Jose Mourinho wants a reunion with Nemanja Matic.

The Manchester United manager is determined to sign a dominant holding midfielder this summer to succeed Michael Carrick and bring the best out of Paul Pogba.

Tottenham’s Eric Dier is another target – but there is an acceptance among Old Trafford’s hierarchy that negotiating with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could be too problematic.

Matic is considered a more attainable target in a summer when Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is expected to make significant additions to his Premier League title winners.

Mourinho is set to spend in the region of £200m on a squad that will finish sixth this season and have recorded United’s lowest ever win total in the Premier League era.

He plans to buy at least one centre back, a midfielder and two forwards.

Burnley defender Michael Keane is a £25m target, while United are expected to trigger Antoine Griezmann’s £85m buyout clause at Atletico Madrid.

Another Chelsea player, Willian, has also been linked with a move to United.

Matic was a key figure in Mourinho’s most recent title triumph two years ago.

The then Chelsea manager convinced the club to spend £21m to re-sign the Serbian international, who had been used as a makeweight in David Luiz’ move to Benfica in 2011.

But it proved an inspired piece of business as Matic provided the anchor to Cesc Fabregas in the title-winning campaign of 2015.

N'Golo Kante is now seen as the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield, providing belief at Old Trafford that Conte would be prepared to sell Matic at a price likely to be in excess of £40m.

I would prefer Nianggolan myself but at least we have a song for the fecker.

When they say we want a holding midfielder in order to get the best out of Pogba. Does that mean Mourinho wants Pogba as a #8 or #10?

Pogba and Matic in a 2, with a #10 ahead?

Luckhurst is shite, and Chelsea won't sell him to us anyway.

The article says Dier is a target and that Levy is going to be difficult to negotiate with... What, we think Chelsea are going to be any easier?

"He scores goals Nemanja, he scores goals"

"Put him on a plane, bring him back from Zrenjani"

"Nemanja Matic, Nemanja Matic, running down the wing..."

Would rather Matic than most other midfielders, he's really good but can't see Chelsea selling to us, he's too important to them.

Didn't Mourinho throw Matic under the bus at Chelsea in his last season?

Imagine Pogba, Matic and N'Zonzi in one midfield..

He's 28, edging towards being too old if we're trying to build a team around Pogba, Rashford, Martial etc.

Di Marzio linked him to us last season and nothing happened.

I think we can go for better choices tbf.

A few years ago it was an obsession with signing anyone from Barcelona/Real/Bayern, and now we're flooded with tonnes of impossible to believe rumours to top Premier league team rivals.

Chelsea are going to fleece us.
Unless he suddenly becomes surplus they wont sell you him, hes been an integral cog in two title winning sides for them.

Radja would be far easier to acquire and is a much better player to boot.

Nainggolan isn't a holding midfielder, playing him or Herrera there would be a waste of either/both of their abilities.

Well it is Levy. Mata was sold, no reason to believe that Matic couldn't be had. Not sure the cost.

The "manager in for player he previously managed" is the least inspired of all transfer rumour tropes.

Mata was warming the bench. 40M for a player who sat on the bench every week was a deal Chelsea would have been stupid to turn down.

Matic, on the other hand, has been a mainstay in the Chelsea team this season, starting 30 out of a possible 38 games in the Premier League.

I agree that I don't think Matic will actually sign for United

But I definitely think Matic would hypothetically be easier to sign. Conte will probably want to assert his authority and sign his own CMs this Summer. Kante is untouchable but I don't think Matic is

 It's Matic you know, it's hard to believe it's not Scholes

Mata wasn't wanted by his manager. Matic is a first choice central midfielder in a side that just won the league -- not to mention they sold Mata to us when David Moyes was manager. Would Chelsea be happy to sell their starting central midfielder to Mourinho's Manchester United?

Same issue as with Kane. Facial appearance just doesn't provide the same commercial value as puppy loving Mata and Broken Brokes Jones

Surely Matic won't be starting if they sign Bakayoko?

Bouhafsi, as we know, is as official as a club announcement.

Manchester United & Chelsea are ahead in the race to land Tiemoué Bakayoko, with the latter side set to table a €45m bid imminently.

Might mean Matic is actually available.

FFS his agent puts this out and everyone laps it up. At this stage we are buying every player who ever worked with Mourinho. The same thing happened with Van Gaal.

Conte has been trying to find a replacement for Matic even before he joined them, Chelsea have been consistently linked with a new DM for a while now so there maybe some legs in this rumor. Assuming Fabinho isn't keen on us, surely folks would prefer Matic over Dier?

On Nainggolan, he is an absolute monster of a midfielder and can play a variety of role at a very high level but this season he is absolutely killing it playing as a 10 in front of two sitting midfielders. Do we want to sign another mid and assign him to a role which doesn't maximize his talent? We need a holding midfielder to play alongside Pogba in a midfield two, Matic/Dier would be a better fit for that role than box to box mids like Bakayoko and Nainggolan.
