Most Overrated and Underrated?

I tend to disagree with most United fans perceptions of their players. I think plenty are underrated and, in equal measure, some are overrated. If I had to pick only one:

Overrated: Herrera. He is a run of the mill midfield player for a Europa League standard La Liga team.

Underrated: Lingard. His fantastic movement can tear teams apart. I think he will be a force in the next few years.

I don't think many of our players are as bad as they have shown this season. Many are just stuck in a system that makes them look worse than the sum of their parts.

Many of the other premier league teams aren't blesed with outstanding quality either. The fact that we are much worse speaks volumes.

I'd like to see them under proper management first before getting rid of the deadwood. It didn't work the last time we went on a culling exercise.

I don't honestly think that any of our players are overrated, given that the team plays poorly more often than not and few players consistently do well. I will say that Lingard is underrated, as he gets way too much stick on here. He has decent technique, can run at players and has a great drive and attitude that some players are lacking. I also think Memphis is underrated - sometimes he does a lot of things right and people criticise him because he didn't score or assist.

Overrated - Rooney (not by fans anymore but media and managers. Today he was okay in the first half and then poor in the second, the commentators heaped more praise on him than every other player on the pitch put together, it's like this every game he plays. And he is considered unstoppable by both his club and country, which is just laughable).

Underrated - Blind. Very good midfielder who has transitioned seamlessly into a very good centre back. Gets next to no credit from the media, fans of other clubs never seem to rate him, and even United fans tend to want him 'replaced with someone better'. In a team with a functional attack he would look even better.

This.

Overrated - Martial, he's got the potential to be great but he's still got a long way to go (and to prove it). Still one of our few positives this season though

Underrated - Fellaini (even when he has good games people don't want to acknowledge it) & Carrick (still our best midfielder)

Overrated: Smalling (Very good season but with bad moments + very poor with the ball at his feet)
Underrated: Antonio Valencia by far - People expect Valencia being a RB to deliver 10/10 dangerous crosses every game but how many RBs do that in the league? Sagna,Bellerin,Ivanowich,Coleman,Darmian? Nops. I think Darmian's horror show after his first 3-4 games has shown how underrated Valencia actually is.

Overrated: Memphis, Mata, Januzaj, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Darmian
Underrated: Maybe De Gea if some still thinks he's not the best GK in the world

On the caf:

Overrated - Herrera
Underrated - Rooney

In the wider media:

Overrated - Rooney
Underrated - Blind

Herrera is easily our most overrated player by the fans.

For underrated I will go with Fellaini.

One way to do this... if someone was of a mind to... is compare whoscored's overall ratings against the caf's overall ratings.

Overrated and underrated by who? The fans or the manager? There will always be favourites and scapegoats among the fan base.

Herrera's weaknesses in deeper positions are often overlooked because of his tendency to take more risks and provide end product in the final third. Not a bad player at all but the hype about him was almost unbearable last season. In the beginning of this season i thought that he would pass the baton in the race for the most overrated player to Darmian but that didn't last long. I believe everyone's had his fair share of criticism during the season. The performances from the youngsters are often overhyped by the fans but that's understandable. I'd go with Young and Valencia because during the period they were both out for a long period there was a belief among many fans that things will get much better with their return to action.

Underrated by some fans throughout this season has been Blind's contribution to the defense. Given the fact that he's not a natural center back but he's given a multi tasking role by LvG, he's adopted pretty well. He's our only option to play the ball from the back (when Carrick isn't playing), he's helped Smalling look better (don't forget that Smalling likes to get in front of his man to intercept the ball and therefore he needs good covering from his partner at the back) and he has to deal with attackers who are much more physical than him. I wouldn't complain with a new signing at the back but fair play to Blind, he's done well.

Overrated by LvG? Where should we start? There have been so many bad decisions during pre season which have played either a minor or a major role in our woeful season. The crown jewel of this season's bad planning was the belief that Rooney would be able to lead the attack and score 20 PL goals. Some may not remember this but Martial was a last minute buy, we were actually going into the season with Rooney as the only senior forward. And LvG really ows a big "thank you" to Rashford for saving his arse (don't start with the bull that he had planned it all along because we hadn't even heard of Rashford in the first team activities before the game against the Danes).

An honorable mention is also LvG's persistence with Mata as a play maker in the attacking half. This started last season with the 3-5-2 and the diamond and it was continued this season too Juan as a wide play maker. I guess we'll never learn from that mistake, having an eye for a final ball doesn't make you able to dictate play like Silva does at City.

And as much as i love Schweini, he deserves a mention here. It was a mistake to believe that he's still fit enough to play the "Verratti role".

Three names ladies and gents, Bastian-Mata-Rooney, the highest paid footballers in LvG's team.

Underrated by LvG? Strangely enough, Fellaini. For a manager who's brand of football is based on the players' ability to retain possession under pressure, Fellaini hasn't been utilized much. I know he's not the most technical gifted midfielder in the world but when all the others (except Martial) crumble when being closed down and concede possession rather easily, you'd expect that the big man would be used more often.

Martial loses possession an awful lot.

The most underrated players in our side are Lingard, Blind, Valencia and Fellaini

I hear people claiming we need a new partner to Smalling - but it would be fun to know how many more points we would have had if Smalling/Blind had played with Valencia and Shaw on either side - all season.

Martial loses possession an awful lot.

Of course he does but he also makes things happen with his ability on the ball, something that can't be said about the rest of our creative players (that's why i separate him from the rest). He's far away from becoming the finished article but he is the only one in this side we can look to for the creation of chances week in and week out.

Over rated-Mata he's just a passenger who goes hiding and is a big part why we are dung up top.

Under rated- Darmain he's not the worst player at the club that's Rojo

Underrated DDG, rashford,martial
Overrated: the rest

Overrated : everyone apart from De gea, TFM and rashford

apart from Dave and the 2 youngsters any other player could leave tommorow and I wouldn't be bothered at all and they certainly would be forgot about quickly.

You wouldn't be bothered if Martial, Shaw left tomorrow? Interesting.

 forgot about Shaw, I'd definately like to keep him. As for martial he is definitely overrated by United fans probably because he's a fan favourite, even when he plays bad (which he does) people constantly try find excuses for him.

Overrated - Schwinny. Has offered almost nothing for me. It's like he's come in to play 20 testimonials from the bench a season.

Underrated - Carrick. Blind is underrated but for me, but Carrick is the winner, he has been completely flogged by his own fans. "Give him a testimonial and replace him" is all I've read on here. The guy is our best passer, playmaker and pace-setter we've got by a mile and so many want him gone. He was never quick. He got exposed in his 20's and nobody cared, now he's in his 30's it's because he's done as a top player. How people can't see what he offers us is baffling. He needs protection but that's down to the managers selection.

Overrated: Schneiderlin
Underrated: Lingard

Presume you are being sarcastic or he's tearing United's team apart

Strangely I see a lot of people saying Lingard is underrated, though I'd have him on my mind as being slightly overrated. But that's just me. I would love it if he made it here, but currently I'd have those chances as 30-70 against.

Anyway,

Overrated - Mata

Underrated - Valencia at RB

Underrated, Blind. A versatile, technically adept footballer. De Gea. If he goes to Madrid in the summer he'll be appreciated even more when we realise what we've lost. Overrated, take your pick worth the exception of Martial/Rashford/F-Mensah

One way to do this... if someone was of a mind to... is compare whoscored's overall ratings against the caf's overall ratings.

Caf/Whoscored:

01. Shaw = 1st
02. De Gea > 18th
03. Fosu-Mensah > 13th
04. Martial < 2nd
05. Rashford = 5th
06. Smalling < 3rd
07. Schweinsteiger > 14th
08. Borthwick-Jackson > 19th
09. Romero > 27th
10. Varela = 10th

For what it's worth (which is close to nothing, in my opinion - but there it is).
