New Left Back

I want Shaw to remain first choice but feck me he picks up a lot of yellow cards. We need to be prepared for suspensions/injuries. We didn't cope at all with his absence, playing wingers and centrebacks in his place.

We could do with some LB depth. Whether that'd be from the academy or transferred I don't know, but I don't think it should be a priority.

It absolutely shouldn't, like you say Shaw has been generally very good this season, but i'd like to think we are continually scouting for players with potential across all positions. If Shaw gets injured or suspended, I'd hope we don't have to rely on Young ever again.

Andy Robertson cost liverpool £7m, low-risk value is out there.

yes and if we are being honest he's not in the same class as Evra or Irwin - that should be the standard - obviously not a priority this Summer mind you

Yep though his first proper season with us has been promising so he could reach those heights in a few years, if he continues to work hard on his development. He's only 23 after all.

Focus on filling the glaring holes in our squad, then we can think about buying the best to turn a top 4 squad to a title winning squad. Instead we seem to want to try and turn a 5th-6th team to a title winning team in one window without the planning or patience to build the foundations.

He's picked up his career again. He stalled for a few years but he's doing well and has had the season of his career. If he stalls again maybe we need to replace him bit I don't know why its being discussed now, he's one of the last positions we need to question.

Lee O’Connor is a hell of a prospect.
Hopefully he is part of the summer tour and gets chances next season. Would be in line with Ole's comments on United and youth players as key to the composition of the first-team squad.

I think a new LB can wait till Jan or next summer
certainly next summer unless we saw a real prospect at an affordable price or an opportunity presented itself

in theory if Sessegnon for example was available cut-price with Fulham's relegation it might be worth getting in early

not sure if he is even good enough though - just know he was very highly rated coming into this season - that Fulham defence is amongst the worst I've ever seen

He’s been one of our best players this year. Not amazing but solid and almost like a new signing. LB cover is a glaring hole in the 22 though. I’d like someone who can push shaw all the way because he does seem like the type who may become complacent again over time. I don’t think Tierney would cost the world but being Irish I’d love it if o’connor Was good enough to be that guy. We have much more pressing issues to address in the squad currently anyway. RW, CM who can dictate and tackle, CB who can pass under pressure and a RB are the bare minimum and that’s before you look at the fact our forwards aren’t doing the business at all and half the team want to leave or earn absolute top bracket wages and we struggling to make top 4. Crikey.

I love my big cuddly Luke and all but I would love to sign Digne.
He would be a solid signing, good for competition as well.
Shaw needs to pull his finger and work for this club, he's been getting a free ride. He's not a kid anymore, inconsistency is not an excuse for him.

He still needs to reach Evra levels. He's got a long way to go yet.

LB depth wouldn't be my priority by any stretch given the amount of first-team players we need. However, it would also be good to have. As some have said above, if we're able to promote someone like O'Connor or get in a Sessegnon-type signing for a cut-price then I'm all for it. I don't think Luke needs replacing though - if anything, it would perhaps would ideal to have an attacking full-back to compensate Luke being predominantly defensive (same on the right - Dalot is attacking so someone a la AWB would be a good fit).

Sessegnon would be a smart purchase imo, someone we can use when we need an attacking outlet on the left if we're chasing a game and want to risk it. Shaw is a solid left back but he's not exactly a creative fullback, certainly his main weakness is the final third.

We could do with a young prospect, although I can imagine we'll go into next season with our options as:

Shaw
Right back
Dalot
Young

Thankfully, both Young and Dalot can play on both sides, although I prefer Young on the left and Dalot on the right.

He needs genuine natural competition regardless. Not make shift back up

Ferland Mendy
Kieran Tierney
Ben Chilwell

Tierney is the only one that would not cost £50m+.
All of them are far better than Shaw going forward, passing, crossing etc, but not as good defensively.
Do not know if Tierneys hip-injury has caused him to drop a level or two, and now he got a pelvic injury that might need an operation.

I just don´t see a top LB in Shaw. I find it really strange that people think he is really good.
Look at the goal Berando Silva scored. He left him acres of space on the left foot to shoot instead of showing him the outside.
Plus he just looked out of breath, I don´t care what anyone says he isn´t in top shape at all. He looks well padded.

We could certainly do with a LB challenging Shaw for the spot, but there other positions that we need to address before we address the LB position.
Until then I guess Shaw will have time to get in shape and grab the position with both hands.

You are not wrong, but he got a £160k+ per week contract this season, so it is unlikely that we will bring in another player to be the first option.

I just want FBs who have courage and cause genuine problems down the channels. This is part of how poorly we are run as a club. Shaw is on 160k as is Rojo. Sanzhez 350k plus. Jones and Smalling on similar. we reward mediocrity rather than getting rid

Absolutely.. We are paying mediocre players top dollar and letting them stay well beyond their time.
I get why we gave Shaw a new contract, there is still good time for him to become a good LB but I don´t see it in him, he looks like he is well happy with his status and performances.

Don't see us getting one this window.

We'll buy a right back, and Dalot can cover both, Tuanzebe can cover RB too.

There was a swedish journalist, previously extremely critical of OGS appointment, stated that it would be an insult to a child to say that MUFC is governed like it was a child as a CEO.

Looking back at just a page ago of people defending Young and Valencia

Don’t really see anyone who would be a massive improvement on Shaw if at all but I do think You g will be kept as back up and Dalot will also be back up as well as us bringing in a RB. I’ll be surprised if we don’t bring in Bissaka for RB. The real problem area of the team. Or we’ll probably equal with midfield.

Improvement on Shaw: Chilwell, Farland Mendy, Tierney. Unless you value defensive abilities the highest, then i agree that Shaw is good enough.

We need a new right back. Dalot isn't ready to be a starter yet but he can provide cover for both sides. Will get plenty of minutes to develop that way. Then as fourth choice we have either Young or a youth player (O'Connor/Laird).

Parallels with Wengers management at Arsenal in his later years and look where it’s gotten them....

Shaw needs competition. I think there are plenty of good to very good LBs floating around, we should snap one up soon for a decent price. Digne and Chillwell in the PL, Tierney at Celtic, and then looking at the European leagues the likes of Telles, Halstenberg, Roussillon, Tagliafico, Gaya and Mendy would offer plenty of competition if not surpass him after a while. Most of them had very good seasons and are better offensively than Shaw. I think sooner or later we need to add another specialist LB to the squad.

Didn't Williams already get called up to the senior squad for a game? Guess we might see him on the preseason tour, and perhaps Dalot there (though not impressed by him on the left so far).

would love a new left back but it's pretty far down our list of immediate concerns right now. Definitely much bigger priorities to address first.

We won't buy a new LB this summer. New RB to go along with Shaw, Dalot and Young plus maybe Mitchell.

Considering what he has had in front of him and to the side of him this season it's no surprise he has picked up so many cards and at times looked vulnerable. The whole season has been generally decent from him on an individual basis. Hopefully with some better defenders next to him and some sustained attacking football by our team we can see him develop more both defensively and offensively.

I don't think LB is going to be a priority for Utd this summer - Shaw has done ok this season and is a decent player - nothing special though but nowhere near the top of the list of problems.
