Manchester City were close to a £23.8 million deal for Álvaro Negredo last night as a replacement for Carlos Tévez.
The club are in pole position to make the Seville striker, 27, their third summer signing after the arrival of Jesús Navas, the winger, and Fernandinho, the Brazil midfielder, for a combined £45.9 million.

Haven't seen him much.

Good signing?
The price looks a bit steep.

Haven't really paid much attention to him, even though I know of him. Had no idea he was "City quality". I guess with his age, he wouldn't mind that much being on the bench for now.

City really splashing the cash again this summer.

Not really a signing from the top level of strikers.

For the money they've spent their summer dealings so far are pretty underwhelming, and not at all worrying.

Never paid attention to him, from a quick look at his wiki page. He looks like a decent enough player, getting a goal every second game basically. Not a groundbreaking signing by any means, but should be able to do a job for them possibly.

Looks like City are going on a bit of a spending spree to try and win back the title

He's 2 months younger than Rooney.

That's quite a sum for someone who's turning 28 next month and has only won copa del rey. Granted he scores goals, but his overall play isn't impressive enough to warrant the price tag, IMO.

I guess they are out of the race for Suarez now?

Negredo is a similar style player of player to Dzeko I'd say (although not as technical but probably a lot better in the air), so I wouldn't rule them out for another striker yet, I can't see Dzeko staying put for much longer!

So, how does this sit with the FFP then. £70million spent. No way did they make enough of a profit to be able to spend £70million.

They also sold Balotelli off. Plus their wage budget is much lighter now that Santa Cruz, Bridge and especially Tevez is out of their team.

Quite a few 'meh' signings from them lately.

Buy La Liga players
???
Play sexy football

Least impressive signing City have made this summer. Very inconsistent and would even go so far as to say he lacks bottle

Answered your own question.

Socred a fair few goals for a player outside the top 2 in Spain and looks the type of player who will be able to handle himself in the PL and wages are probably at least half of Tevez. A decent option, but I smell the end for Dzeko.

He's not better than Dzeko.

I don't know about Fernandinho but Navas was a good signing with potential to be a great signing. This isn't an upgrade on anything City have.

Easily not worth anything north of 20m. He isn't any better than Dzeko and Tevez so that's a step down.. Having said that he had his best season and is in his prime...

Are citeh the new liverpool ? Well at least they have some good spanish players but £23m for this guy is crazy money.

He's a decent player, nothing less nothing more. For £24m they could have got Lewandowski who in spite of being an utter cnut and a mercenary is a superior player. He'll most likely be Dzeko replacement as they are quite similar, they're still going to sign another forward to cover fo Aguero I believe as Aguero and Negredo won't be enough to go through a whole 50+ games long season.

His name would suggest he has raw talent, but he doesn't seem to have any raw talent at all when you watch him play.

I haven't seen him play for ages so I don't know how he's developed since his first season with Sevilla. I remember Pellegrini wanted to keep him and not bother buying Benzema so I guess this move makes sense from that perspective.

Don't think he's worth the fee.

He finished the season very strong last year. 7 in 4 games., he ended the season scoring a goal every 120mins. From what I can tell looking at some Sevilla formations he needs to play alongside a striker, so how will that work at City? Surely they'd want a player that leads the line by himself?

Yeah judging by Pellegrini's favored formation - he plays with 1 up top right? In that case I think Negredo might just have been purchased as a squad player - to fill up the gap left by Tevez/Balotelli (though I think he's inferior to both).

Only time will tell. With better players around him, he might just score 20+.

Seems strange that City continue to sign players who are in their late 20's - all signings this season are players born 85

What happened to Navas and his homesickness problem? I know he's now able to go playing international tournaments and such, but spending a few weeks with his compatriots is a whole different world to permanently living in another country where I don't think he speaks any of the language. I've got a feeling he'll return home to Spain at the end of the season.

None of City's signings have really been top level for the amount they've spent, potentially very good players, but at 27/28 none of them are really going to get much better than they are. They've struggled to attract the next level of player for a while now really.

By signing spanish or spanish-speaking players exactly the same age as him and demand that everyone speaks spanish - they hope to solve the homesick-problem. "No Jesus - you are still in Spain. "
