Next Draft - Ideas and Discussions

I am going to be really busy over the next few weeks so it will have to be a no unfortunately.

thinking of creating a draft around WW2, no idea how it would look yet but just wanted to see if people would be interested in that? Plenty of potential avenues to go so could lead to a fresh player pool.

I wouldn't be interested but I reckon if you want to do a really old draft you could do one just on those players without a full game. If that happens we need to call it the Dinosaur Draft and tag Golden Blunder.

you got it wrong, it would be a normal draft but criterias would be based around WW2......similar to how we had Seinfeld and Only Fools and Horses Draft.

I get you now. Whether I would be interested would depend on how research intensive it is likely to be. Really busy at work at the moment.

Heaven vs Hell

  1. Players must be dead
  2. Clear discussion about whether player should play for Heaven or Hell
  3. The more "saintly" or "evil" a player is the more skill he has on the pitch, because skill doesn't matter when you're dead. It's just about whether God or Satan supports you enough

Nazi Draft is progressing nicely, just wanted to ask if you guys prefer a regular draft or shall i put in few random surprises. Obviously its more fun but not always the fairest so some dont like it.....

New random draft idea: the natural blonde and ginger draft.

All players must be naturally blonde or naturally ginger.

Most of the top players that immediately come to mind have dark hair so this might create an eclectic selection of players which will be a bit different than normal.

yeah, it would be a proper mess to determine whats blond/ginger and whats not.....i mean we struggled with moustache criteria!

Yeah, I suppose that would make it difficult. By natural blonde we could though have said the colour they typically have is blonde to avoid occasional dyed hair moments. The biggest issue would be where does blonde stop and brown start.

Comes to mind. Just to reward the Draft host for taking her time, to set-up and keep things running smooth. Maybe by allowing host to pick her opponents until Semi Final stage. This kinda also encourage people to host more Drafts in the future.

How is that, folks?

time for a free all-time draft? been years since we done one + considering we struggling as feck to get numbers, maybe this is the easiest way back?

All time auction could be good. It would allow the real GOATs to go for crazy money reflecting their draft pull.

Did we ever settle on a good auction mechanic that prevented drafters from just waiting and picking up bargains?

I've been thinking about good players who don't see much draft action and how we could push them into the limelight by combining a couple of concepts into a Mavericks and Liabilities Draft.
  • Mavericks - you are allocated a maverick and must build your attack around that player. Voting to include an assessment on how well you've built a team around your maverick. (Typical example of a Maverick could be Cantona)
  • Liabilities - you are allocated a classic draft liability and must both build around their strengths and minimise their weaknesses. Voters asked to consider how well you've done that. (Typical liability could be Ramos).
The idea here is that many of the great mavericks are regularly overlooked, usually because of the depth in quality in their more central attacking positions, and also because they had some flaws either in character or in trophy cabinet compared to the glittering CVs of the GOATs. In the same vein, there is a group of players who are almost suicidal picks because, while they had some impressive strengths, they could cost their team with their style of play and, generally, drafters give them a wide berth. So with both the Mavericks and the Liabilities the best way for them to see some draft action, is to force people to, not only use them, but build their teams around them.

Other than that, I'm not precious on the format, but I think it would make sense to be a fairly standard snake draft to allow some team-building, with the option of a small block list so the Maverick and Liability are not completely overshadowed by the quality around them. Another option could be to nominate your own maverick, within reason, if there was a player who you really wanted to build a homage towards.

Thoughts?

lovely, we had something similar before where we allocated 16 star players

That would be interesting Gio but we would need to be crystal clear on the voting criteria. Are you thinking of a Liabilities and Mavericks draft as a single draft or as separate ones?

As for the all-time auction draft idea, we could lift the format from this old one which seemed to work well.

The only issue with the star player draft was that it was hard to keep it fresh through the rounds, so by combining the concepts it would keep it more interesting.

That Cantona's example gave this idea. United + rest of the world draft. Every team must have 5 of current United players playing, then adding 6 others. We can add some restrictions on those 6.

Sounds good.

Maverick idea list:

Cantona
Hagi
Socrates
Riquleme
Bochini
Aimar
Recoba
Le Tissier
Valeron
Raul?
Francescoli
Albert
Del Piero
Savićević

Liabilities list ideas:

Ramos
Koeman
Vidic?

Roquelme and Bochini are more underrated rather than a maverick. My suggestion is to have mavericks who are tactically interesting to build with.

Zlatan, Bergkamp, Pirlo

Yeah, Zlatan, Bergrkamp and Pirlo are decent shots. Heck let's add Didi too. We just need to make sure the sides aren't too unbalanced.
