NBA 2024-2025 ; Lakers Land Luka

Quick question as an outsider - do players have no agency in trades in the NBA? Couldn't Luka have just refused the move?
They usually don’t. Very few players have a no trade clause, that allows them to veto any trades. But this is very rare.

so in NBA, player has no say at all when club wanna move them to another club unlike football ?

Yeah. The simple explanation is that players are techncailly employees of the league but their rights are attributed to a particular franchise via draft, trade or free agency.

so what would happened if an nba player doesn't want to be traded to another franchise ? the franchise would have to sue him or void his contract ?

They have no say in it unless they have a trade clause. It is important to keep in mind that it is the contract that is traded whether the player accept it or not is irrelevant, his rights aren't owned by the team that traded him. Now the player is free to not play, in which case he will be fined and after a certain time the franchise isn't obligated to pay him. But generally speaking players with particular value aren't traded to places where they really don't want to be.

Depends what long term is but it would be funny if he quits this summer, imagine the content

Score one for my Nico Harrison is intentionally screwing over the ownership theory

The way the Lakers keep on landing some of the most talented players of every decade is astonishing. I know that they're one of the 2 historic powerhouse franchises together with the Celtics (while being a bigger market than Boston) and they have that Hollywood allure but still...crazy.
I don't know about the Lakers playing style but as a market asset Luka is perfect. Young, talented international star that speaks perfect Spanish to boot.

Durant to Warriors is picking up steam. Some reliable journos discussing this.

is he way past his prime ?
It'd be the last dance type of thing. One last hurrah with Curry and Draymond, they'd be contenders with him.

I can actually see Suns doing that. Apparently it'd be Butler to Suns, Durant to Warriors... if Miami can fleece both of them and get some of Warriors future picks, this could be great for them. Warriors 2027+ picks are probably the best assets you can obtain right now.

My Blazers can't stop winning. 7 in the last 8, easily disposed of in-form Indiana team. This feels like bubble Suns, chemistry has been insane lately.

Mavs apparently want him too but will soon realize they have nothing to offer Suns. Maybe if they actually traded Luka for a proper package, they could reroute some of that to get KD… even having another of Lakers picks would be helpful.

It’s going to be a difficult deal for Durant in the first place, you’d think Kuminga and Podz would be involved as well as Wiggins for salary purposes alone, also adding in Schroeder who is eligible from today to be aggregated I believe, plus picks.

Their depth would be decimated, would be interesting to see.

I think it would be reasonably straightforward actually. They'd include Wiggins, Kuminga and a salary filler, plus they own all their picks except 2030 which goes to Washington but is 1-20 protected, so they could easily claim it back by offering them a couple of second round picks instead. If I'm Phoenix, I'm taking that deal as long as I get their first round picks unprotected or with very light protections... but they seem to want Butler.

More noises that Phoenix are listening to offers, I could also see Rockets being interested. They own many of Phoenix future picks so could just give them back in return, this makes total sense for Phoenix if their intention is to rebuild... which again, I'm not sure it is given that they want Butler (I don't get it, swap Durant for Butler and you have a much worse, and equally expensive team with no upside).

Would have to be Wiggins/Kuminga/Schroeder/Payton plus picks and they would need to take a couple of mins back for salary purposes as they are near to the first hard cap I believe.
