Neville starts for Reserves

From that clip and that clip alone I've decided that Macheda looks like a combination of Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema, both as a player and in the looks department.

I'd agree with that, Chirag. People who don't watch the reserves don't realise that Possebon has been miles off a first team spot this season with the way he has been playing since his injury. Hopefully he'll have an injury free remainder of the season and a good pre-season with the first team and rediscover the good form he was showing earlier in the season.

In terms of midfield pecking order, Darron Gibson is ahead of both of them.

He seems to have established himself as a first-team squad player who is too good for reserve team football (kind of like Nani)

Either that, or he's injured and I'm talking out my hole.

Feck knows.

One of my recurring gripes about the reserve games is that they so rarely used to give match practice to members of the first-team squad who are struggling for form and not getting enough games as a result.

I know the standard is fairly dreadful but surely to feck giving Nani a 90 minute run-out +/- a confidence-boosting goal or two can only be a good thing?

He hasn't been playing well enough to feature much for our first-team but if/when he does get the nod he won't be match-fit and he won't have played any competitive football for ages. Which makes it even less likely that he'll be able to turn things round.

Thanks a bunch for that! James has been marvelous all season long.. IMO he has surpassed Possebon in the pecking order..

Agreed he was great last night, though he did make one costly mistake in losing the ball to Danny Guthrie who took it off him and then scored Newcastle's 3rd goal. Apart from that he did very well, yet to transfer his incredible knack of scoring goals for the Academy to the Reserves but he's only young and showing some real promise.

Federico Macheda was marvellous, made the most of the few chances he had and what really impressed me last night was how he managed to get onto the shoulder of the last defender and stay onside - very Ruud like, as were the finishes. Watched him consistently for about 18 months or so now and he's certainly improving rapidly in terms of his understanding of the game, technique and effort.

That's very true and I agree, I think the only thing that may give Sir Alex reservations for putting Nani in the reserves for a game or two is what it represents and the message it may send to the player and the media also I guess. I'm sure if Nani was put in the reserves for 2-3 matches then the media would be right on top of it and say stuff like "£17m Portugal superstar dumped to the reserves" or something rubbish like that because the overall perception of reserve football is that it's a significantly poorer level than the first team and it would be a confidence blow to the player. Though to be honest, I think at times that is a little overstated especially for young players as like yesterday you saw Cacapa, Guthrie and Xisco starting for Newcastle and the match before saw Boro start plenty of first-teamers too.

Yea I hope he gets back to his start of the season level.. Wasn't he banging goals in for fun then? Something like 3-4 goals in 5 games? This is right at the start of the season may even be part of the reserves pre-season!

Yeah.. that is a given! Gibson is a proper squad member now IMO.. A few weeks ago I was pinning my hopes on seeing a more Carling cup type of squad getting a look in to finishing off our remaining games of the PL season.. But obviously losing 6 points in 2 games did not help that..

Nani was not injured for the last game and he has been called up by Portugal but the way the game went at Craven cottage we had no chance of bring him on... But before the Fulham game he missed atleast 2-3 games with an injury iirc..

Eckersley is really impressing me of late. Strong in the tackle, comfortable on the ball, good positioning and can play all across the backline... defensively he has impressed me a lot more than Fabio. Players like Macheda and Fabio are getting the column inches, but Eckersley and Lee Martin have, imo, been the standout players consistently of late.

Either that or he's over in Italy with his uncle Trapatoni :D

That is some finishing.

Does anybody (apart from me) have real genuine hopes for him to get into the United squad in the not too distant future?

Brilliant game of football! Macheda will quite deservedly get all the headlines but some of the passing displayed by James and Eikrem was sensational. The latter gave his best performance at reserve team level for the second game in a row and I'm starting to think some of the seemingly over the top things Ole has been saying about him to the Noggie media isn't just nepotism.

At 17 Nile Ranger looks like a bit of a prospect by the way. For a moment there I thought he was Welbeck in a wig.

Just thought I'd second that. He's really looked like a class act for our reserves and has handled the step up with surprising ease, considering he still looks about 10 years old.

I'm gonna risk the wrath of sambachan here but he really does need to bulk up!

Mind you, that can't be easy with his diabetes an' all. Hopefully he can take inspiration from Gary Mabbutt.

 And I honestly never thought I'd hear someone hoping that anyone takes inspiration from Gary Mabbutt.
