Negredo to Man City

I think that has been the purpose of most of their purchases this season to strengthen their squad depth and not necessary their first eleven which is quite good as it is.

Agreed, their signings have been so consistently of that 'second tier' quality that that must be what they're doing. They don't need better top players, they just need to get them playing well again. Hart, Kompany, Toure, Silva, Aguero - all amongst the league's best performers in 2011/12, and all underperformed badly in 2012/13.

If Pellegrini can get those players going again, on top of the good depth of quality provided by their signings, then they'll be much more serious contenders for the title this season.

They've done that since they got rich. Spent 20m+ on individuals that won't improve their first 11.

This guy is top drawer, and at 16 mil looks an absolute steal for City.

3 million less than Jo...

Signing of the season for me. Been integral to Agueros form so far and has been good without him too. Great finisher + great technical ability.

He's fit in brilliantly to their squad but no. He's a good option but I'd take Aguero or Dzeko anyday

Negredo's looked better than Dzeko in every aspect from what I've seen. For one thing he's capable of scoring goals without being a hindrance to the team in general play. On 18 goals already and looks capable of outscoring the likes of Torres (31) and Aguero (30) in their debut seasons in all competitions. Who else is there besides those two and van Nistelrooy (36) that have passed the 30-goal mark?

Andy Cole did in his first Premiership season with Newcastle but that is technically not the same.

Edit: Was 93-94 Newcastle's first season back in the top division?

Seriously?

Aye, no doubt about it.

His overall game is several levels above Dzeko which is why he plays and Dzeko sits the bench when Aguero's fit.

He's brilliant technically, much better than I deemed him to be at Sevilla. A very creative striker, capable of great improvisation plus he's a very good teamplayer.

Fantastic signing, unfortunately.

His career was marked with some inconsistency in the Primera but he has looked phenomenal at City. It's true though, he has a lot of great qualities for a modern striker. Del Bosque should be happy as well

Dzeko would be quite a decent signing for Arsenal (heck, even Chelsea), but there's no way City will let him go to a rival.

On topic, Negredo's surpassed my expectations. He's slotted in brilliantly well.

I thought he's was going to be nothing more than a "squad" player for City. How wrong he's proven me.

One of the signings of the season.

I think its clearly the best form of his career - probably helped by playing with much better players.

I must admit when they signed him I didn't bat an eyelid. I thought he would just wind up in and out the team as a backup to Aguero, but boy has he taken his chance.

Sure his league goal's record so far isn't exactly outstanding, but in the CL and the cup competitions he is scoring for fun. Like other's have stated for £16M he was a bargain on this form.

Still think Soldado is a much better player?

For sure. If Soldado went to City with a good winger he'd played with before, he'd be playing well too. Instead he went to Spurs with 1000000 new players and no Bale. Negredo wouldnt have done nearly as well at Spurs either. But thats not to say I'm not dissappointed with Soldado's performance at Spurs, he should have done better. Its just no surprise that its a struggle at Spurs and easy at City.

The contrasting fortunes of Soldado and Negredo shows the importance of physicality in the lone striker role in the Premier League. Soldado has been squeezed out of a lot of games and most of the players around him don't have the guile or smarts to get the best out of him.

It's not lucky signing, I think Pellegrini could have easily signed Soldado if he thought he was better player for them, but he opted for Negredo instead.

Huh? Negredo hasnt played alone up front

He was just another case of people not having actually watched him that much. I reckon about 80% of posts on players in different leagues are based on very little evidence. Who has time to sit down and watch Sevilla and Valencia every week... I do it as well, probably had watched him less than 5 times ever and yet declared him a good signing...

He hasnt really done that either. He's making runs for oncoming balls rather than being Drogba

He's getting both. Better service/link-up play and offering more physical presence/out-ball opportunities.

Stop scraping around for mitigation for your posts in the summer.

Also, last season he missed the most clear cut goalscoring chances in the top leagues as I mentioned before

This past season Negredo missed more clear cut chances than any other player in the top five leagues across Europe. It’s not as though he’s shot shy either, as only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi took more shots this past season – both of them ended up with 34 and 46 goals respectively however, compared to Negredo’s 25.

This season he's taking his chances very well, both in terms of playing well when given a game and in terms of scoring from his shots. Again this comes from a player in good confidence, coming into a team with a winger he already played with a lot in Navas and being in a positive environment at City who would have gone into the season knowing the team that took their title no longer has Sir Alex. A vastly different proposition to Spurs. He's been a great signing because of the fact that until this season his performance wouldnt suggest he needs to be starting. He could play a squad role. I'm not sure Soldado would have been interested in that

Typical nonsense.
