Yeah, mostly the latter. Someone who can always be given the ball and will make sure we don't lose possession. Of the three, I think Herrera is closest to it. However, he doesn't really roam the pitch making himself available and have the presence that makes the rest of the team happy to surrender the ball to him when they run into trouble. He's just not that dominant a player and I don't think he ever will be.
Think he'll be happy to do that this season if asked to. Last season was quite different with him being the deeper mid in a 2 man midfield with someone like pogba.

I think that the issue was that Herrera didnt feel he could wander to make space and get the ball because he had to get back and cover a lot, with Matic in there I hope he will feel secure enough to do that roaming role.

I would still like our midfield to have a player who can be the 'hub' for possession, like Scholes used to be.

Herrera and Matic will do that between them. Herrera will be free to roam all over midfield keeping the ball ticking over, and Matic at his best is not just a player who sits back and tackles. When he won the first title at Chelsea he was brilliant at bringing the ball up through midfield and playing the ball into the forwards. Then if we still want the sprayed long balls we can give it to Pogba.

How did we manage to spend 2 months and pay £40m to sign someone who was no longer in Chelsea's first team plans?

Is there a formula that is hidden from the whole world? Where it says time spent on transfer is inversely proportional to transfer fee?

The fee has been the same for more than a month. If we had decided we were going to get him no matter what, then we should have paid this amount last month itself so he could have had a full preseason with us. Right now he isnt match fit and the season starts in less than 2 weeks.

He looked pretty fit last night. He'll be fine for the start of the season.

You have to take into consideration when Chelea bought Bakayoko, they probably were reluctant to let Matić go before they brought Baka in.

Didnt they sign Baka a while ago? Like 2-3 weeks ago?

He apparently joined them on the 15th. Probably took a week or so to settle him in, see how he does, fully assess him medically (if it wasn't done during the transfer medicals, there was something about his injury iirc).

Is it just me or has anyone noticed he resembles Hazard a bit. Never realised it when he at Chelsea but I quickly picked up on it yesterday.

Reminds me of a giant Sheldon from TBBT. What a fine player though, can't believe Chelsea sold him to us :)

Matic looks a cut above. Chelsea are out of their minds selling him to us.

He is very good isn't he. Very good start to this game.

You can tell he's won 2 PL titles in the last 3 seasons.

Looks like our only midfield player who belongs on the pitch against the likes of Modric and Kroos.

I'm scratching my head over here because the few times I watched Bakayoko, be looked nowhere near this level.

He's been by far our best player in the first half. The only one out there who has looked like he has anything to do on the pitch against a team of Madrid's quality

Remember when people tried to compare this guy with that fraud Schneiderlin. On the ball he's excellent as well as being able to dribble.

I really liked that clever pass to the right wing near the end there. Perfect decision making.

I'd say him and Valencia are the only ones who've played like they wouldn't be out of place on Madrid's team.

Much more progressive in possession than Dier would have been.
