Nemanja Matic| BBC says deal agreed

He's a good player but not the right age, it's alot of money for a 29 year old. We've basically just given Chelsea the money to sign Bakayoko a younger highly rated player. Meh I'm not hyped for this deal at all.

Between Matic and Perisic potentially costing us £100m it looks like a shite window. I like Lukaku but he's replacing someone who scored 28 goals last season and Lindelof looks like he needs time to settle. A feck load of money for some really unimpressive names imo.

I also recall Jose giving Matic an absolute bollocking during one of Chelsea's lean patches. He was thrown under the bus and called out in public for under performing. I wonder how you get over something like that and go on to sign for a manager who once subbed you on, and then subbed you off after a few minutes.

He got a really sweet left foot though, might add 4-5 goals a season with that and making his presence felt on corners.

29 on Tuesday but he doesn't have that many miles on the clock. I think he will be an astute medium term signing. Happy with this.

The fact that he is 29 in a short while is no big deal.

Jose signings have tended to be young(apart from Zlatan and Miki).

A bit more experience in the team will be a great addition.

Plus when Carrick finally retires next summer we will buy another DM-possibly Dendoncker.

They won the league with a player not suited to the system?

Just read that back and ask yourself if it makes any sense.
It makes plenty of sense, Conte was switching between Matic and Fabregas to partner Kante in his 3-4-3 and actually favoured Matic more. Does that make Fabregas a poor player now too?

In what way has he declined?

He's no slower than he used to be. He doesn't cover any less ground. He just happens to have been played out of position last season.

Athletes of his ilk don't suddenly fall off a cliff in their late twenties. He's still a world class holding midfielder if you ask him to be.

How is Matic a Chelsea cast off? He's been a prominent starter for them ever since he joined.

He isn't but that's how it is. Now he is a Chelsea cast off because he wanted to leave. Funny how he isn't rated by so many yet Juventus (who have very good midfield and team) and Jose wants him so much.

At this point I don't really care who we sign but £40m is an exceptional amount of money for Matic.

He makes 0.78475834949 defensive headers per game when he used to make 1.45356347637373. He's clearly fit for the Travellers yard.

Will be a good signing, as long as he doesn't expect to start every game.

He's been poor for a couple of seasons now but at this point, I'll take anything. Hopefully, Mourinho can reinvigorate his form but I wouldn't count on it. I still don't understand why we were not in for Fabinho instead who is younger, more versatile and a better player. The only thing Matic has on him is being PL proven but if we were to go with that logic, why did we not get Keane ahead of Lindelof?

Have you considered Monaco don't want to sell Fabinho? They said that both Lemar and Fabinho are important to them and won't be sold.

Maybe Jose wants a proper anchor who can sit deep and let Pogba get forward rather than a player like Fabinho who also likes to get forward.

Lastly, maybe we are interested in another player who isn't currently available this window so Matic is just there for now. (Weighl or someone, for eg)

Matic isn't the most exciting signing but if he comes in and provides cover, allowing Pogba to dictate play in the attacking third I'm all for it. Pogba is our best player and how our season pans out is dependant on him imo, he's an immense player and allowing him to flourish should be our number one priority. Which I'm hoping Matic will do.

My favorite opposition player a few years ago, makes sense to bring him in and hopefully he'll do great here. Our midfield trio with Ander, Pogba and Matic is probably the best in the league as well, so whats not to like?

If he was so crap, conte wouldn't have played him in 34 pl games. The system conte played was perfect for everyone bar matic and yet he did well, 1 goal and 7 assists to his name and his distribution was really good. Kante looked a tad underwhelming when paired with fabregas but he was allowed more freedom with matic.

Also, if he was so crap why would juve try to sign him. Juve are known for making some shrewd signings and they won't just be after matic. Also, they would have bought him ,if not for the fee.

Matic is 28/29 and I can easily see him doing a solid job for 4 more seasons unless any injury disrupts his career.

All in all I would be happy with him considering he will allow more freedom to pogba and is well suited in Jose's system of counter attacking football.

On paper you could hardly pick a more balanced 3. Hopefully Matic really holding as a proper DM will actually help our attack click like lots of us think they can.

EXcited by this potential signing just because it would mean less defensive burden on the likes of Pogba and Herrera. It would open up the team more to be able to express themselves on the offensive front better and put more pressure on the opponent.

HE may not be in form like his best season here but a change of club and scenery might invogerate him and United might have the winning midfield (finally!). Not to mention he would probably deployed back to that anchorman position rather than CM like for Conte.

JUst think another experienced midfielder would be needed especially if he does end up in Turkey.

Not enough goals in a Pogba - Matić - Herrera midfield three imo.

People want us to win the league, but also only sign 21/22 year old wonder-kids with no experience :wenger:

Matic is perfect for immediate improvement, and can provide a platform to allow someone like TFM to thrive and learn from.

By being professional

Very underwhelmed with this. Hasn't played well in 2 years and we are signing a reject from the champions. It doesn't exactly sound like a winning formula.

14/15 the best DMs in England were Matic and Schneiderlin. Hopefully matic works out here much better than Schneiderlin does

I'd have preferred someone younger honestly but you do get the feeling Jose feels he really needs to be winning titles as soon as possible.

Monster performance, if he's still anything close to this level we need to get him.

3:59

Which he's not - that was 3 years ago...

Same, probably going to cost 40 odd million as well. I guess he's an improvement on Fellaini.

A reject? They don't want to sell him, they offered him a new contract.

He obviously played well enough last season to be a first team mainstay of the title winning team.

Not enough goals in a Pogba - Matić - Herrera midfield three imo.
I think you'll see Pogba and Ander doing more work further up the pitch and we know both have goals in them. Matic not really expected to score. It's not like Carrick was prolific in the last 5 years.

I think there'll be plenty. If we are playing in that formation Pogba should score 15 goals next season (all competitions) and Herrera should chip in with a few more as well given that he'll be playing further forward (he scored 6 league goals in his first season here playing less frequently).
If anything, I'd say that midfield has a really good balance between attack and defence.
