Mrs Brown's Boys Voted Best Sitcom of 21st Century

I'm gonna be in for some abuse here but I actually quite enjoy watching the show with my dad. No way it should be at the top of any best of lists though, especially when it's beating shows like the Office and The Thick of It.

Why are these "of the Century" lists coming out at the seemingly arbitrary point of 16 years in? Why not at least wait for 20?

Great clickbait material, people for whatever reason like to see what makes these lists and if they agree. Then they either debate it on the websites that post them, or create threads on other websites to debate the list, which in turn creates some more clicks for the original website.

People do like lists.

It usually annoys me when Brits and the British media claim something or someone from Ireland.

But not today.

I'd like to ad it didn't start out as a radio play in 2011. Brendan o Carroll was popping out direct to DVD films once every 22 days back in the noughties.

The BBC are chief producers of the show so it can be in a list of British shows.

I hate Gervais as well. But the people in this thread who claim the US office is better than the Uk one are just as bad as the people who voted Mrs Browns Boys.

The US office is a heartfelt and full series which is funny enough. The U.K. Office is one of the best things ever.

I like the US Office and Carrell is great in it. It is still an American show though and they take things way over the top. The Office UK was understated and wasn't flogged to death.

I really like Detectorists because it is so understated and gentle. Are their any American comedies in a similar vein?

correct.

I was going to make a part two of my "What happened to British TV?" thread the other day about sitcoms. I think this has emphasized the need for it.

Two decent ones on iPlayer at the moment in Fleabag and People Just Do Nothing. I don't know if they're actually on TV as well or online only, but they're a million times better than shit like Mrs. Brown's Boys

Come on. I wouldn't go that far at all. A lot of people genuinely got turned off by Gervais, I must admit I didn't like the UK Office first when I saw it when I was still in school. I found it absolutely hilarious when I started working in an office.

  1. The Office
  2. The IT Crowd
  3. The Thick of It
  4. Peep Show
  5. Black Books
  6. The Inbetweeners
In no particular order, but those are the only decent comedies on the list.

Admittedly though, I've never seen these 5.

  1. Peter Kay’s Car Share
  2. Count Arthur Strong
  3. Miranda
  4. Raised by Wolves
  5. Detectorists

I do like Mrs Brown boys, but I would not have it over the 1st series of Benidorm, Gavin and Stacey or Inbetweeners

Never been a fan of it to be honest, Still Game is much funnier...

Surely the US office isn't actually better than the original though, and its four main characters? I've only seen bits and pieces of it, it seems a perfectly decent sitcom, but the Gervais/ Merchant show was one of the best pieces of television ever written.

The Office was fecking shite. Never got the love for it.

I understood why it was popular but it never really did it for me. Coogan is far superior.

Would a round number really make a difference?

Hard to compare them really, which is weird because they're essentially the same show. The first season of the US Office simply mimicked the original, and it was ropey. In Season 2, it became it's own thing with a totally different dynamic. Gervais' opposite number was more of a lovable idiot than a reprehensible human being. I'm a big fan of both.

I don't get the whole "I don't like Ricky Gervais" as a reason to not like The Office. It shouldn't matter. You're not supposed to like David Brent anyway.

  17. Yonderland
  18. Twenty Twelve/W1A
  19. Benidorm
  20. Detectorists
I've never seen an entire episode of the ones in bold. I've actually never even heard of some one them (number 3, 4, 9 and 20) and I watch a fair bit of telly.
Have only heard of 9 shows and only seen The Office, The Thick of It, Peep Show, Black Books and The Inbetweeners. Also seen Detectorists and think you should give it a go. They're on Netflix, at least that's where I discovered it.

I'm a massive fan of the UK version(Although I think the two series of The Royal Family just beats it overall as the greatest UK sitcom)but I agree that the US show(From season 2 right up to when Michael leaves)is just as good as the original.

The biggest problem for me with the US version is that there's no reason for it to be a documentary(Parks & Rec has this problem as well). The style does'nt fit at all and feels tacked on. One of the great thing about the original UK version was that it felt and looked like an incredibly boring BBC 2 documentary.

I would not place it in the top 15,000 , dreadful program.
Forgot about Peep Show. Has to be Peep Show.

But yeah I'd agree, never really watched more than one or two episodes though because of how shite it is.

What's great about that?
Not to be too wanky about it but it gave the show an added ''atmosphere''. Case in point being the times in the show when it looks like the camera crew have caught something by complete accident.

. Scotch Egg scene

. Catching Garth going off with the couple on the bike

. The first kiss between Tim and Dawn

. Brent telling Chris Finch to feck off.

Those moment's felt great because as the viewer you feel like your getting the character honest opinion(As they don't their being filmed) rather than the reality which is just some very good script writing. Even if you take away all the jokes from The Office, it's still an interesting show to watch.

I genuinely can't get through the advert for mrs browns boys, I have to change the channel for that, and that lasts 20 seconds.

Is that a list of only British sitcoms?

My favourite of this century is Modern Family, by a very comfortable distance.

If we are talking about recent US stuff, Always Sunny in Philadelphia is awesome. Eastbound and Down had some great moments as well.

Modern Family started well but got mediocre pretty quickly.
