I know the narrative from Romano and others is we aint spending in January and I know Amorim told Neville the same. However I think this is a smokescreen, so as not to alert the masses and Utd tax go on transfers. Just picking from highlights from other premier teams (I dont watch much football from foreign leagues) these are examples that wouldnt break the bank as in £70-80 mill+ players.

We have to address multiple problems, but in my opinion we desperately need a LWB in January. Robinson would be a good pick
We also need a striker. Someone experienced. Doesnt have to be an Osiman, as even someone like for example Chris Wood, would automatically be better than what we have now and Rasmus can learn things even from him.
I also think we need a driving force from the CM. Soucek or Doucoure would instantly make our midfield better.
I'm not saying we will get these players, just examples of small steps and we dont need to sign WC players, because they wouldnt want to come here anyway, at this time. Just players to make us a bit better and avoid getting in a relegation fight and then we can look at other positions in the summer.

Both wingbacks and striker
This.

Energetic and physical midfielder(s)
Striker who knows how to score goals
Wingback

In that order

Wingbacks need to be top imo. They seem to be the main thing we are missing for Amorim's system in terms of players we just haven't got (creating a 5221 instead of 3421). Striker second, because creating chances hasn't been our problem - scoring them has. Centre mid upgrades can wait for the summer.

ST
CM
LWB

We need an actual striker that can score goals pronto

We need someone next to Ugarte in midfield, someone as aggressive and energetic but with more quality on the ball

A new LWB, we can have Dalot in RWB, not because he is good there, but because I am prioritizing the LWB more.

Amad should be RWB, new signings at LWB and LAM

As a temporary solution Amad at RWB and a new LWB, new CM and new ST are the priority, it's not like we have good 10s, but a CM is far more important than a LAM/RAM and ST is absolutely first priority, if you ask me who we sign if it's only in one position then it's ST.

CF, #10 who can dribble and attack from the left side, replace Casemiro with better cover for Ugarte.

LWB
RWB
CF.

Pretty straightforward really, weather it's achievable or not is a different matter.

Immediately:
LWB
Left 10
Striker

Further Ahead:
Aerially dominant LCB who can progress the ball and press high
Another CM
Young talented backup keeper who can usurp Onana

Strikers, give us an actual goal scoring threat.

This.

Midfielders for me. The game is won or lost in midfield and our midfield has been crap for a very very long time now. We need to sort that out. We have options in wingback (Dalot, Maz, Amad) albeit not very good one but we don’t have much options other than Ugarte/Mainoo in midfield.

Boring option - 2 wingbacks and a striker.

Exciting option - 3 attackers

Striker, LWB and a powerful CM.
We can make do with Amad at RWB if there more depth at 10(Bruno, Eriksen, Mason, I'd even give Zirkzee a chance there in the interim).

Can't believe anyone thinks we don't need a number nine
I can't believe anyone thinks that shoving someone else up front is going to fix anything. You only need to look at how much Haaland has been struggling recently for proof that it won't. If the rest of the team isn't working, you can be probably the best number nine on the planet and still look like a donkey who offers nothing to the team when not scoring goals. A proper left-sided wing back and another central midfielder with some legs will do more for this team than a new number nine. Which isn't to say that Hojlund doesn't need help, but it will do no good if those other problems aren't addressed.

I'd probably go LWB, midfielder and a #10. We're desperate for a few players who are combative, have good ball carrying abilities and are comfortable with the ball in tight spaces so that's what we should prioritise.

It's tempting to say a striker when Hojlund and Zirkzee aren't scoring enough goals but it might be beneficial for us long-term to establish the principles of play Amorim wants in build up first. Osimhen is probably the only striker of enough quality who might be available in January and even he would likely cost money we don't have right now.

It's more than three, but in January we need two wingbacks for certain, and I reckon a fast, tall, young left sided CB.

Attackers can be bought in the summer, if Amorim proves he can make his system work.

We might not score a shit ton in the second half of the season, but we'd surely see if we were on the right track. Patching up a shit team and system with a cracking striker fixes nothing.

What's wrong with Ugarte, Amad, Mazraoui, de Ligt, Mainoo, Yoro, all good enough to be part of the squad, Hojlund would be a good backup for a well functioning team.

Defence Midfield and Attack
The only correct answer.

Really 3-4-3 needs binning the most because, among other things, we actually have decent centre backs now for a 4-3-3 or whatever.

We need:-
A menacing, gamechanging wide forward (or 10 if we're staying with this stupid formation)
A mobile central midfielder who can control tempo and occasionally arrive in the box
A full-back (wing-back etc) with a great engine who can play both sides of the game, attack and defence

Left wing back ( buy back Alvarro)
new centre forward
defensive Midfielder to coplimernt /cover for Ugarte
