Most popular sportsman.

Nobody said tendulkar was more popular (or even as popular) than Beckham
But after beckham he would be a good contender for 2nd spot
certainly ahead of any baseball numpty

And not one person has claimed a baseball player as the most known athlete. You just went into typical anti-American mode and picked an American sport to bash.

Just because China is obsessed with voting him into all star games, doesnt means he's popular world wide

The NBA is on the global market not just a handful of nations (even though I don't care for the league/sport). I'd wager more people know Yao globally than any NFL, MLB or NHL player.

Actually it does..
China's population is almost 4 times to that of the U.S..That's a significant figure in terms of popularity!
So if somoene is popular in the whole of China/India, it means that they're definitely in with a shout of being most known throughout the world just based on population figures!
1.3 Billion just in China...that is A LOT

That's regional popularity and just becase two nations comprise 1/4 of the world's population does not equate to global popularity. Beckham, Ronaldo (R9), Zidane, Pele, Jordan, Ali, Woods - they do. They are globally known. I bet OJ Simpson is globally known, although not for his sporting prowess. ;)

Still more people know Michael Jordan, I have no doubts about that

you claimed baseball is more famous and more of a sport than cricket
thus i replied back
nothing wrong with that.
If you try n bash cricket for baseball you should know what to expect

I never claimed it was more famous. I claimed cricket is shit. I stand by that. Both sports are quite boring.

Actually mate..

The population of India is more than Europe and US/Canada combined.... :)

Europe's estimated to be 728 Million, while US/Canada add another 330 Million..
India's 1.15 Billion....
So even if you combine those groups of Europe and Us/Canada, they still don't outnumber the group of India alone, let alone Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka!!

Oh, just another thing, can we also add the 25 million Indians who are residing OUTSIDE of India to that figure?
Thank you very much

Go figure.

ORLY?

My post was exactly about this as irrelevant to our debate. The most popular means for me that many various groups enjoy it. Otherwise we can name Yao Ming the most popular sportsman and thread could be closed.

Well, I was just claiming popularity based on numbers and numbers alone as I stated.......

I put Peiterson as my cricket pick and I stand by that - it sounds like I might be wrong but then again this is a thread that asks for opinions and I that's what I've given.

As I said, he strikes me as a hugely famous cricketer because of various different factors in and out of his sport (like a pound-shop Beckham). But as I say, just my opinion and it sounds like I could be wrong.

What I don't agree with, from all you guys who seem to be personally insulted that I am not kneeling at the alter of Tendulka, is that you have claimed that he is some unknown outside of England. That is simply nonsense. He is a world class cricketer and like any decent cricket fan knows who Tendulka is, any decent cricket fan knows who Peiterson is.

your wrong

Peiterson is on the same level as Michael clarke

Sachin, Ponting, Lara are all on a different level (ponting slightly lower then the other two)

Any decent cricket fan who knows who tendulka is probably would know who peiterson is... but the idea is the nevilles of cricket watching have no idea who peiterson is but know who Tendulka is.

Peiterson is a celebrity of English cricket like Michael Clarke is of Australian cricket.

I would consider Gilchrist and Warne above Peiterson as well.

Exactly. Any decent cricket fan would know peiterson, but even the non-decent fans know Sachin.

i have only ever heard of yao, there seems to be alot of yanks in this thread

i hate to tell you
no one knows anything about or even cares about american football and basketball

and no one here in the US cares what anyone else in the world thinks about football and basketball. and you're wrong on basketball. it has really taken off world wide. the playing field has really been evened out in the past decade. it's gotten to the point where the US isn't even dominant in int'l competitions like they were. just look at the all-star teams of the past 10 years, almost half are foreign players. even regular teams are almost half foreigners.

first of all, cricket came first baseball later
so it is not based on the concept of baseball
rather baseball is based on the concept of cricket
but typical of the lazy yanks here, you removed most of the athletic part of the sport and then claim it doesn't take athletic prowess
try bowling 10 overs in the sun at full pace and lets see what happens
and before telling me to feck off to my own land, you should probably hand the land back to its original occupants first

MANIFEST DESTINY SON!!

cricket and baseball are both crap.. deal?

but this is just my personal view. i'm not stupid enough to bash a sport and say it sucks as if it was a fact. all sports have its good and bad aspects. i love soccer and basketball, but there are structural flaws in the games themselves as well as the way it is played currently.

I have been to a baseball game once. The game alone was a bit long and lacked tempo. But from my estimation 90% of the crowd didn´t care about the game actually. Or maybe they did but there is so much free time during the game that you have to do something else (like to sing a song about cracker Jack or whatever peanuts) and it is more like a combined social event with some sport performance. People seemed to have a fun and a good time.

Do they sing at cricket game too?

Well in reality most American fans have no clue how to cheer until the cheerleaders or jumbotrons tell us too. We are a very lazy society expecting instant entertainment. If not we become mellow. Attending a baseball game (which I refuse to on grounds of their constant arrogance and greed) is basically a family day or day out with the fellas or coworkers. It's a leisure time activity. When I did attend games as a kid I watched every pitch but as I got older I was more interested in the ladies in the crowd and talking smack with my boys. To me baseball is the most unique sport.

What boggles my mind is how my fellow Americans can say soccer is boring and not enough action (?) yet will sit through a three-hour plus baseball game which has less activity than a two hour soccer match. And then there is car racing - what is entertaining about watching cars go in circles?

That's a bunch of bull, maybe it's you who pay a little extra attention to the cheerleaders after all the Cowboy cheerleaders are damn sexy and worth watching. I do find it odd that there are people who can watch a baseball game everyday for a 162 games and find other sports boring, I mean these guys spend three hours a day all summer filling in a box score pathetic

No it's not Alex. There are plenty of American sports fans that can't be arsed to do shit during a game but sit on their ass, drink beer and stuff their mouths with food while paying little attention to the game. Have you once been an American sporting event (not counting soccer matches or college football) where the crowd sings songs and chants?

At Avs game, you can hear the feck the Redwings chant everynight regardless of opponent.

Broncos games are always loud as hell as well.

Oh I have also been to a few Duke basketball games when I lived in the South, you obviously havent seen one, the crowd is alive there as anywhere

This is the standard chant for most American sports..

" Go (insert team name here) go"
or " Let's go (insert team name here)"

The originality of these chants are further highlighted with the ever brilliant
" Deeee fense...Deee Fense....deee Fense" chants

Let's not forget the half time shows, the pop corn, and the jugs of beer.
and of course, the music played through the P.A system (which is unfortunately creeping into the English game as well)

Football: George Best
Rugby: JPR Williams
Cricket: Ian Botham
Golf: Jack Nicklaus
Baseball: This is Rounders for men so doesn't count!
Basketball: This is Netball for men so doesn't count!
American Football: This is Rugby League but played by pouffs covered in padding!
Tennis: Bjorn Borg
Boxing: Muhammad Ali

Also the commentators saying " Are you kidding me!!!" for every good play they see

You're both wrong.

It's fecking Tendulkar.

And Pietersen, but no one cares about him.
