Mata was warming the bench. 40M for a player who sat on the bench every week was a deal Chelsea would have been stupid to turn down.
Matic, on the other hand, has been a mainstay in the Chelsea team this season, starting 30 out of a possible 38 games in the Premier League.

FFS his agent puts this out and everyone laps it up. At this stage we are buying every player who ever worked with Mourinho. The same thing happened with Van Gaal.
Conte has been trying to find a replacement for Matic even before he joined them, Chelsea have been consistently linked with a new DM for a while now so there maybe some legs in this rumor. Assuming Fabinho isn't keen on us, surely folks would prefer Matic over Dier?

Do we want to sign another mid and assign him to a role which doesn't maximize his talent? We need a holding midfielder to play alongside Pogba in a midfield two, Matic/Dier would be a better fit for that role than box to box mids like Bakayoko and Nainggolan.
