NBA Thread 2013-2014

Smith loves a jump shot but he's so bad at them.

P.s Anthony Davis just needs to bulk up and he will be the best pg in the league for the next decade.

Sorry I should have said josh smith not JR who is a nutter btw.

At the halfway point in the season, here is what the playoffs would look like if they started today:

East
1 Indiana
8 Brooklyn

4 Atlanta
5 Washington

2 Miami
7 Detroit

3 Toronto
6 Chicago

West
1 San Antonio
8 Dallas

4 Los Angeles C
5 Houston

2 Portland
7 Phoenix

3 Oklahoma City
6 Golden State

It's a damn shame that Al Horford is out for a season.. Hawks have managed well without him, but with him they'd have a legit chance to make something happen in the playoffs..

There are now murmurs that both Joel Embiid and Jabari Parker will stay in school another year.

Beno Udrih has reportedly requested a trade. Beno. Udrih.

The Brow had 27 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four steals as the Pelicans snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Kobe confirms he won't play in the 2016 Olympics.

 Watch tanking teams become more shit now. That said, it's still early days. I'd wait until after the March tournament before giving such statements any credence.

Was that against the Grizzlies? They have no wins against anyone in their conference. Transition season.

Not been able to follow the NBA as much this year (stupid BT taking the rights). As anticipated the Lakers suck, but how poor is the East?!

Indiana have played well, I think they may beat the Heat this year in the playoffs.

The series won't even go to a game 7. Miami are visibly fatigued (both mentally and physically). They can still put out a great performance for one game (or more often for a stretch of 6 minutes), but they can't sustain it now.. Indiana is way more resilient, much hungrier, still fresh, and have better players all round. The roles players have been really disappointing for Miami this season (G.O. is not going to be the "next big thing" for Miami either).

Indiana will win 4-1 in the ECF this year (win first two at home, lose one at Miami, then win the next 2).

Miami will still win the ECF, in a sweep I think. The referees will give them all the calls and they will beat the Pistons who just finished knocking off Indiana and Atlanta.
What happened?! You were on a roll earlier in the season.. Will be very disappointing if Detroit miss out on the playoffs this year. Them finishing 7th could be the only fun I may have this year (we can do a show on it!). At the moment, sadly, it doesn't look likely.

My favorite stat...my how the basketball world has lost it's ability to pass!

Ty Lawson? Brandon Jennings? Jrue Holiday? All in the top 10 in assists? Yikes.

Assists Per Game:

1. Chris Paul 11.2
2. Steph Curry 9.2
3. Ty Lawson 8.9
4. John Wall 8.5
5. Ricky Rubio 8.2
6. Brandon Jennings 8.2
7. Jrue Holiday 7.9
8. Kyle Lowry 7.6
9. Jeff Teague 7.3
10. Michael Carter-Williams 6.7

And just a few years ago I thought the PG position was so stacked! Kendall Marshall is at 9.5 APG, but hasn't played enough games to qualify for the official list. Likewise Steve Blake at 7.7.

The list of the next 10 has perhaps bigger names: Jameer Nelson, LeBron, Isaiah Thomas, Mike Conley, Tony Parker, Kyrie Irving, Goran Dragic, Monta Ellis, Damian Lillard and Nicolas Batum. (Doron Williams, Russell Westbrook and Kobe Bryant would be on the list but for too few games).

Even better...

Assist to Turnover Ratio:

1. Chris Paul 4.47
2. Jose Calderon (DAL) 3.98
3. Josh McRoberts (CHA) 3.88
4. Nate Wolters (MIL) 3.47
5. Kendall Marshall (LAL) 3.42
6. Kyle Lowry (TOR) 3.39
7. Shelvin Mack (ATL) 3.29
8. Mike Conley (MEM) 3.23
9. Steve Blake (LAL) 3.12
10. Ricky Rubio 3.07

Paul, Lowry and Rubio deserve a lot of credit for being in the top ten of both lists.

Point guards are shooting more and assisting less. I've heard some comments describing Chris Paul as a stat stuffer.

the PG role changed completely after the hand check rule tbh. Pass first point guard is dead. Even Rondo had to develop a bit of an outside shot, and he was at driving and dishing/laying it up.

I really, really, really do not understand your point here. Point guard play in the NBA is at its best ever. Ricky Rubio, an incredible playmaker and defender, is a below average point guard in the league right now. That's how much depth there is.

Paul, Parker, Curry, Rose, Westbrook. Rondo/Irvin/Williams/Lawson are the 6-7-8-9 group. When is the last time the NBA had a #5 point guard as good as say Steph Curry? Or a #9 point guard as good as Ty Lawson? Never!

If you look here, it shows Top 10 APG for every season. http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/ast_per_g_top_10.html

That site also has season summaries where they have statistics for the league as a whole in each year. I picked out a few random years:

1969-70: 117 possessions per game
1979-80: 103 possessions per game
1989-90: 98 possessions per game
2003-2004: 90 possessions per game
2013-2014: 94 possessions per game

Here's a chart from google.

You can't just compare raw assist totals year by year.

I'm disappointed Conley isn't in your list Eboue.

But out of those guys you mentioned, I would only classify 3-4 as elite, "thread through a needle" passers. It's not an inditement on their overall skill.

I was joking about there being a depleted pool of talent at PG.

The position has certainly changed, and there is no room for a pure passer who can't get his own shot. Steve Kerr couldn't hang today.

100% this. I'd argue Rose, Curry, Westbrooks aren't pure points either. Rondo is the last of a dying breed.

So, the NFL season is finished an United are painful to watch, I got referred here: who should I support?

Pacers, Thunder, Portland, Heat, Spurs. 2 of those teams will be in the Finals. All play decent basketball as well.

Who am I going to have heard of in any of those teams? I haven't paid attention to basketball in about 5 years.

The guys on PTI were discussing a rumour last week that if LeBron leaves, Miami may get Blake Griffin in a sign-and-trade. I was hoping he would end up with the Lakers, doesn't anyone want to join us :(

The Heat has Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, and they're not going to win anything this year.

If you want a team that'll make it all the way then it's Indiana or OKC. They'll meet in the finals this year. Pick one.

I'd say Steve Nash is probably the last great pure point guard in the league. If you can only pass but not creating your own shot, you'll be Kendall Marshall

Kendall Marshall sure has had some impressive stat lines this season, I wonder if he'll become a starter next season when Nash leaves.

I also wonder if he can play defense.
