Mystery Player

The story is basically "Ferguson may sign someone in some position at sometime somewhere somehow"

Tottenham looking to spend millions on a forward from Spain....Rossi, LLorente, Negredo or Forlan and trying to get Adam. I say Modric...

Mark Ogden of the telegraph has twittered a story linking us with Ashley Young. Could see that happening, would give us options and would fit in with recent recruitment, like Valencia, Carrick etc.

I'd like it to be Sanchez and hope it isn't Young. But we don't know, do we?

My reading is that he's talking about coming to an agreement with someone he trusts to keep it. Whelan comes to mind as an example. Zoggy would be a fit, in that Whelan might say 'we have to try and stay up this season, but by the end we'll know where we stand and how we have to spend the money'. I wouldn't say no to Zoggy anyway.

Daily Mirror saying the player is Ashley Young, claiming we had a £15 million bid rejected in January. They also say Bale is our number 1 transfer target.

I think its a left winger. It seems to me as the one obvious gap in our squad.

Potential candidates would be bale and young. Added bonus of being home grown

I'd rather pay £30m for Bale than £15m for Young. Anyway, won't Nani be our left winger when Valencia returns? It's central midfield that needs looking at more.

Bale would involve an auction with some big bids indeed, from big clubs, and I can't see Villa letting Young go easily. If Fergie's quote is to be believed he's talking about a club and a player that is ready for sale.

How is that 'clear as day'?

I think it's Charlie Adam, to sell shirts in Asda.

I'm not sure weight watchers could afford a commercial deal with Adam ;)

For Fergie to have felt we "had a chance" of a deal in January, it'd have to be a club willing to sell for the right price and whom we are not in direct competition with. Box ticked. "all parties felt it wasn't the right time" would suggest the interest is long standing and all parties are happy to do it when ready. Box ticked on the grounds that Bruce confirmed SAF enquired about him, Henderson and Sunderland would not be quite ready yet in mid-season, the age of the player, and Bent going. It'd also have to be a club/gaffer SAF trusts not to let the cat out the bag or cry foul, again Bruce and Sunderland fit the bill ahead of any foreign clubs or the likes of Spurs.

nani on the left is an option, but his best form has come on the right side.

Of course it may be a central midfielder. But i think that will hinge on scholes. If he stays for another year I can see fergie stick with ando fletch and carrick until then.

Bale would cost near to, or over, 40m at the moment I reckon. Young would give us options both in a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3. I'd take them both. Obviously, if you could have one it would be Bale but realistically Young is a more likely transfer.

It's certainly one I could see the sense in. He's not a signing that's necessarily exciting but he's proven to a good standard at premiership level and is typical of those made by the club in recent years. I think, just like Valencia has, that he would do a good job for us.

Andy Carroll panic buy or not...cost £35m. Bale isn't going any where for less than what Chelsea paid for Torres not that I'd pay that sort of money...Ashley Young or Sanchez seem more likely than that.

Young's contract ends in 2012 so Villa wouldn't have much choice if he wanted to go. Dunno why but I think this one, ie the Young rumours, has legs.

That's how I read it too. I picked Wigan, but Sunderland would make sense as well.

Is Valencia now a backup player then?

I think Fergie will want to bed someone in for a year whilst Scholes is still win us to enable them to slot in once he leaves.

One trade-off of players on deadline day doesn't inflate every transfer by £20m in the summer window.

He's not a 'backup' but none of the players now will play in all the games. Personally, I still think we need someone else who is primarily an attacking wideman.

Exiting times whoever it may be, Fergie must be confident that we'll sign whoever this player is otherwise he wouldn't of done that interview

Most pointless thread today? What the hell are we discussing? The article brought pretty much nothing to the table:boring: :boring: :boring: :boring:

Article confirms that ferguson has identified the player he wants to sign. We are discussing who that potential player may be or the type of player he is looking for.

obviously the thread was not boring enough to keep you out of it

Or not. Without names, it really doesn't say anything. He can sign anybody in the summer and said "This is the one I referred to back in January/February." Meh.

I am hoping it's Alexis Sanchez, he was a player that got a lot of interest in January but clubs were told to wait until June, and we have been linked with him for two years at least.

My fear is it's Ashley Young, he's ok but not special and would seem a squad purchase.

I've seen most of Sunderland's games this season and Henderson is nowhere near being ready for United, as soon as the light of the media shone on him he started to weaken and really adds nothing to what we already have.

I think it is David de Gea.

I sincerely hope it is not Charlie Adam. That would be disastrous.

Yeah, with Berba and Rooney in the team we have more than enough receding hairlines already. We'd never win the 'prettiest first 11' if we add Charlie Adam. Add to that I dont think he'd add anything to the squad better than what we have.
