Muppet Time: Young or Bale

Neither. Bale is not worth the money and Young is just solid. I can think of a few I'd rather see us go for that fit somewhere between the prices stated. If we want a young squad option maybe that Taarabt would be ok for around £8M.

A. Young for £15-20m

Simply because I couldn't justify spending £40m on Bale. We could end up with a Torres situation. Big money, big pressure and an incredible amount of hype to live up to. Even though Bale is more likely what we need on the wing with his natural left footed ability. Young's versatility for that price would represent a wise use of transfer funds, which would be better served on a top class midfielder.

Without discussing our economy too much, which most of us have lacking knowledge in, I'd pick Bale. My main concern is the quality of the team.

I like both players. Bale would be my player of choice as I would like to see a naturally left-sided player come in. He is likely to be ridiculously overpriced though so I would rather have Young for a decent price if Fergie thinks we need to add to what we already have.

Neither - they're not footballers, they're just athletes.

We need some bloody good footballers in the middle

Young.

But Bale is better and would cost double.

We need that big money to replace Scholes right now.

Personally I wouldn't spend more than £20million on monkeyboy.

So its going to have to be Young.

Neither. I want us to go for someone technically better than Young and Bale is too expensive.

Some of the responses are interesting and whilst none are 'incorrect' or 'correct' (they're just opinions), the questions I have are why are people so bothered about the money? It's not ours to spend, if United were willing to spend it, then why not?

Also, people kept bringing up neither when we need it for a central midfielder. I was talking purely about the left-wing, and if United have over £100m to spend and are willing to, then why can't we buy in both areas?

Another thing is if we agree Bale is a better left winger but Young is a better squad player, why should we choose a player who'd be less beneficial to the starting XI? Yes a good flexible squad is required throughout a season, but at the end of the day it's eleven v eleven in each game.

because schweini and sneijder would cost 80 million to buy, 20 for a keeper, and we won't have anything left for a left winger. what's why we can't buy in both areas. :D

bale with thiago Alacante supplying the through balls,

That's largely because he doesn't actually exist.

Alcantara, maybe?

Or perhaps, Alicante - the Spanish city.

Bale

He got stick of never being on a winning side and being a flop, now he's turned it around he's being branded overhyped :wenger:

He's had about as good an 18 months as Nani has had for us and has the potential to be a world beater. Young is somewhat meh imo

Having said that I'd prefer Sanchez over either of them not that I believe we need any wingers full stop so spend the money on Sniejder and Modric instead

Him!

You can tell he's watched plenty of him and all, Alacante and Alcantara are very similar to be fair.

I don't think we can have BOTH Modric and Sneijder and personally, I don't think there's anything wrong in having Valencia, Nani and Bale as our wingers in our squad. Giggs is clearly a central midfielder these days (of which are dwindling) leaving really only Park who I rate as a workhorse but not as a creative player, so having Valencia and Nani who can both play right-wing and Nani and Bale who can both play left wing is highly beneficial for a season when you have three top quality effective wingers.

And Bale can also play left-back of course if required, meaning in a tricky European game, you could play Park or Giggs for industry on the left whilst having sufficient wing play from Bale/Evra if they play LB...

Bale is not a good left back, yeah you can put him there but then it's likely you'll concede. As for this thread, I wouldn't want either. Young is average and you could get better players for £40m who would improve us more than Bale, including one of his team mates.

First off, there's no way anyone would pay £40m for Peter Crouch, so don't go there girl.

And there's no-one at Spurs worth £40m, certainly not Modric who I suspect you refer to.

If you're gonna pay that much or close to that much, then Sneijder is a better option that Modric.

As for Bale at LB, he is definitely effective there, more so than most other PL LB's (discounting Cole and Evra) and it's noticeable that Roberto Carlos was long considered the world's best left-back without really defending very much...

Yeah no one is worth £40m at Spurs, but considering Modric is their best player and they don't want to sell, it's a realistic price. I'm not saying lets buy him for £40m, I'm just saying he's an example of a player who I would rather the club paid that amount for than spend it on Bale.

I'd love Sneijder and he is a better player than Modric, but Modric is more a of a central midfielder whereas Sneijder is an excellent creative player but operates best in a free role. I wouldn't say no to either personally, but if we bought Sneijder then I'd still think we could do with a central midfielder.

I'd actually prefer, were we to buy Sneijder, to supplement him with both Carrick and a new defensive midfield.

Carrick can shepherd the defence reasonably well, but as we have seen, can be left exposed against a better team. That's why (and I find it a bit 'cautious' saying this) that Charlie Adam may be a good purchase. Having Adam who can tackle, can pass, can take set-pieces and has a high energy level can provide both Carrick and a player like Sneijder the freedom to roam, plus he does have goals in him himself. You'd be able to pick Adam up for around £10-12m and at 27 provides good value as well as the chance to remain close to where he resides now in Lancashire.

If Fergie wanted to play a 4-5-1 cautiously away against a big European side in next season's CL, he could play three centre midfielders who can pass, tackle and attack with two wingers rather than one winger and one utility flanker, and feel comfortable...
