Muppet Time: Young or Bale

I don't think Adam is good enough for us. I'd rather try someone like M'Villa or Banega but the latter has never been linked with us.

I was thinking about this earlier, him not being good enough for us, I thought that surely if he was that inspirational for Blackpool, they wouldn't have gone down and then couldn't think of another player we'd bought from a club that had been relegated who had made any significant impact for us (therefore Alan Smith from Leeds doesn't count as he wasn't entirely successful at United).

And then I remembered him;

Personally - neither.
Welbeck and Cleverly are coming back, and though neither is as good as Bale, and don't really have the pace of young either, they could do a job on the wings if required.

That and we do have Valencia and Nani as first choice, with Park coming in for the tough games.

Like it's been said I'd rather go for two top class central midfield signings whom we can build on over the next few years.

Yeah but that's just it; 'if required'. Preferably not, they might be good squad players but neither are good enough to be in the first team (yet anyway) over the likes of Carrick and Rooney who play in their respective areas of the field. Were we to buy a Sneijder, would they be better than him?

If the Barcelona game has shown us, their team is littered with home-grown stars, yes but they are almost similar to the 1995-99 United teams who were peppered with home-grown stars, these were the glory years of the home-grown talent. Barcelona have also been supplemented greatly with expensive stars over the years, their youth academy is far more extensive than most other clubs anywhere, maybe even Ajax's from the early 90's.

For every Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, there are countless others who haven't made the grade and they have to buy the likes of Villa and Mascherano, Pique, Abidal etc to plug the gaps.

Personally, I feel this is Barca's Golden Generation and whilst they'll always have great home-grown players, perhaps none as good as this for some time. Puyol and Xavi will slow down soon and already there's a good portion of the backbone gone and they'll have to revert to having to buy expensive stars like Romario, Ronaldo, De Boer, Rivaldo, Overmars, Ronaldinho etc to re-plug these gaps.

United have a bunch of kids coming through in the form of Morrison (if he stays out of Strangeways), Pogba, Keane and King who look extremely promising, these kids are being talked about at great lengths as much as the Class of '92. No United prospect have been this hyped since the likes of Beckham et al which considering we've had successful internationals like Fletcher, Brown, O'Shea come through in the interim is a big plus.

But we need to integrate them slowly and surely, we cannot throw them in. If they are good enough, they will play, like Rafael and Fabio. They didn't need to go out on loan and they were eighteen when they broke through, Welbeck and Cleverly have been playing for a good number of seasons now and something tells me neither are United worthy unfortunately, not that they're not good players. If we want to compete with Barca, we need the very, very best of our home-grown players along with the experienced, expensive established stars like Sneijder who can make an instant impact...

Young is better value for money.

Bale seems to be quite injury prone and at 40 million he's massively overpriced.

For that much money we could make a genuine bid for Fabregas...

Of course, that's another point of view. But I don't know what SAF will finally do.. is he going to buy big and buy lots, or just the one big buy,or, most likely, a mix?

if it were an out and out choice, I would rather buy young; Bale will cost at least thrice as much and will probably be crocked quite often - that's the pity, that lad is built for speed, so he's going to be down once in a while.

But he's 21...if we have him for ten-twelve years and he plays to a consistently high level for at least two-thirds of that period, the money will be well invested.

I'm not even sure he'd cost that much, may be more, maybe less but he's an exciting talent and one who's proven he can do it against the biggest teams.

True... It would be a sight to behold, Bale and Nani/Valencia tearing up the wings... and Hernandez's pace up front. it's just that I'm very unsure if spurs are going to let him go. Or for that matter, Modric.

Spurs have proven for years they'll let their best assets go for the right price, Gascoigne, Barmby, Carrick, Defoe, Berbatov etc .

Not being in the Champions League will be a minus for the more ambitious of the Spurs players...

Even though the Bale hype reached ridiculous proportions I still think he is a fantastic player. And he will get better and better. I would take Bale for £40m without hesitation over a £20m Young. Who although I like and think he will be a good addition. He certainly isn’t my top of my list.

Young
Because he is a versatile and very good "week in week out" player "probably" available at a reasonable price (Value!). And, I do think he's going to grow with the task, and develope further here with us. His personality and skills would fit us well, and I think Manchester United would fit him well.

Bale is a great player with a huge talent but is less versatile, very expensive and injury prone. He thus represents a greater risk. Too great a risk...

Not neccesarily, it means he's changed his position to suit a more natural one.

It's like saying Paul Scholes used to be a striker, but now he's a midfielder - Versatile.

Fabio is more versatile than Bale.

The versatility is a result of the player's skills more than the positions he has held. Isn't it so?
