New Jose Interview with Telegraph

I'm almost sure that way before joining United, Mourinho mentioned that the appeal of Manchester United was the larger role of the manager. Maybe I imagined though?

He's cleverly using the poor structure and management of the club to paint a picture of himself as hard done by during his time here when in fact, his very appointment was a by-product of that same mismanagement. A well run Manchester United doesn't ever hire Jose Mourinho - he was never, ever the right fit.

Did he mention that he wanted Godin and Boateng

It said bettered, not equalled
Well okay technically you’re correct

But it would be like me doing a hole in one and then saying “nobody in golf history has bettered my hole in one” - it’s deliberately misleading

This is just plain wrong. He's one of the best LBs in the league when he's on form. The issue is obviously the latter part, with his injury record.
It's always the same when Shaw is injured. People seem to forget how good he actually is, and starts to undervalue him. It's weird, usually it's the other way around with injured players - people start thinking of them as better than they are and the solution to all our problems.

I like Jose, didn't work at Spurs(knew it wouldn't) but that's more on the club than him. If you're going to hire him then you need to go all in. You know he's going to want a team with an average age of 29, you know that's going to require big wages and not much in the way of resale value, you know the football isn't going to be barnstorming. When you start compromising on these then there's no point in him being there. Whether he still could actually win even with everything his way remains to be seen but I like to see different styles in football so wouldn't mind seeing him back in the PL.

Shaw's issue is not even fitness. His talent is off the charts and should be the best LB in the world. He doesn't want it badly enough though.

He has much much more talent than Robertson for instance. But Robertson is an absolute warrior and maximizes his talent every minute.

Martial has incredible talent too. But injuries destroyed him and he's always been a lazy player.

Rashford can excel at one style of play. He's not that talented. He thinks he's a superstar and his attitude has gotten worse and worse.

We always give the managers wrong players unfortunately. He wasn't backed with right players .

He was past it anyway. We would still have lingered around 3-5 which we are doing it anyways

He infamously fell out with Woodward over Maguire, im guessing was vetoed because he had already been given Bailly and Lindelof

You'd have no sympathy for him if not for the fact United went and massively overpaid for Maguire a year later and made him captain.

So, he lacks some ability to guide a team correctly then, even if he builds the team.
Yes, it's why I think managers often come in and do better but in reality have they done that much better? Since Conte at Chelsea nobody has really put him to shame, even de Rossi now is probably enjoying a honeymoon period but will it last?

If I remember correctly he wasn't even vetoed. United were reportedly in talks with Leicester, they simply didn't agree on a fee. Then the lad decided to extend his contract in September.

I think Mourinho is always guilty of a bit of revisionism, but there might be an element of truth to some things. For example, Ten Hag was backed to implement his authority and get rid of Ronaldo, remove the captaincy from Maguire, outcast Sancho. Part of the problem is Mourinhos, as his past means there's an air of potential toxicity around him always, but there is definitely no secret that he wanted rid of Martial and Shaw, and Rashford too didnt seem particularly rated by him. Initially we at least an air of authority under him on the pitch, with Ibrahimovic very much being in his mould.

These wouldnt have been revelatory signings but if we're going back to Mourinho's time, lets say the summer of 2017, after his first season. That's almost 7 years ago. It is quite incredible that Martial is still here, and while Shaw is in my opinion a brilliant player, we wouldnt have crumbled without him. The players we were linked with at that time, namely Perisic and Willian:

Perisic went to Inter in summer of 2017. He played 254 games in the next 6 seasons, with Inter, Bayern and Spurs, by which point he was around 33. He also scored 44 goals in that time, played and scored in a world cup final, won 2 domestic leagues and a champions league. He is a consumate professional and a consistent performer, and if I remember rightly almost the entire united fanbase turned their nose up in scorn at the very idea of signing him.

Willian was at Chelsea in summer 2017. He was pretty much ever present, never injured for the next 3 seasons at chelsea, playing 158 times in three seasons (!) and scoring 32. Years later, after a stint in brazil, he still plays PL football week in week out though of course would likely have been moved on from united in that time.

If we compare those 2 players, to shaw and martial in that time - Mourinho is obviously right. There does seem in retrospect to have been a culture under mourinho where he was treated with a certain suspicion, and he should have been backed to bring in these 2 continually fit, experienced model professionals in particular.

From the board’s perspective, they had backed him with a few “old” players with no resale value and it didnt work. How can a guy we allowed to break the world record fee complain about being backed? By the way we went on to pay about the same for Lukaku the following summer. Never mind the unreal amount of money we paid for Sanchez.

Jose loves himself a bit of Jose. Still hasn't had a job since Inter where someone else hasn't come in and immediately done as well or better.

De Rossi is already showing him up at Roma.

He built the Roma team and won them a European trophy, he is hardly being shown up. They are a single place above where they finished last season

Surprised it took him this long , having recently been dismissed by Roma, to get back into the comfort of recounting, once again, his time at United.

Easy pay cheque for him really and, obviously, United , win or lose, always gains publicity.

Jose can fukk off. He created a toxic atmosphere and his tactics were shit.

It's all about Jose and no one else, all the time. As Everton fans once brilliantly stated of Liverpool but it's perfectly appropriate here:

Outraged by everything; ashamed of nothing

A 3rd tier trophy which did not exist when Jose last was relevant.

Point is moot, where Roma were coming from its not a true statement to say De Rossi is showing him up.
Jose wasn't great here, but at the end of the day every manager has said more or less the same thing about the club, heck LVG even said it before ETH was appointed and we all heckled him.
The new owner SJR has also said exactly the same thing too and is at least looking at addressing it which is good

Players at the club during Mourinho's time (in order of appearance) who are still here:
  • ShawMaybe. Wasn't keen on starting him.
  • MartialLikely. Has been thrown under the bus.
  • RashfordMaybe. I recall him being positive about Rashford's work ethic; just not suited to being the 9.
  • Lindelof — Doubtful. Mourinho signing.
  • McTominay — Doubtful. One of the few youths debuted under him.
  • Dalot — Doubtful. Mourinho signing.
  • Greenwood — Doubtful. Promoted to senior team under Mourinho. Possible that he noticed something in his personality, but no evidence to back it up.

Well okay technically you’re correct

But you can better Mourinho's second place finish and not a hole in one?

Still a bad headline as the only way most would think you could do that is to win the league which everyone knows we haven't done, unless they started to bring points totals whilst 2nd into it too? I can't even read the article to see, paywalled. Tried private browser/incognito mode but that didn't work either.

Ya but its always a balancing act. We needed some experienced heads then as much as we do now. The idea that every player should have a resale value isnt the best policy. What resale vale might kane have at bayern. What did Lewandowski get them? I do believe he was backed in the market and few would argue otherwise, but he should have been allowed to get rid of those he judged needed to go too. What good has keeping martial done this club
