I think people just misunderstood what he was after and how it would benefit him. To begin with it was just funny that he took a platform that used to be serious, but had issues, and turned into an absolute shitfest that people thought would die out.

I mean, I wouldn't buy a tesla now because of musk, and there are better options if you are not reliant on public charging, but ostracising people for it seems a bit grim. Your point makes sense if the things you mention about Porsche, Volkswagen and Fiat were current realities but they are not. The reaction to Tesla is fairly normal and predictable, the same way a similar reaction in the early 20th century about Volkswagen, Porsche, Renault(who was expropriated by the french government for its support of Germany) or Fiat would be normal and predictable.
Anyone purchasing a Tesla when Elon Musk was posting shit like "We coup who we want" doesn't get to hide behind shit like "awh jeez, we didn't know he was a bad dude". He's always been a cnut and nobody with a conscience should have been doing business with him.

Not saying it's the right thing to do but this definitely hurts Musk himself. If no people buy Tesla's anymore because they'd get destroyed in the streets, Tesla shares would drop immensely, making Musk less wealthy.
Whether or not that is the way to go about it, billionaires need to understand that they can and will be held accountable for what they do and if the government doesn't live up to that, people will not just stand there and watch.
