For people dreading the rebuilding after Conte's 2 seasons - what would you call it when you have a squad where your first choice selection includes a 39 year old star striker, a 36 year old star backup striker, 30 and 29 year old creative midfielders, a 33 year old keeper, and two 30 year old CBs?

He could just be speculating but if it’s true, perhaps the “stay of execution” is due to the hierarchy being unwilling to hire Conte rather than any actual intention to give Ole another chance.
It does seem like the club are not willing to go with Conte. I think if the Manager of their choosing was available now, they'd have relieved Ole of his duties.

Eh? Potter's sides play great football. They had the best defensive record in the league also before they played City.
Even if I disagree with that conclusion, you still fire him and hire somebody else.
There are people better placed than me to conclude whether the concerns around Conte are valid or not, but this would be history repeating itself no?
Potter got my vote in the poll. I think he's as interesting a candidate as Ten Hag. Both come with the same questions on handling the players, but I think his CV is quietly very impressive. He's the definition of a manager deserving a chance at the top level, exactly the type of manager we have bemoaned missing out on over the years.
I would be very surprised if we brought in Potter, but I have to say i'm a bit of a convert with him.

Potter plays much the same formation as Conte, No? 3-5-2?
He plays a similar formation but a different style. Potter's style is closer to Guardiola and he looks a interesting prospect.

Obvious. Conte wouldn't be a lackey. He would also probably want his own staff. And I think Carrick and McKenna are basically club backed mates. I like Graham, I really do, but this is a big step up for him in a very bad time for us. We don't have a luxury like Bayern to play in a one man's league, we really need to get top 4 this season.
I rate Potter highly and think he will manage England at some point in the future. For Man Utd at this present time though? Not sure.

It would be bizarre timing to leave now. He's not impressed that much but they are top of their CL group and are comfortably top of Ligue 1. Even if winning Ligue 1 at PSG isn't that big of an achievement, for a man with virtually no silverware to his name it would be mad to give that up now.
What is significant in all of this is how well Maguire, Shaw and even Lingaard and Rashford play for England. It can be no coincidence that Gareth Southgate, who is far more intelligent and a much better coach can get the best out of these United players.
To me, that speaks volumes about the importance of good quality coaching and good quality tactics.

Whoever we pick, longevity needs to be secondary to style of play.
We're never going to get back to having a manager for 5, 6, 7 years - we just need to ensure that every appointment we make is a forward step or a continuation of the kind of football we want to deliver.
Conte doesn't tick either the longevity or style of play box. He may guarantee a trophy but so did Jose and look how that turned out, the Europa & the League Cup were hardly worth the damage.
The sensible solution barring a stylish, elite manager (not available) seems to be an interim who plays attacking football, it just doesn't seem there is anyone who fits that description right now.

I've supported United 30 years but if we go with Southgate I think I might have to find another sport.
