid and Sunak will team up with one of them making the final two (probably Javid) and the other at treasury

I think the middle aged white man wins in the run off ... which means Truss at treasury :nervous:

No doubt an unpopular choice, but Gove is a very clever boy who speaks very well and knows how to build an argument.

Having someone with an actual brain in charge of a country is stretching it a bit these days, though.

Also, he doesn't actually want it, which is also an intelligent take. Much like a football manager, you come in with a fanfare, inevitably feck up, sooner or later and then get thrown out on your ear.

I'd question the sanity of anyone that wanted to pitch themselves as "the female Boris Johnson".
She even acts like him in interviews. There's just nothing genuine about her at all.

Ready4Rishi combined with the still from that video gives it a very ominous vibe.

Ready or not here he comes

intelligent Tories is a scary thought

imagine the damage they could do

Can there be any candidates from the crowd he kicked out of the party a couple of years back? There seemed to be some competence and sanity from that crowd.
