Most popular sportsman.

I'd say that to be considered the most popular sportsperson in the world, the certain sportsman has to be recognized virtually everywhere.

And that would be Michael Jordan and David Beckham.

They are not unless you are talking only about west.

It's impossible to define who is the most popular sportsman if the East plays different sports than the West and have no clue about the western sports.

WTF? I don't know a single person in the US that follows cricket. And I never once argued for Favre or ARod - those sports are largely unrecognized globally. I really don't know any nation in the wester Hemisphere that follow cricket but then again I think it's a shit sport and I don't follow it so I don't know much about its following. Football is played in every nation around the world so obviously a footballer is going to be more recognized than any other club/team sports person.

The most recognized individual is probably the Pope. Or Pres Bush or Bin Laden (not necessarily for good reasons either).

I am in the states, I follow cricket
Mehro is in the states, he follows cricket

thats 2 in a minute

Go to New jersey and see.
Did you now the US have a cricket team (An absolute crap one but they do)

I watch the cricket highlights on sky sports (but I have no idea whats going on or how the game is played)

When i went to school in long island a bunch of kids played cricket daily in one of the quads

its a gazillion times better than baseball, and you need real skill to play it, not steroids

its really simple to follow

if you follow baseball it wont take much effort to understand cricket

I dont understand the scores

they can have dashes numbers and letters

but ive figured out that wickets are good?

Wickets mean how many players out
you get 10 players per side per innings to bat
so if you loose 1 wicket you have 9 more players left

in a 1 day game every side gets 50 overs (each over has 6 balls)to bat
the bowling (pitching for you) team bowls those 50 overs
obviously if you loose all your 10 wickets before the end of the 50 overs you lost a great opportunity and are wank (a tendency of our stupid Indian cricket team)

at the end of the game whichever side made the highest runs wins

thats the gist of it

 That is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard on this forum. Cricket is basically the same concept as baseball. Both don't take much athletic prowess to play but you will find all are good athletes. Typical anti-American sport comment there. Who saw that one coming. Yawn. If you don't like American sports then feck back off to your own land.

You can't compare cricket with baseball. Cricket involves stamina and technique. Not just swinging and missing and no gloves to catch the ball either. Baseball stretches the definition of sport. There's a reason why only 3 countries play it in the world. Hardly any athleticism or skill involved.

3 countries? You might want to do a little more research there.

Love how people that have never played baseball think no skill or athleticism is needed.

first of all, cricket came first baseball later
so it is not based on the concept of baseball
rather baseball is based on the concept of cricket
but typical of the lazy yanks here, you removed most of the athletic part of the sport and then claim it doesn't take athletic prowess
try bowling 10 overs in the sun at full pace and lets see what happens
and before telling me to feck off to my own land, you should probably hand the land back to its original occupants first

I have played baseball as well as cricket
and its very clear which sport needs more atheticism
try catching that ball without those giant gloves, try playing 90 overs in the sun in a test match for 5 consecutive days

It`s so predictable that this thread would end up being full of ignorant retards who know feck all about the game having a go at Baseball.

Also, Jeter is more famous than Bonds imo. Especially when one takes into account the huge New York media.

What about A Rod?

See, if you have no knowledge why not just shut the feck up.

US, Canada, Cuba, Japan. Where else do they play it?

I've never played baseball. I've played softball though and that was shit.

How can a sport that takes 5 days to complete one match and has tea breaks be taken seriously?

And to fit your argument of course you have played baseball.

None of the wank yank sports are good enough to lace cricket's boots.

:lol::lol:

and yeah a sport which has fat overpaid dimwits wearing protective gear all round and all they do is tackle and hurt people while taking orders over a microphone is a serious sport right

and you obviously haven't had proper tea in your life :p

The Yank Sports are pretty rubbish

Baseball,American Football,Ice Hockey are all clearly shit.

And people seem to forget Cricket as well as Football was invented by the British.Clearly the better.

Most popular Sports personalities?
This is just based on number of people that know them...

David Beckham, Sachin Tendulkar, Michael Jordan, Yao Ming, Ronaldo (R9), Michael Schumacher...

How people don't think Sachin comes in the top 3 is shocking..
He's known all throughout India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies..

That's a huge portion of the world's population right there..

Let's not forget Cricket (despite what many of you think) is quite popular in parts of North America due to the huge South Asian population.

Baseball is just a yank's vershion of Rounders. Only kids here play it so don't know what that says. Anyway most popular sportsman in my lifetime would have been Sir Steven Redgrave the man couldn't put a foot wrong. Still has god-like status almost.

Course that's just in England.

I have played both cricket and baseball. Cricket is clearly the winner, involving a lot of skill, unlike hit and hope in baseball

Wait... because these players are Indian and a large population is in India...

It makes them GLOBALLY popular?

THINK ABOUT IT.

Beckham and alot of footballers are probably know all across the globe.

Europe - C'mon, a European who doesn't know who Beckham is?
Asia - Didnt Korea host the WC? If so.. I think Asia will have had a hell of a lot of coverage, so most people round Asia should know
Americas - South Americans love their football, and North America have been hit by Beckham in the past year... safe to say most of these know who Beckham is.

This leaves..
Oceania - Probably never even heard of real football tbh :p
Africa - Think they've gradually been getting more and more into the sport, and I am sure Beckham has been over there a few times for charities etc
The 2 icey places don't count :p

Now for Tendulkar
Europe - I had heard of him, but in the cricket bracket... I put people like hmm, did Shane Warne retire? Cricket in Europe isn't that big...
Asia - It's 50/50 in Asia really isn't it?
Americas - Baseball, Basketball and American Football by far outshine it, I've never heard of an American really talking about cricket :/

Oceania - Yep, big over there, but so is rugby. But are any of the Aussies ever sober enough to remember anyones name?
Africa - Not too sure how big etc it is in Africa..

See, football is a more recognised sport around the world from what I can gather... I don't even know what country/team Tendulkar plays for... ok, I just checked wiki, he plays in India anyway... maybe that's why you guys think he is so popular, you really have to follow cricket to know the guy

Whereas Beckham... half the people who know him don't even follow football... his marketing image is all over the world etc.

I say Beckham globally popular
Tendulkar not so.

Purely on fame...

Football: Beckham
Rugby: Habana
Cricket: Peiterson
Golf: Tiger Woods
Baseball: Bonds
Basketball: Don't know, don't care. probably that one that's a rapist
American Football: Again, not sure about these guys - I'll have to go for Manning at New York
Tennis: Federer

I can see everyone else's point as to why Sachin might not be as popular...
but how can you put Pieterson ahead of Sachin in popularity is just PLAIN MENTAL.
