Newcastle United 24/25 - Eddie Howe Sack Watch

I'd worry Howe is in Ineos' radar should we remove EtH.

Thus far, they've avoided 'sideways' appointments but a sacked Howe would not require any expensive compensatory action on our part.

If EtH goes, obviously, he'll need replacing.

Think he and Cashworth (see what I did there) are not on good terms, so hopefully it will never happen.

It's the 'I'm not here to talk about human rights, just football' interview he did a few years ago. Preening, gurning, ugly.

Sad Bruce didn't call it out, too, like they were going to hire him full-time.

99.99% it won't happen and yeah I agree with you about Howe's cowardly comments

I must admit I'm curious as to why Howe doesn't seem to be subject to the same scrutiny (from both media and fans) that Ten Hag, given that their trajectories over the last 3 seasons appear startlingly similar.

Because we're a far bigger club than they are.

Past two seasons he's had a bit of a meh transfer window in comparison to the backing Ten Hag has had.

Another home defeat which leaves them just 2 points above a Man Utd side thats having its one of its worst ever Premier League season's, Eddie should really be doing better given the money he has spent.

They’re crap. They’ve also had multiple positive results in games in which they were clearly second best (Southampton, Bournemouth…I think Arsenal too). Should be even lower in the table.

It’s a a wee club in the north-east that no one cares about. They peaked, in terms of interest from the press and neutrals, not in terms of anything positive, in the Mike Ashley years.

The lack of criticism he gets from the English media is a bit of head scratcher, is it because they see him as a future England manager and don't want to talk him down now? Newcastle this season should be taking advantage with no distraction of European football

Howe off the back finishing bottom in their Champions league group last season and finishing the Premier league season in 7th has to be on tightrope with the wealthy Newcastle owners

Definitely something in them not being such a high profile club.

Out of curiosity, where we do we actually think they should be given their outlay? Feeling like an apologist here of sorts, bearing in mind everything.

Where they were when he took over and that this past summer there seemed to be very little to spend. FFP? That goalie from Forest / Elliot Anderson deal to them was surely about that? Your most recent window is always going to be the most impactful.

Anyway, spend by total outlay and then net according to transfermarkt since 21/22 is below. We can knock of £25m/30m Euro for the Joe Willock transfer under the previous ownership in summer of 21/22. There was no transfer income that summer. Puts their outgoings at 502m Euros since Howe came in, 8th behind Vila. Net would be 367m, still 5th.

As they were shit with a load of bad players when he arrived, do we expect them to be 5th? That's got be too high, but how much worse is ok? Don't expect Liverpool to be as low as 9th in the table, City 16th which is where they'd be on a net spend metric over the same timeframe.

Got to place those 2 above them plus the others that outspent them while starting from a better place, at least in my opinion. 7th? Perhaps what Villa have been doing makes 8th par? Got to be somewhere around there.

Crap result tonight no doubt, certainly needs criticisng for that and a number of their performances have been poor as has already been said.

Yeah as much as I enjoy them struggling I think some are being quite dishonest about their spending and expectations. They weren't able to do anything this summer. It's why they're backing City so hard against the league.

With no European football, they should be performing better. If the owners’ wish to fire a shot across Howe’s bow they could fire his nephew.

I dont get why he needs to be criticized.

Newcaslte are where they really belong.. mid table if that. They overachieved once finishing in the top 4 and people got carried away as to that is their level.

They should definitely be a top 8 side and pushing for the CL/EL spots. That's the level they are.

He set a high bar coming 4th and running us close for 3rd. If he isn't looking like getting Europa at the minimum I reckon they may choose to part ways.

Exactly, for some reason fans think they should be challenging top 4, he overachieved in his first full season. It was more because fans were expecting a CItyesque rise.

However; City cooked every book possible in order to do so when the rules were not as stringent, Newcastle are struggling in that respect.

Since his appointment 3 years ago Eddie has spent €503m on new players so should be doing better a lot better than he currently is at the club, he has won nothing and despite having no European Football they are still only 10th in the league only 2 points above us and only 9 above the relegation zone.

He got very unlucky with Botman and Tonali, but I can’t understand why they have never tried to buy a right sided attacker.

If money was so tight, Barnes was the wrong buy. Their team is unbalanced.

Yes it's striking how he doesn't want to start with Barnes because him and Gordon play the same position and then brings him on to save him at halftime every other week. Minteh could have been that right winger perhaps, but they had to sell for PSR reasons.

He has Liverpool next. If he loses is it the end of the road for him or will he be given time to change things?

Startling how blunt they’ve become in attack. Scored so many last year even with injuries. Wonder if the team has just come to the end of its cycle.
Bruno looks a shadow of his former self. Livramento isn’t anywhere near as productive as Trippier and Gordon is off it.

Hopefully it all comes together Wednesday though …

Feels like his tactics were mostly just to overwhelm the opposition with their running, but maybe he's burnt them out now.

Howe has them punching at a decent level. Recruitment has been poor recently; they’ve needed a right winger for about three years now.

Weird how they have fallen off so much, there were talks about that midfield being one of the better ones in the PL with Tonali and Bruno.

Good to see Newcastle struggle after their trophy of beating United last season.

Bruno G is the most overrated rated player in the league, never controls a game, never impacts a game other than mere fleeting moments and is permanently giving away stupid free kicks.
Newcastle are weak at the back and midfield, take Isak out of that team and they are absolutely average.

They overachieved getting 4th in 22/23. They did that because they signed all of Pope, Trippier, Dan Burn, Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Isak in 2022 and all those signings worked in that period.

Haven't come close to a transfer period like that since and some of those signings like Burn and Trippier reached their limit.

Their performances generally aren't great which is a problem so perhaps end of the season we'll see a parting of ways as doubt they'll do much in January.

Agreed. I remember seeing a few comments on here a year ago saying that we'd be better off if we replaced our Bruno with their Bruno. I didn't get it. He's a nothing player who's a bit of a hothead.

Hard to keep the players hungry after that

True, they won their biggest game of the season. Then spent end of last season talking about how Newcastle are doing so well to keep Ashworth on gardening leave and forgot they have to actually make moves in the window.

They started to compare against United but I am glad they have found their place now.

They're on the same points as Villa, showing how difficult is to replicate a 4th placed finish.

Newcastle and Villa are actually only 4 points off top 4 despite being 11th and 12th. Meanwhile there's a 7 point gap between 13th and 15th.

It's a weird table so far, there's 5-6 teams who are clearly so much worse than everyone else and it's causing 4th -13th to be incredibly bunched up. A couple of wins in a row and you can go up many many places. It's too early to draw conclusions about teams in that bunch, who knows where they will finish.

Yep, any club with 3/4 wins and you can go 7 places higher in the table.

This is why I think United need to go on a 5/6 game winning run, where we beat Arsenal or City and Forest. That will really kick start our season.

I know Carragher views Gordon as one of the best attackers in the league but he looks nothing special at all, him and Barnes are largely the same level to me

Probably better than any of our centre midfielders, to be fair. I think he had something like 15 goal contributions in the league as a CM last season as well.

Last season playing CL and having so many injuries (similar to us I believe) + Tonali being suspended really hurt them. They're not looking great this season either but only 4 points behind Brighton who are in 4th place so Howe is surely safe for now. No European football this season though so if they don't improve can see club and Howe parting ways in May.

Howe's and ten Hag's tenures are bit similar but important to remember Newcastle had a GD of +23 last season. We had -1. Several indicators showed Newcastle could've finished higher than 7th while several indicators showed we should've finished even below that already bad 8th position.
