What's the chances of Jassim coming back in on this ? If a new stadium is built , which given the acreage available to club , it would be a sin not to, it will need to be the best in the world with no close rivals. I'm all for nostalgia but what happened all the dudes that moaned about leaving Newton Heath.
Didn’t they go and form FC United? :wenger:

I'd tolerate a new stadium if it was in the same location and not based on other stadium's design

would love a single tier stretford end with a prominent standing section

all talk of a 'Northern Wembley' is disappointing. not been to actual Wembley, but nine tenths of people I speak to confirm it is a soulless dome with minimal atmosphere. local area includes investment in Nachos, Carluccios and chain pubs.

Hardly the world class food poisoning we already serve, is it?
Think people are taking the Wembley of the North too literally. He will mean size wise not a carbon copy. He will want the area to become a whole day experience for the fans with great facilities and views in the stadium.

Isn't that just what most commercialised areas in London are like anyway?

Spot on. I'd go far as to say there's nothing wrong with Old Trafford's actual design and it's still a far better design than most of the new builds.

The issue is that it hasn't been well looked after.

Try sitting in North tier 3, because of the stupid roof you can't see most of the stadium, or hear it, and they can't see you. Actually the acoustics are completely crap everywhere, crowd noise just gets lost in the roofs somehow. Some of the drinking/eating/toileting areas under the stands are so packed it's not worth getting up for. They could sell way more with more space, before, after, and at half-time.

Tier 3 North is just about the worst part of the ground to watch a match from to be fair.

What does 'wouldn't necessarily' mean? I want an example of a modern state of the art stadium with a greater capacity than we have now that would fit.

Ok I'm being totally lazy in not researching it properly myself but in my defence it's the caf that's made me this way. Pick any subject under the sun from medicine to artificial intelligence to archaeology and you can bet several people will come on that genuinely know their stuff and I read their opinions in awe. Football stadiums, not a chance, we seem to know feck-all about them.

I take exception to that.

Sir Jim says preference is a new stadium that could be build beside Old Trafford

Good man. Sentiment is weakness. United only lose part of its spirit if fans say it does, but history ain’t in the bricks and mortar. Build a brand new stadium that tells the world we are the biggest and best and we will be successful into the future.

They are and can't be fixed without demolishing the entire stand and rebuilding it, due to how the concrete terraces are constructed.
If you think they are bad now you should have seen the old Stretty seats, they were cramped for kids never mind adults!

I have been going to OT since 1973 and will be sad to see the old place go but this is 100% the correct way of thinking.Sir Matt said that Manchester United should always be the best an he was forward thinking by taking us into Europe etc.so if we want to follow his philosophy then let’s move forward and be the best.
Don’t forget 75% of OT has been built since 1992 and only the south stand remains from my first game.
I would build a new world class 90000 seater at the back of the stretford end then once opened demolish all but the south stand which could be converted into a museum(built around the old tunnel)plus offices, megastore, bars etc etc.we could close the front of the stand off with a wall to achieve this(like the old Highbury).

keep tradition but move forward.

And that’s from an older red.

Interesting fact about the 1992 construction. It becomes a similar argument to Triggers’ broom in that case.

I voted for revamping Old Trafford but to be honest I don't hate the idea of a new stadium. My only hope would be to keep some of the nostalgic things about Old Trafford like the holy trinity statue and a Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.

Old Trafford is a sacred piece of land. It should be protected. It's an emphatic no to a new stadium. Just extend the existing stadium. Please.

Almost the whole stadium has been changed over the years. It's a great place but to grow we need a new stadium.
Honestly, this is so ingrained in some peoples' minds they are not going to change their mind. I agree though, it holds us back from progressing as a club.

It‘s far too cramped and out of date. The only way forward is a new stadium.

At the time I was gutted when the stretford end was demolished(I had watched some great players from that old stand)and when the floodlight towers where taken down(I always liked the look of them walking to the ground)because both where traditional at the time but looking back they were the right decisions to move the club forward.

I was at the game where they used the new style lights for the first time, I remember thinking they were never gonna be light enough, shows how much I knew but I don't think I was alone in that notion

Time for new. Change is good.
Agree with this. Will be a tough pill to swallow but it's logical to rebuild a new one especially if we can do it across the road. We can also continue to play at OT, no impact on ticket sales, state of the art building, increased capacity (I'd love to see us reach 100k but I think 90k is more likely), cheaper to build new than to reconstruct. What we do now will last for another 100 years and I'm sure the maintenance will be of better quality.

My personal 1st choice have always been a "stand by stand" rebuild of Old Trafford, starting with the south stand. (Real Madrid and Barcelona style rebuild is what I prefer).

I know it's been mentioned many times that all the stands have been rebuilt many times, so to me knocking down stands to rebuild again is not a big problem.

To me the most "sacred/hallow/spiritual" part of OT is actually the pitch, it's where many generations of great players have played on, Sir Matt to Sir Alex eras, great goals scored, great moments happened.

And I also realise the physical pitch itself has also been re-laid multiple times, but afaik the location/position of the pitch has been the same since the beginning? So for me keeping the pitch where it is the most important.

If we can't do a stand by stand rebuild, (due to time and costs/disruptions) then my 2nd choice would be to keep the OT pitch, then reduce the size of the stands (keeping the most historic South Stand largely as it is with the Munich tunnel etc, the most historic part is the old players entrance tunnel I think), and downsize OT to maybe a 25000 seater stadium, to be used by the United Woman's and Youth teams. I think that would be great for promoting Women and Youth football.

Then after reducing the footprint of OT, hopefully there is enough space to build a "state of the art" 100,000 stadium. Why 100k? well for me it's "go big or go home", if we're going all the trouble of building a new stadium, might as well go big and have a stadium that's going to last us 50+ years before any major works needs to done again, also having the bragging rights as the largest stadium in the UK. Also the seats that's right at the top might not have the best views, so those can be made significantly cheaper for younger fans or general admission, in order to attract the next generation of fans.

But looking at all the pics/maps used in various reports on news websites, even with a reduced size OT, they all overlay the new stadium onto the Freight Terminal, that might be a problem, as I don't think the club owns it, and extra costs and disruptions having to purchase it.

I can understand what SJR is saying about OT. A very good friend of mine has been to Tottenham new stadium and he tells me how fantastic it is.

But in the event that a new stadium is built on the land, where would United play while it is being built.
Or would OT still be able to be used. Pardon my ignorance.

As fare as I can see there is room to build a new stadium whilst using all the existing one only if the new is no bigger than what we have now.

However, if only three quarters of the existing stadium is used, ie minus the Stretty, and if a slice of the yards is negotiated, then there would be room for a substantially larger one to built, at 90 degrees to the present, as @matherto first pointed out.

I have no qualifications in this whatsoever mind, just looking at the map.

All down to money for me and what provides the best for the long term future of the club. 90k capacity sounds about right. Putting the fans first. Naming rights will probably cause a huge rammy but could see it happening to help finance.

That's the $64, 000 dollar question, I always thought we would still be able to retain OT whilst a new stadium was being built

Now I'm not so sure, if you look at Spur's stadium and OT on Google Maps, make sure the scale is the same for both, OT has a fraction of the footprint of the new Spurs stadium, obviously they won't be the same but OT we'd hope would about a third bigger capacity wise and it's hard to see where it would fit with OT is still in place if it has anything like the Spur footprint
