True that, always a good replacement player to cause divide
It's actually quite amazing at times how often the answer to most debates is "somewhere in the middle", but yet you have 1 side veering off to overrating and the other to underrating.

I read some comments on Valdes as well. Yeah, he has major question marks over him, especially under the high ball, recovering from injury etc. But then you read comments which make him sound like a Sunday league keeper.

I'm glad he left. Nani was just so frustrating to watch these past few seasons. That said, I did at one point think he would be our "main guy" for the coming years. That one season when he was leading our race to the title was amazing for him. Good player and I'll thank him for his service but I'm looking forward to our new wingers. He'll be a top player for Fenerbace.

All that disbelief about clubs from top 4 leagues not taking a gamble on player, who is going to tear that Turkish league apart,it should not be allowed, its like a cheat mode.

The weird thing is, it's only certain players that this treatment is reserved for. You're right in what you say, the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. I tended to stay out of Nani threads especially over the years, you would have to sift through tonnes of agenda driven posts before finding anything sensible. I see that hasn't changed with comments like the one you initially quoted.

Yeah, I actually think Nani could have or should have been snapped up by a much bigger club (all due respect to Fener). I suppose his wages is a big stumbling block. He'd have been a good option for top 10 clubs in the EPL, or even some La Liga clubs.

Yeah I never really understood the need for agenda posting on the internet. So I hardly ever tend to get into massive discussions (like I see you did in the Coleman thread!) on the Caf, other than 2-3 replies. Then it's time to move on.

Some are hard to stay out of. I don't mind them so much when they are about opposition players or transfer targets, but when it's our own players, the threads can be a mess. I regret getting embroiled in the Coleman debate, I got sucked into that one. All I said was he's a good player and got met with all sorts of backlash and downright lies about the player.

The Berbatov thread back in the day was utterly mental, I think only Nani has ever rivalled him with that extreme level of agenda driven posting. Welbeck is another I have unfortunately been sucked into. That was more to do with people using his sale as a stick to beat the club and LvG with. I also steer well clear of Messi / Ronaldo threads, I hear they are a thing of tragedy.

Aye, they are. At least now most have moved on from Ronaldo v Messi to Messi v GOAT's! Progress!

and would he want to play in any of those countries?

Well that may be part of it. Not sure it's enough of a reason for us to accept a crap fee though.

Seems like an agreement for a bit more has been reached now in any case.

It's really shame how it all turned up with Nani. Based on his football in 2010. and 2011. I thought of him as United best player, goals, assists, overall play, he was brilliant, but for whatever reasons (injuries, dip in form, change of tactics) he didn't make that expected step forward.

This fee is laughable, but since there aren't any other interested clubs and United wants to get rid of him + high wages then it's no wonder he's going on cheap.

Wish him all the best in Turkey, hope he earns himself another transfer, he's still young enough afterall.

nani asked for a big fat contract right after his brilliant season, about same amount of money when nasri whoring the shitte. when he didn't get what he had wanted he lost his focus in producing good football. in football you need to have a 2nd good season to confirm your brilliance that you are no one-off wonder. and he failed to do that. furthermore he was too focus in playing his own game even this was at the expense of the team play. the two factors summed up together to derail his football career.

he hasn't show sign of his wish to put back his career into the right track, and this is very odd to let such situation to continue for almost 3 or 4 seasons. such a prolonged period of unwillingness to advance in his career makes him a big risk to any decent football clubs. he can easily turn himself to be a big liability to his future football club given his past record, wages level and age. maybe that's the reason why the clubs in italy & spain would think twice in signing nani.

i can only say nani was ruined by a bad advisor. he's not the first one and will not be the last one neither

when a fee of €12m was mentioned last month I thought it was too low but this is daylight robbery - we are still paying for Moyes' mistakes!

there would surely be interest from clubs in Spain, Italy etc but I suppose his wage demands must be too high and he is not willing to take a pay cut so ends up on the list of highly paid mercs who you expect to play in better leagues (Sneijder et al)

I guess the low fee is to avoid the Adebayor situation where we would have to pay a chunk of his wages until his contract with us run its course.
Shame it didn't work out for him here. He showed how good he could have been which made it all the more frustrating. Combination of his inconsistency & not getting the run of games in his preferred position. Shame but these things happen.

Would like to see him tear it up there & get some credibility back. Became somewhat of a joke in the English press which was pretty lazy & unfair in my opinion. Bloody Scott Parker got writers' player of the year despite West Ham finishing bottom when Nani had been our best player & we finished top!

We'd get more than what, £10-15 million's worth just from keeping him and playing him.

Depay might be better, we'll wait and see if thats the case. Even if it is, that'd make him the 2nd best winger at the club

If he's that good, why do you think he's going to Fenerbache for such a low price? I mean by your reckoning he should be a bargain for the majority of top teams across Europe, yet nobody is interested....

As an outsider, this appears a poor deal for United (money-wise). Then again, you couldn't expect much more given his recent form in a United shirt.

I'm really surprised an English Europa League club like Tottenham didn't take a punt on him. He's more experienced at the top level than any player they've had in a long time.

I'm assuming his wage has put possible suitors off because he's top quality on his day.

How would we get that money from playing him? Oh yeah we wouldn't it is just an arbitrary number pulled out of the ether.

He's been on the *available* list since Sir Alex's last year here, thats a good 2-3 years now and in that time, the only suitors he's had have come from Turkey (with actual concrete offers), as another poster mentioned, even 3 years back the bid was rumored to be 5.5mill and we were looking for 7m (Which no team that summer was prepared to match), that was for a 26 year old Nani, without his bumper 100k+ a week deal, whom hadn't spent 3 years in limbo.

It's fine to proclaim the bid derisory, but the reality is it appears we're desperate to get rid, and have been for a few years now, even at 4.5mill or so there doesn't seem to be anyone else prepared to match it, the reality is we should take it, clear his wages, and both parties move on.

This is precisely how I feel.

In this situation, it's not about making a profit off Nani, that will never happen considering the amount we had paid for him to begin with, but more so with the amount of money that would be cleared off the books if he goes. As you said he's on over 100k a week, that money could be used on a player that is actually in and around the first team as opposed to being on loan elsewhere.

who offered more? Nobody it seems

I am sure several clubs would be willing to pay us a higher transfer fee than the reported offer from Fener - however they obviously wont be willing to match his wages so that means either he takes a pay cut (which I assume he is refusing to do) or we subsidise the deal which over 3 years will probably cost us several million

Reportedly cost us 4.8 million in wages last season. That's why the lowish price.

Think he should do very well in the Turkish league as long as he is motivated and doesn't go the don't give a damn way.

It hurts me to see him go. At one time he was the most exciting and skillful player that we possessed. I will always remember how he would make Chelsea and arsenal defenders fall on their butts and how he dismantled a Bayern Munich.
I wish him the best, at one time he was my favourite player. Anyway players come and go but we will always have Man United.

He's literally shown people that he doesn't have the mentality to play at a top club, and that if he's given a bigger role at a lesser club he'll excel (all due respect to Sporting and Fenerbache).

No big team in one of the 3 main leagues will want him, he'd be okay at a team like Sevilla but maybe his wages stand in the way. Sure it's sad that such a talented player won't realise his true potential and have a career that justifies his talent, but that's the way it is. Nowadays, you can have all the talent in the world but if you haven't got the mental strength to accompany that talent then you won't make it at a top club.

Exactly, his wages mean he isn't good value for what he offers. That applies to us too though. The notion that we'd get 10-15m worth of value if we played him is obviously wrong when he can't justify the wages he would be on in that time as far as (apparently) pretty much every big team in Europe is concerned.

So it all works out the same then. People are just hung on transfer fees as if we get some sort of trophy for them.

Nani has harmed his career by going there. Why didn't he just take a pay cut by staying at Sporting?

And he fee for Nani is a little low. But, no one is going to pay the 10-15mn expected by Utd fans. Heck even Hernandez won't be bought for more than 10-15mn.

Why the myth peddling? His best season to date was as player of the year for Manchester United's #19.

You're getting a great deal. On his day, he's unplayable. Should do great things in the Turkish league.

Yep, I'm well aware who he is. Should we finalise it, it will be great business for us because we're accustomed to getting robbed for decent European players who ultimately bring nothing to the team e.g. Krasic. Kuyt was another Premiership player we got for a bargain and he turned out to be a revelation in Turkey. If Nani proves to be useless like so many Portuguese players did at Besiktas, we won't have lost very much, although I doubt that will be the case.

If that was Chelsea, they would of got at least £15m for him. What is with us selling our players on the cheap?! He was one of the best players in the Portuguese league last season, still at a decent age and on his day one of the best wingers around.

I don't understand why we don't keep him. He'd still be our best winger and most creative player if we played him.

4.5m is just robbery, nothing else.

That transfer fee is awful. It's the kind of money you pay for nothing players. An honest price for Nani should be somewhere around €9m, minimum.

It's not like he had a bad season or anything. Even with the wages it shouldn't be that low. High wages are natural for clubs that play in shit leagues like Turkey/Greece/Russia because that's the only way to convince a former star to put up with the fact that they're nothing but garbage. Same thing used to apply to Chelsea and Man City, but they have now risen to the level where they don't need to go over the top to keep their players.
