Four signings...lining up something like this...

No number 10, no Rodriguez. I don't think Mkhitaryan is a winger tbh I think he's probably better as a 10 but I think it's about the best option for now (and it works on the right as Valencia is good at getting forward so Mkhitaryan can drift inside). On the left Perisic is more of an atacking threat and Darmian is stronger defensively I think I have balance on both sides.

Lindelof - a better partner for Bailly than Jones/Rojo or Smalling.
Fabinho - no room for Fellaini, Carrick getting past his best...add a midfield engine with a bit of steel that we need.
Morata - a proper number 9. A goalscoring threat - only Messi had a better goals/min ratio last season - will that translate to being a starter in PL?
Perisic - an actual winger! Because currently we have none. Fast, dynamic, direct.

4 signings I'd be delighted with. Any comments on this as a starting 11?

Well I appreciate your feedback but my opinion differs quite a bit. Zlatan was not mobile enough and he missed a lot of sitters. He should actually have scored more and we could have turned some of those draws into 3 points. And I think Perisic is far better than Martial and Mkhitaryan as a winger right now. I don't think Mkhitaryan or Martial are wingers. One is a ten (not our best 10 - that's Mata) and one is a striker, so Perisic as a specialist winger is an improvement. Mkhitaryan still makes my team as a winger because we have poor choices on the wing.

I think Perisic is an incredibly underwhelming player. We need a Sanchez or Hazard level talisman in our attack, that's what we are really missing. That's what wins titles.

We lacked that last year and Perisic wouldn't change that at all.

And not 1 British player in that lineup, no thank you, we are not Man City, a mixture is key, at least Shaw for Darmian in there and Rashford too

Can't play British players just because they are British. They're not good enough to start. It's up to them to change that.

If we can't add a top level 10 like griezmann then this is the only way to go. Whether it's fabinho or someone else doesn't bother me. This can free up Pogba nicely and we can finally see some top form out of him, while solidifying the middle of the pitch.

So, if we were average for a top 5 club and had missed 40 chances, we'd have had 10 more goals, 64 total and so still scored 13-22 less the other top 6 teams.

I don't think this is unsolvable. We got little from our LBs going forward and it looks like we should be getting a better passer to take some of Smalling, Rojo and Jones' minutes. Fellaini + Carrick played 3200 minutes and we might well sign a better CM who can help us create more chances to attack with that time. Lingard and Rooney combined for 2900 minutes and you have to think that if we sign James, Perisic, Douglas Costa or whoever they will be more dangerous. On the other hand, we might get less from our 9 with Zlatan having played well.

But we're probably still a good bet to finish no higher than 4th or 5th out of the top 6 in goals next year, which means we'll have to be incredible defensively (like 20 goals conceded) to win the title.

It's football, you can't just apply maths like that.

Firstly, our problem was drawing games, those 10 goals could well mean 20 points (title challenging).

Second, there's the old "floodgates open". If those parked buses we often faced conceded they would be forced to come out and that would result in more goals so for every one of those extra goals you arrived at arithmetically we may well have got 1 or 2 more at times.

Third, you are only looking at GF and not GA. I would happily score a few goals less than City or Liverpool as they couldn't defend to save their lives at times.

I don't think we will sign him as we are not linked. However the following scenario always happens: where we miss out on a great player when he was available for cheap and now he is worth much much more and I believe this will happen again in a few years with Sandro Ramirez. He is available for 8 million euros. Will move to Athletico or another club like Dortmund and then will light it up and will be worth 70 million euros. Why don't we sign him this summer. He had a brilliant season with Malaga with a similar league scoring rate as Morata and if he fails won't hurt as he is cheap.

Looks good to me. Either that or a 4231. I'd say if Jose gets a good offer for Darmian then he may just go for a new left back too once his priority signing areas have been addressed.

Yeah 4-2-3-1 is an option. I think more likely if we get James then we play him as a ten. Then I'd put Pogba and Herrera behind and not bother with Fabinho. Not sure either that or Pogba and Fabinho. But then Herrera did have a good season.

It is actually an unbalanced team...too defensive.

Having two wide players in Mkkitaryan and Perisic who are very good in defensive contribution means Fabinho is wasted. Morata is also a dynamic player; he has no problem providing a good shape to the team.

Playing 3 in midfield makes much more sense if you are playing fullbacks and wide players that do not defend that much.

Replace Fabinho with Griezmann or James for a 4-2-3-1. Alternatively replace Darmian and Perisic for more attacking wide players (ie. Rose and Sanchez) to keep a 4-3-3.

2 might be a good point. I'm not sure what the stats are on teams scoring more or less goals when up a goal (anyone know?), but you would think a counter-attacking Mourinho side might score more goals when up then when drawing or chasing.

You can still win a title with enough 1-0s, but it's a real slim margin of error. Maybe next year we'll have bad luck defensively and give up 35-40 goals just because a few wonder goals or slips cost us.
 
Cool. So Morata is the new Griezman?

Nice to see everyone wants a player who plays an avarage of 47 minutes a game. 80Mio? No prob.

Someone please name a player who's in the same league as Griezmann and is remotely attainable. This transfer window will likely be a monumental disappointment from the looks of things.

I'd be disappointed with that side

not sure Perisic or Morata have what it takes to address our goal scoring issues

Darmian at left back too ain't good
