Nathan Collins

There's nothing wrong with that, part and parcel of a forum, we are not going to agree on everything.

Of course, but I'm not going to base my opinion off of what other people are saying. I will always have my own independent opinion based on what I know and what I've seen. Fans are far from experts and I'll never judge a player from clips.

I have no idea if they have, but this argument stemmed from @haram stating that our scouts have done a terrible job and maybe we should listen to our ex players instead when they recommend players

He didn't say anything out of that sort. He said that ex players can tell better about the players character which is fair point.
You, on the other hand seem insistent that we shouldn't listen to ex-players because they've a track record of poor buys which due to Ronaldo's example was pretty nonsense.

In terms of gauging their attitude and mentality. Yes we should consider the opinion of people who know these players personally and have trained with them. A scout is not in the training ground with Collins like Fletcher was. It's not just scouts, the recruitment in general has been poor. SAF and Gill always assessed and found out what players were like as people.

I love how heated the debate is over this lad.
About 2 people on this forum have seen him kick a ball and chances are both saw it on YouTube.
Don't p*SS yourselves either way, we have not signed him yet but if we do it'll be relatively cheap anyway, about half the value of a noodle or Tyre deal.
The expertise never fails to astound though, especially the ones that are writing him James and Longstaff off in the same sentence having seen two YouTube clips and read a Swansea forum

I formed my own opinion based on what I saw and it was pretty much summed up by posts I read on the Swansea forum. I can judge players from clips, doesn't mean im right but you can get an idea of what a player brings to the table at their best since thats what those clips focus on

Clips remove context of the game, the opponent, the tactics, the circumstances. They do very little for me.

Yes clips and opinions of fans who watch them on a regular basis. Ive copied and pasted posts from Swansea fans for instance in the Daniel James thread, and their opinions pretty much confirm what I thought when I watched the clips. You can view them in his transfer thread.
You do realize we could cherry pick fan comments from any forum to make any player look good or bad?

They do have a track record of poor buys and I mentioned the examples of Miller and Fitouri . Which ex player has unearthed a gem of player who united signed and became a success? Were United already scouting Ronaldo before that friendly or were they not?

I didn't cherry pick in the James thread, I offered views from different sides and provided the link for people to see for themselves

Do you believe that the club weren't scouting Miller and Fitouri before? Heck Fitouri was just a punt for u23 squad. The ex players word is just an added endorsement. The scouts get it wrong everywhere in the world.

Again more than happy to sign him just can't be part of one of the 5 we need to sign for next season. As an extra sure.

How have people already decided he's not good enough? There's not even any youtube videos of him. Feck, people are negative.

Who in here has ACTUALLY watched the guy play? I want to know if he has pace or is as slow a Blanc/Mertesacker?
He's not a Blanc or Mertesacker but no he's not particularly fast either. I haven't seen him play in around a year but he used to be one of those players who had trouble with small nippy players because he took a while to get into his stride. Doesn't look particularly slow over longer distances but can look a bit cumbersome in terms of acceleration over short distances but he may have improved in this over the past year as his strength developed.

Struggling to get whatever point you are trying to make in these threads. Should they just not buy anybody because previous scouts have signed badly?

Freely admit I have never seen this guy play but it's worrying how we're trawling Championship teams for players. Happy to be proven wrong and maybe Stoke have unearthed a gem but their academy is generally crap.

When you buy a player and loan him back to the club there ceases to be any incentive for that club to prioritise the players development though. Especially when it's a player so early in his development. If you don't get him here quickly and let him make friends he likely won't bond with the club as well.

They finished the season 2 points behind our u23s

It's a tactic I had been suggesting since joining the forum. I was never a big fan of squad players. You either first team material or you have the potential to be one. However for it to work there must be a level of ruthlessness we haven't seen in decades. Once it's evident that a player is squad player then he should be sold to make way to someone with the actual potential to succeed

Yes yes and yes please.

Hopefully what we're transitioning towards.

What, 6th in division 2? Finishing 2 points behind one of the worst U23 sides weve ever had is hardly something to write home about. Stoke have had pretty much zero top class academy graduates.

So Fletcher just so happened to be playing at a lower division club that has a player who is capable of playing for United in its youth ranks.. great, seems Lady Luck was shining on us for once.

Stoke fans haven't seen much of him but everyone thinks he's looked really good when he did play.

I don't know much about him niether does any one really, only the stoke staff. He maybe one for the future? But we need a top cb.

Stokes best defender over the past 10 years was a player we deemed not good enough for us. Now we have our eye on one of their reserves. Ironic.

No idea if he's good enough but the kid turned 18 a few weeks ago and you can't really hold Stoke not developing players against him.

Also, if we'd signed Nzonzi, their actual best defensive player (DM but overall) coming off his best season at Stoke, like Sevilla did, for 7M in 2015, we'd have avoided paying 40M for Matic 2 years later and had 2 more years of solid DM play.

These young talents look nothing special, that's my argument and these reports of their 'great attitudes' don't do anything for me, we need quality as well. The jury is still out on McTominay, he's expected to play a bigger role now that Herrera is gone and his mettle is going to be tested more than it ever has in this upcoming season. You wouldn't look twice at McTominay if he played for Stoke city.

These talents are not exceptional and its no wonder they're only linked with other clubs in their league or midtable PL clubs, some are not. I bet most of them won't make it at any top 6 clubs, some won't cut it in the PL period. That's my opinion and we shall revisit this as time reveals what they're made of
Well to be fair, our scouts may do just that, but our rivals wouldn't I agree.

Nzonzi was deemed not good enough by most of the Caf if I recall. But yes it just sums up the farce we have been for some time, plenty of teams have made signings much better than us but most of us fans seem to have an excuse or answer for everything regarding us.

This place will be golden when people realize we are only signing young, hungry players this year.

No way we will sign all these youngsters as well as a handful of first teamers.

Those days are gone and ain’t coming back for a long time so buckle up and buy some popcorn

I quess Fletcher if he recommend this kid know a little bit about CB having played with a few of high playing and mental standard. We once signed a tall English defender from Middlesborough in Gary Pallister and he did turn out rather good. At least this kid seems impressive and I´m all for trying these signings. I´ve had enough of Rojo and similar players.

From the compilation he looks like he belongs exactly where he is. Hoof ball.
