NBA 2024-2025 : All Star Weekend

Will just add that despite all the criticism (and rightfully so) of that move from the Mavs I really like what am seeing so far from Max Christie. He is playing really good basketball and even better than he played for the Lakers recently. So, there is some small silver lining in the whole mess for the Mavs atm. Although, Doncic will just explode in attacking sense at one point and continue to do so putting the whole thing into proper perspective. His dynamic with LeBron will be interesting as well, am not fully convinced on that one at first sight, but very early days.

On a different note, how shit that All Star concept looks!

A perfect role player in the modern NBA.

Unfortunately he will always be tied to that stupid deal, but he is a really nice building block as long as he is committed to being a high level role player as opposed to a 1st/2nd option on a team.

He's basically a young version of KCP

24 points to win 3 point contest. Steph, Klay and Sabrina Ionescu could hit 24 in their sleep.

Disappointing....

Mcclung's first dunk was niceee. He should win it again unless Castles does something crazy in the final round.

Worst all star games of all time?
If you think that's the worst, you've not been watching recently. There was at least marginal interest in the games. Kyrie actually tried to play defense on more than one occasion. I was shocked, but pleasantly surprised.

Games were actually better but did not matter as the rest of the show was very bad. It was basically ads and rest filled with some basketball.

No matter how many times they try to re-invent the concept to revive the All Star weekend, they seem to fail miserably every time.

It would have been 100 times better without Kevin Hart

And so many fecking stops. The whole 20 min gap to do that stupid tnt presentation.

The concept is ok - though 40 is too low especially for the final when you have teams barely trying in defence - but all the rest of the pageantry was ridiculous. People want to see basketball not Hart make another lame fecking joke

Poor sod Mark Williams the real, casual casualty from deadline frenzy then?

Not that I bother to tune into the ASG these days but I did prefer it when it was just simple east vs west. Have all the nonsense shenanigans in the days leading up to the game, then just have the ASG as the single standalone event on the main day.

I don't mind the skills challenges, I usually watch highlights of the 3 points contest the day after. I used to love the dunk contest when I was a kid, these days I barely even know the players who are competing. I mean no disrespect to McClung, but it used to be about the best dunkers in the league going at it, but now we have guys in the G league, who can't make an NBA roster winning the thing 3 years in a row.

Because the likes of Zion and Ja (and LeBron and co) continually duck it

The players just don't care about the event. Silver's attempts to rejig the All Star Game is just rearranging the furniture on the Titanic deck. I'm not sure how the genie gets put back in the bottle. How do you externally motivate multi-millionaires to give a feck about an exhibition game if they don't care to start?

That said, Kevin Hart's antics marked a new nadir in the history of the event. Just go back to East vs West, and standard skills challenge/3 point contest/dunk contest on Saturday. Keep the celebrities on Friday only. If the classic format sucks it sucks, at least we can simply blame the players.

Or maybe Adam Silver is hoping these antics focus the attention on him instead of the players? It's working...

USA versus the world. Maybe just maybe they get hit in their pride if they get a beating on national television by Luka, SGA, Giannis, Jokic and Wembanyama. Could even make it Europe vs North America if you want SGA on the other side. Alternate between Europe and USA for hosting cities - I know that several big cities here in Europe would be up for it and make for a great crowd / atmosphere surrounding the event at the very least.

Wembanyama is definitely up for it. If not that, just go back to East vs West old school style, East in white team jerseys, West in colour ways. If they put half as much effort into it as they do in their offseason pickup games it would already be a success. It doesn't need to be an exhibition with loads of dunks and alley oops, people want to see the best players go at it, simple as that. But seems like it's almost cool these days to look down on the event.

That...

I didn't know I wanted to see this until now

The article brings up the fair point that you're disadvantaging the larger pool of American players with this format but feck it I don't care

Let's also host the game in Belgrade or Athens with their crazy fans

Feck em indeed, they can volunteer for the dunk contest or 3-point contest if they so desperately want to be a part of a weekend they have shit on for the last decade or so.

You could maybe even do a mini tournament with the USA, Canada, Europe and a "Rest of the World" team. Yes, USA and Europe are stronger, but Canada and the Rest of the World team are able to field good lineups.
And, as @adexkola said, host it in Belgrad or Athens and watch all hell break lose. I'd watch!

That would never work. I doubt there's been 5 Canadian all stars in the entire history of the game.

After asking AI and googling...

SGA, Alexander-Walker, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Nembhard, Dillon Brooks, Andrew Wiggins, Dort, Mathurin, Brandon Clarke, Dwight Powell, Zach Edey

They are not winning, but it's not too bad.

I like World v USA. Don’t need to make it more complicated than that. A Ryder’s Cup of sorts. Maybe there would be some international pride at play for the players to motivate them.

But I doubt it gets moved from the USA.

Nah that's totally incorrect. Jamal Murray has never been an All-Star. He was part of one All-Star weekend as "rising star" in his rookie season, not really the same. Same goes for Nembhard and Mathurin.

I don't think RJ Barrett and Dillon Brooks have been All-Stars either. Would surprise me if Clarke, Powell, Edey have been actual All-Stars as well.

An obvious one is Steve Nash. Maybe Rick Fox got one during his entire career, not sure. Andrew Wiggins made it when the Warriors won the title in 2022.

How many of those have been all stars apart from SGA?

Sorry, wasn't about them being All Stars but about what roster Canada could assemble. @Desert Eagle

And yes, USA vs. Rest of the World would be the better format.
After all, Germany are the current World Champions... ;)

Even with USA vs rest of the world you could end up with some years where the balance is off. The only sure bet international all stars are SGA, Wemby, Jokic and Giannis. Out of 24 players at best you're probably getting 8 international players.

Think World have enough players right now (if all healthy) to pull this off vs USA, if that doesnt work then just scrape whole thing, for USA vs RotW to work you need someone to start barking and say mad stuff about other side, spark is needed to ignite whole thing, it would be probably better if shit talk comes from USA side. After that you need RotW to whoop USA ass if USA acts like they dgaf and hopefully that would make USA more invested. Also switching hosts could be good idea.

We all saw what they can produce when they feel like they need to prove something at the Olympics last summer. And that was quite an aging team at that, with LeBron, Curry, Durant past their prime.

Luka, SGA, Giannis, Jokic, Wemby is probably one of, if not the best starting line-up you can produce out of the NBA right now, regardless of nationality. Don't think the USA would be able to field a team that beats them.

Yea only close one was vs Serbia, about 2nd part, on the paper maybe but at least it has higher chance to actually be decent watch, bring some loud mouths like Ant, would say Ja and Booker but their shit was turned into memes. Either way dont think West vs East would change anything with current stakes

After a decade or so of 170-150 games , it was becoming a bit of a joke. The changes have made it worse though.
Ah I see, it was good fun in the 90s. I'm with Robin on this, change it up a bit, NHL has that Europe, Canada, USA tournament thing going. Existing format is disastrous.

Definitely helps when players start a mass fighting brawl a minute into the first game during an exhibition tournament

Luka, Sabonis, Porzingis, Bogdanovic, Gobert, Wagner, Markkenen, Siakim, Sengun, Murray, Wiggins… there’s plenty decent players

obviously if it was World v USA it wouldn’t be restricted to just x number of all stars, you’d just pick the best 2 squads.

Then you'd be changing the entire meaning of being an all star. Considering how those selections factor into contracts with the current CBA I can't see them switching it up that drastically. Consider me old school but you have to be an all star to play in the all star game. You could have a world vs USA rising stars match but for me only the selected 24 should be in the all star game.
